    A little complex to assemble.

Great coverage. I have used this for spraying my drive for weeds and lawns for moss. So much faster than using a hand held sprayer.

If you’ve got lots of weeds, save yourself the hassle and spend a little more on this. It can be a little heavy to get on when it’s full, but there’s no need to fill it!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersAs a customer who has used the Oregon 518771 Backpack Pressure Garden Chemical/Weed Killer Sprayer, I am providing a review outlining the good and bad aspects of this product.

    The good:

    1. Large capacity: The sprayer has a generous 20-liter capacity, allowing for extended use without the need for frequent refills. This is particularly useful for larger gardening or weed control tasks.

    2. Adjustable spray nozzles: The sprayer comes with two adjustable spray nozzles, which provide versatility in application. You can easily switch between a wide spray pattern for larger areas and a focused spray pattern for targeted applications.

    3. Comfortable backpack design: The backpack-style design of the sprayer distributes the weight evenly, reducing strain and fatigue during use. The adjustable shoulder straps and padded back panel enhance comfort and allow for extended periods of use.

    4. Durable construction: The Oregon sprayer is made from high-quality materials that ensure durability and longevity. It can withstand the rigors of outdoor use and is resistant to chemicals and UV rays.

    5. Convenient lance attachment: The sprayer includes a lance attachment that extends your reach, making it easier to access hard-to-reach areas or apply the spray at a distance.

    The bad:

    1. Limited pressure adjustment: Some users have found that the pressure adjustment mechanism on this sprayer is not as precise as they would like. It may require some trial and error to achieve the desired spray pressure.

    2. Potential leakage: A few users have reported instances of minor leakage from the sprayer’s seals or fittings. While this issue seems to be relatively uncommon, it is worth noting as it could affect the user’s experience.

    3. Heavy when fully loaded: With a 20-liter capacity, the sprayer can become quite heavy when filled to its maximum capacity. This might make it challenging to carry for extended periods, particularly for individuals with limited strength or mobility.

Overall, the Oregon 518771 Backpack Pressure Garden Chemical/Weed Killer Sprayer is a reliable and versatile tool for gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a large capacity, adjustable spray nozzles, and a comfortable backpack design. While there are minor concerns about pressure adjustment and potential leakage, these issues do not overshadow the sprayer’s overall performance and durability. It is a worthwhile investment for those in need of a dependable sprayer for their gardening or weed control needs.

I purchased this item because my 8ltr pressure pump gave up and was unable to be pressurised anymore. The item came next day without any damage and well packaged. It comes needed to be put together and to be honest the instructions are pretty useless other than to check you have all the relevant parts. However it’s fairly easy to assemble as there are not too many parts. My 1st use of this is one of joy!!! In comparison to my 8ltr pressure pump I’m not continuously bending over to pump the said unit, which really gives me back ache and although the 20lts in the Oregon sprayer is over double the weight you are in an upright position so enabled to carry it easier. The Oregon unit comes with two nozzles a jet spray and a fan spray, so far I’ve only used the fan spray. I have found the sprayer with the fan spray to be absolutely amazing and have completed my task within a couple of hours, where the pump sprayer took me between two or three days to do the same area. Believe me though, you will use some muscles that you’ve forgotten about, but nowhere near the discomfort of continuous bending down and pumping to build pressure in the smaller uni

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe sprayer itself is quite a good piece of equipment but what lets it down are the appalling straps. Bearing in mind this sprayer is designed to hold 16 litres it becomes very heavy. the shoulder straps, padding and connecting clips are just not up to the job of taking that weight. one of my shoulder pads split off on the first use as did a connecting clip. I have had to fashion a new pad myself and tie the strap onto the sprayer as the clip broke. For an extra or 2, a better quality strapping system could have been attached.

Took me less than 15 mins to assemble (the 16L unit). Came with two nozzles .. pinpoint and wide arc. I find 14 litres is a reasonable weight to have on my back. Pressure is really good. So much more efficient than my previous smaller killaspray unit and it has saved me a lot of time.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI have had a backpack sprayer previously that didn’t last long, so, after reading lots of reviews went for this one as a replacement. After a bit of a fiddly job to assemble (the split pins they send are stupidly strong and really hard to open), I filled up and sprayed. Lovely coverage, fab to use. I think 20l is maybe a little heavy for regular use but if you are spraying once or twice a year this is an absolutely fabulous product and you can always fill it to the halfway level if you find it’s too much weight.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a high quality product. It doesn’t leak and is well made.

Don’t be put off by the reviews saying it is hard to assemble. I have no idea how incapable these people must be. Its simple. There is an exploded 3D diagram, the parts are pretty obvious in terms of their functionality, it all snaps together nicely and just works. Took me a few minutes and was very intuative. It has spare seals and o-rings.

    I’ve very happy with it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve bought this sprayer for my gardening business and it’s up there with the more expensive ones. It works a treat ,lovely fine spray for weed spraying. Yes it’s heavy when filled up but not that bad, you can always put less in. Went together very easily took about 10-15 minutes, all in all very happy and would certainly recommend

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI have a fairly large driveway which needed chemicals to kill growing weeds, so I needed this sprayer for it’s capacity.
The cost was attractive and it looked rugged enough.
On arrival the sprayer needed assembled. Not particularly challenging fr the amateur gardener. If you get stuck there are a number of videos showing use and assembly on ‘the’ popular site that shares videos.
The two adapters allows you to vary the rate and flow of the discharged liquid.
The arm operates in a ‘pumping’ action, which is easily operated without much effort, as you move around the area to be sprayed.
*One suggestion* – I suggest that you assemble this sprayer and ‘test run’ it with ordinary water.
This is due to the fact that in assembly you are tightening ‘nuts’, which if not tight enough can leak a little when pressurised by the pumping.
If there is a leak ( and I got two areas) – it is simple to tighten the sockets to make them leak proof.
The sprayer covers a large area if filled to the top.
Light enough when full to have on your back. The tubing is long enough to allow it to sit on the ground beside you, if you wish to operate it that way.
More than happy to recommend it for price, quality of service and durability of its life.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersRelatively easy to assemble – illustrations are grossly underexposed and virtually useless. Sturdy, simple to operate with excellent performance. My only recommendation to OREGON would be to apply a few centimetres of sticky tape to secure the lid. Mine arrived wide open, fortunately nothing had dropped out, but others may not be so fortunate. May save you and other purchasers’ a degree of hassle.

This product seems fairly well made and sturdy. Pretty easy to assemble (10-15 mins). It’s fairly comfortable on my back with 10 litres of fluid in the tank, and made small work of spraying my large patio/driveway.
    Would recommend for the money.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have quite a large lawn which develops moss every year. Using a standard 5litre sprayer took hours of pumping and refilling.
This product dramatically cut down the number of visits back to the tap and the lever pump meant that I just continually sprayed.

Also the spread of the spray was an enormous benefit.

No real problems with assembly as some reviews have suggested.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersEasy to assemble if you watch the excellent video available on Youtube, as the man says make sure you tighten every joint. Once assembled and filled it is heavy and can be a bit of a struggle to get on you back. It works very effectively and cuts down the effort needed for more traditional sprayers. Really pleased i bought this.

This 16l sprayer is great value for money. I’m 6″ tall and reasonably strong. I found the 16 litre tank (16-17kg overall when full) about as much as I was comfortable carrying. I did a quick test with the fan nozzle. The sprayer delivers approximately 2 litres per minute at a width of around 120cm (4 ft). The spray looks nice and consistent – ideal for adding even coverage of fertiliser or pesticide etc. As others have said, you do need to pump the handle frequently while using and the shoulder straps are a bit basic (but functional). Overall I’m very happy with it.

Its a bit fiddly to assemble but there are a few youtube videos out there that can help. Once assembled it works well. I got the 16L version but generally fill it to 10L. This sufficient to do my driveway and other areas. It seems good value for money. The only complaint is that the shoulder straps could be of better quality

First and foremost, the instructions are probably the worst I have ever seen. I have “better than 20/20 vision” according to my optometrist but struggled to read the instructions provided. There is an extremely kind gentleman on YouTube who shows how to make it, very easily, in about 10 minutes and would suggest anyone to check him out. Another important “issue” is that there are EXTRA pieces after you have made it so please don’t panic, but again, the gentleman on YouTube indicates this. Finally, I like the quality of this product and with the nozzle-ends, will suit most people. Highly recommend and on a personal note, thank you to the guy on YouTube for your kind support with putting this together.

Very effective. Took advice of Richard Allen in another review, followed his link and ordered new nuts for the underside. Assembly instructions could be better – photos not clear. Poorly designed fixings for the shoulder straps -very flimsy and unnecessarily contrived. Otherwise, for the money, this is a very effective piece of kit. Great pressure but weed killer still went a long way. I got the 16 litre which is plenty big/ heavy enough and covers a large area.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI ordered a large Hozelock sprayer but, despite being promised delivery in a few days, it still hadn’t arrived after two weeks. I cancelled the order and bought this instead – and I think I’ve landed on my feet. This was half the price of the Hozelock. And it arrived within 24 hours.

Oregon seem to have a good reputation for things like chainsaw bars, so I hoped that they wouldn’t allow their name to be stuck on the side of some flimsy rubbish. Now that I have the thing, I don’t believe that they have.

I have all the spatial ability of a moth, planning its escape route through your lightbulb. I still found the assembly instructions simple and easy to follow. No tools are needed, although there are two split pins to splay which is easier with something hard than with a finger… but a teaspoon would do the job. It looks to me as though one could fit the handle on either side, to suit both left and right-handed people.

When I read the other reviews, I thought that I was getting a 20 litre model and I was a little disappointed when the 16 litre arrived. This was foolish of me, I hadn’t done the maths. Fully charged the 40 litre model will weigh over 45 lbs. 16 litres is heavy enough and, to be honest, I think I’ll mostly fill it no more than half full for the majority of jobs around the garden.

Mine came with two spraying tips. One seems to be a conventional pin-hole, the other creates a wide but short spray pattern. I tested the latter and was very pleased: weedkiller comes out at quite a rate, but in a very controlled wide band. I had a large area sprayed in no-time.

A nice touch is that Oregon provide some spare O rings and a seal. It probably doesn’t cost them much to do this but it gave me the impression that they may be more thoughtful than many other manufacturers.

I am so glad that the Hozelock sprayer failed to arrive in time: I cannot find anything to fault with this device.

I have found Oregon products to be well-made and reliable, and this is no exception. A bit of a fiddle to put together, but this is often the case with online buys, isn’t it? I am sure there is a video out there to help if you get stuck. It has spare washers, 2 squirt-heads and it is a well designed and constructed unit. In this case, I suggest you fork out an extra tenner and get a machine that does what you need. Recommended.

I have bought or inherited smaller (5l) pumps for spraying my patio, driveway and other paths around my house. However, the endless pumping that’s required and the need to do this on the ground (ie. take off the pump if it was hanging from my shoulder) has about killed me in terms of back pain, arm ache, etc, let alone the time it takes to keep filling the stupid thing up. I hunted around for a better solution and this oregon knapsack pump is brilliant. The instructions are rubbish but the gentleman who created a youtube video on how to put it together was a god send. Thus assembly took a few mins. Filled it with water and poured in my weedkiller (Gallup 365) and away I went. No more bending over and no more taking it off every 2 mins to pump the tank. I can now cover the ground much quicker and more efficiently and the whole thing is so much more comfortable. I bought the 20l version because its cheaper. However, it really doesn’t make any difference if you fill it with 5l of liquid or 20l, it works equally well because even if you put 20l in, you’ll end up pumping with 5l in at some point anyway!! So why pay more! I’m 5’11” and 14 stone and I could happily walk around with 20l on my back. The straps have padding over the shoulder area. Just make sure you sit the knapsack on a wall in order to actually put it on your back, otherwise you could do yourself an injury. I’m writing this the day after having used the tank for over 2 hrs solidly and have no aches or pains whatsoever.

Golden Review Award: 74 From Our UsersI’ve had two of these sprayers and they are good value for the money. However, both have leaked soon after starting to use them and I have identified this as a problem with the two retaining nuts in the base of the unit holding the reservoir to the base. Neither of these nuts have a split washer to stop them coming loose and once the do so they either fall off or allow the reservoir to start to leak – not great having chemicals running down your back and legs. However, this can be easily fixed by swapping the two nuts for nyloc nuts which cannot come undone. Once I did this I had no issues with leaks so best do this before using the backpack the first time. I got the nuts from Amazon as part of a selection pack – if you buy these you will have the correct nuts and spares for use elsewhere as they always come in handy. The nuts are available from this Amazon link:

The product itself represents excellent value for money. I needed it to target spray a large area (8 acres split into individual paddocks). The nozzle attachments are effective for narrow and wide spraying. When assembling tighten and then tighten again in order to prevent leaks.

That said, I have never come across a worse set of assembly instructions in my life. They are apocalyptically poor. The type face is approximately size 4 and there is nowhere near enough detail. I relied upon an excellent video on you tube from an individual who critiqued exactly the same point.

If you can assemble the product it is very good. Please use the video.

  24. MeriditBradley says:

The reason for the 4 out of 5 is the assembly instructions are printed so small they are very difficult to read. It was ok though as once you lay out the parts and refer to the diagrams it becomes apparent what goes where. When filled it is quite heavy so if you have underlying back or lower joint issues you might want to consider a smaller unit. THen again you could just not fill it as much. Very simple to use and covers a huge area. No more stopping, pumping to pressure, spraying, pumping to pressure etc etc. Remember to flush with clean water after each use if you can. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 30 From Our UsersFirst and foremost, the instructions to assemble this item are easily the worst set of instructions I have ever seen! They’re beyond ridiculous and a waste of ink and paper. Another user left a video on how to assemble this and if it wasn’t for that I’d still be trying to assemble it now.

Now that is out of the way, as a sprayer this is great and well worth the money considering similar ones are more expensive. It’s easy to pump while in use and holds a fair amount. It is heavy to lift when full of liquid so definitely put it on something high up and then put it on, it’s much easier that way. I used the sprayer to spray ferrous sulphate on my lawn and it covered the lot which is handy. I didn’t need to filter the sediment out either as the sprayer has a removable filter which can be easily cleaned.

I would highly recommend this. I ummed and ahhed about paying for one but I’m glad I did now.

One star deducted for the abysmal instructions!

This is a decent sprayer for the price. The quality of the tank and components are pretty good and everything works as expected. I have had no issues with leakage but have only done 4-5 tankfuls of spray with it thus far.

As other reviewers have noted, it can be very heavy with 20 L of liquid (approx 20 kg) so if you are mainly spraying a small area of ground then the smaller model will probably suit you better. Otherwise purchase the larger one and don’t fill to the top unless you can carry the weight.

The only negative point is the assembly, which is mainly down to the provided instruction manual being very poor (the images are unclear). I would advise searching on YouTube for an assembly video as once you know the instructions the assembly becomes straightforward.

Overall, a decent sprayer for the money which should satisfy the spraying needs of most gardens.

Golden Review Award: 471 From Our UsersWe have two smaller pressurised sprayers with a 5L capacity made by a well-known manufacturer with a reputation for quality. Both of these have developed leaks that are beyond repair and I made a decision to pay more money and get a more professional sprayer. I also wanted a larger capacity as we were constantly refilling the 5L sprayers half way through the job.

This Oregon sprayer is a fair bit more expensive than the competition on Amazon, but I know that Oregon is a semi-professional/professional brand with a good reputation, so I decided to spend the extra money in the hopes of getting a sprayer that will last longer and perform better.

The sprayer comes in 16L or 20L capacity and I decided to go for 20L. Now that I have used it, I wish that I had gone for 16L. I’ll get to that later in the review. I took everything out of the box and that is where the fun started. The sprayer needs a certain amount of assembly and the instructions are virtually useless. Come on Oregon, it should be fairly easy to write a decent set of instructions. Many of the people who purchase this product will struggle with the assembly! Anyway, I assembled it after a bit of trial and error; see the attached video as I filmed the assembly for future buyers. Assembly does not take too long if you know how to do it, I reckon about 15 minutes. There are two different nozzles with the sprayer, a fan and a spray. Oregon also supply a few spares with the sprayer, a spare seal for the pump and several rubber washers and O rings.

I filled the sprayer with 20L of weed killer mixture and lifted it onto my back, only to feel the weed killer running down my back. The pump was loose and had not been tightened. This was not part of the assembly as the pump was already fitted at the factory. I tightened it up and this solved the problem. So, be aware that everything needs checking for tightness before using it for the first time. This was obviously partly my fault, but it was certainly not mentioned in the instructions.

Lifting the sprayer onto my back was not particularly easy and took a bit of jiggling about to get my second arm through the strap. Once it was on though it felt secure and reasonably comfortable. Unfortunately, I have arthritis in both of my shoulders and this made it a little uncomfortable to get on. I had a real job getting the pump lever down as it was fixed behind my shoulder, but I managed to unhook it with the spray gun.

A few pumps of the lever and the sprayer was up and running. At that point, I realised that I had made a good decision. The fan spray was fitted and it was spraying up a storm! What a lot of coverage for very little effort. Two or three pumps every 20 or so seconds and it was so easy. The lever is in just the right position and as soon as you feel the pressure dropping off, you automatically pump without thinking about it. So in use this sprayer is a joy! The fan gives a wide spray and saturates anything in its path. I then changed the fan nozzle for the spray nozzle and I prefer the spray as you have a little more control over where the weed killer goes. I think Oregon should incorporate a means of keeping the second nozzle on the sprayer somewhere, so that you can swap if you feel the need whilst working. I reckon most users will end up losing or misplacing the other nozzle.

After a while the sprayer begins to feel a little heavy. You need to be pretty strong and fit to use this for any length of time. 20kg plus the weight of the sprayer is a fair amount to be lugging about. I know guys in the army do it for a living, but most people will struggle after half an hour or so. I wish that I had gone for the smaller 16L model, 4kg less would make a fair bit of a difference, so think about what you are prepared to carry before selecting the one you want. My advice is to select the smallest if you are undecided. I can manage with the 20L, but would prefer the 16L.

I love the sprayer. It is a joy to watch the weeds and especially the brambles getting covered in weed killer! The sprayer is very effective and covers large areas very quickly. It does not seem to use huge amounts of liquid too and the tank lasts a long time in use. No more mixing weed killer every 20 minutes! The sprayer feels good and I have confidence that it will last. Time will tell. So far I am glad that I spent the extra money. If it fails prematurely, I will come back and update this review. For now, it gets 5 stars.

I hope you have found my review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective sprayer, a joy to use! Think about the weight when deciding which model to buy if in doubt go smaller.
