What does FFP3 stand for?

FFP3 is the highest FFP (Filtering Face Piece) filtering class in the EU and, according to the classification, offers at least 99% protection against toxic substances as well as droplet aerosols, carcinogenic or radioactive substances, enzymes, microorganisms; against harmful substances whose concentration is up to 30 times the maximum workplace concentration.

What do the acronyms V, NR, R & D mean?

The suffix V means that there is an additional exhalation valve. This makes the mask more suitable for longer periods of wear. However, the exhaled air is not filtered!

NR is the abbreviation for Not Reusable. Such masks are intended for single use.

Respirators with the suffix R, for Resusable, may be used several times. The requirements for this (disinfection, care, etc.) can be found in the manufacturer’s manual.

The suffix D stands for dolomite dust test. If present, the mask has passed the so-called dolomite dust test. This involves exposing the mask to a specified concentration of dolomite dust in the air and then measuring the breathing resistance and filter passage of the half mask.

I have bought several boxes of these masks over the last few year as they are comfortable and effective for building work and for personal protection. As many have reported the elastic is the weakness. The glue typically breaks within a couple of hours of use. This never happened with the first boxes I used but is so common now that I always apply a drop of superglue to the glue joint before use. That fixes the problem but it shouldn’t happen in the first place – please note Oxyline!

Evidence on the effectiveness of masks for viruses is mixed. A Cochrane review showed that surgical and FFP2/N95 masks made little difference. Yet a study at Addenbrookes Hospital showed that FFP3 is effective at reducing virus transmission between 52 -100% Hence FFP3 can probably be taken as the minimum filtration standard to provide some personal protection against viruses.

I can’t wear masks that have loops behind the ears. They all cut into me and are agony to wear. These are great. I can breathe easily and I can wear these masks for hours if I have to.

Better than most other others. A better fit that reduces ‘fogging’ up. I found it quite tight and a better solution for me is to use only one rubber head attachment.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWell after reading all the reviews about elastic braking I was unsure what to do. I decided to give them a try because overall I thought the cost was reasonable and also I could change the elastic if necessary. So far no broken elastic but have only been wearing them on an off for about a week. I did cut the elastic and tie a knot positioning it on the middle of the green square on the side. I did this as I prefer to put the elastic round my ear rather than my whole head. Perhaps this will put less strain on the elastic? The elastic itself is glued in one place to make it a continuous piece. perhaps this is where it was coming apart? In terms of the elastic it can easily be replaced without it affecting the rest of the mask. Beware which elastic you buy because I ordered some which was a dirty grey colour which looks terrible against my nice white mask. I found some hanging on the end of an isle in the local supermarket. The mask itself fits my face very well and is comfortable. I also felt I could breathe quite well which is why I chose one with a valve. It is meant to be washable so not sure how that will go but I will update review if necessary.

Pro’s, good fit, didn’t fog glasses, good protection for self.
Con’s, no Covid protection for others, difficult to wear glasses due to the bulky nose lip, don’t easily fit into pockets.

A little difficult to put on until you get the method correct. Surprisingly comfortable. Needs to be correctly fitted to your face I still find my glasses steaming up but nowhere near as much as other masks

Bought because they weren’t an extortionate price and were PPPF3. They’re good quality, the inner filter on one of the masks was a little un-stuck but easily stuck down again – probably worth checking that all the filters are stuck down before putting one on.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersLove the masks – they fit snugly yet are surprisingly comfortable and easy to breathe in. I also like the fact that the cover on the valve directs exhaled breath downwards – so no glasses fogging!

However: stars docked for the rubbish elastic straps. Nothing wrong with the elastic itself but I’ve used five of these so far and the elastic on EVERY one has snapped after just a couple of hours or less. A quick reef knot fixed the problem but really: do better!

Golden Review Award: 58 From Our UsersI know the valve is not ideal as it won’t protect others should I be infective, but truth be told as a double jabbed 80yr old I’m more concerned that I protect myself from the Anti-Vac nitwits who may deal me a deadly blast of their breath. This type of mask affords the maximum protection according to latest scientific observations. Nice product and far the best I have ever used.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersFound these masks easier to fit and use than other FFP3 masks. The elastic is in a continuous loop so it is easy to put the mask on and take it off. Easy to fit as well. Very pleased that these are available. The only downside (which is why I have given a 4 not a 5) is a slight chemical smell.
