Bought as forward planning for when we go on our cruise with no phone signal … So will update on that score once tested.
However, around our home town, I was able to talk to my wife who was at the local supermarket car park whilst I was at home – a mile and half away in quite a heavy urban environment. I wasn’t expecting half that – so for the money you really can’t grumble. At all.

Batteries need a lot of charging. The software is tricky to navigate but the sound is clear and the units easy to handle.

Used for work purposes and does exactly what they are designed to do.

Came with 650mAh batteries, which are rubbish. I bought some 2800mAh from Amazon and so much better. To be honest for less than 30.00 for the radios I wasn’t surprised that the batteries weren’t the best but they will come in for solar lights or something similar. Overall even with extra cost of batteries still a great deal. Range and sound are again pretty good for non-professional equipment.

I bought 2 packs for the grandkids to play with their friends during the holidays, they tok to them like a duck in water and have hours of fun. The range is really good and the sound quality is top notch, highly recommended, plus they could be used for work as the build quality is very sturdy.

Fun and useful, especially when going with the little one to the playground. Battery life’s not that good though, good thing they’re rechargeable. Sometimes are a bit laggy, so the start of the sentence might not get through.

Batteries that come with it doesn’t last long so I bought better rechargeable batteries work’s a treat and has a good range for transmissio

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersFirst-time walkie talkie buyer. I read (and watched) lots of reviews for lots of products, there are hundreds to choose from, after over-analysing I plumped for the pair of Retevis RT45.

I don’t know what everyone elses expectations are, but my purpose isnt for commercial use, its to use for communication between my family in the town I live in and the next one across.

All the walkie-talkies i looked at claimed a 3km range, with most reviews i saw appearing to have a maxed out range of somewhere between 300mtr-1km.

Well…i’ve taken screenshots of the test distances I did…in nearly all instances reception and transmission quality was beyond what i expected (see the 5km test across two towns).

I tested urban to urban and urban to rural, acheiving good quality throughout….all the time communications were audible, the 4.9km was probably the sketchiest but this was also the flattest topography…and probably not good enough, but for getting a message across…it would work..just.
      Any elevation improves results dramatically.
The 5.3km was on a road with elevation, a street on a hill. But that doesn’t detract from how good it worked. (3.3km was with some elevation, but with a big church directly (30yds in front) and sound quality was one of the best).

The units have a nice look and feel, but dont think those rubberised sides are hinting at any waterproofing, they’re not…some gaps in the case at the aerial base show that. That said i have knocked them off a table 18-24inches tall onto laminate floor and they are were unscathed.

They came with 650mah rechargeable batteries which ran low quickly, so im buying some better ones. Some of the tests were done with single use Energizer batteries which seemed to last well…or at least better than the rechargeable ones that were included.

To roundup…i think if you are going camping or anywhere you might get wet…no…find some ip rated ones…but if you want some for largely indoor or dry environment use…these are going to do the job for me.

Also, the handsets came with 16 channels ready out of the box.

Every environment will be different, your town different to mine. If i was stood up close in front of a house in direct line of sight to other receiver, yes that impaired it…but, if the house was 30-50yds in front… transmission seemed to navigate the obstacle enough to have a conversation.

Dont expect all tests to be without static/background noise, some did, but perseverance made understanding one another possibile.

Good luck with whatever you choose, for the price point these did more than I expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed, better than expected.

This unit took a little while to set up, as I was not sure which channel to use (still not too sure) however it does much better than the ones I have used in the past. It is also very clear.

Very short battery life, all others I’ve had are over 12 hours.
I am a full time carer so always have the radio on.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI like to experiment with amateur radio, but working on the PMR446 band requires particular devices like these.

Radios like these work pretty much line of sight and little more. If they will work for you depends on what you are trying to push the signal through. I have had a decent connection over 300m with some buildings in the way, but 400m and a bit of a hill in the way completely blocked the signal.

Getting them up high really increases the range. These are light so I pop them in a running belt and go up nearby hills. Today I got a weak but legible connection to someone ~6km away with me on a hilltop and them on a rooftop.

Devices like these are sold as site management tools and children’s toys so there’s other traffic to consider. Kids seem to stick to channels 1, 2 and 3. Channel 8 has been adopted as a general calling channel. Nine and up seem to be professionals being professional. School monitors. Motorcycle instructors. Etc. But in the end it is a bit of a free for all so there’s no guarantees.

I generally leave one at home when I’m out running so I can update my spouse and I use the privacy codes then, which means while the transmission is public, nobody can easily send us unwanted messages. It’s not perfect, but so far so good.

Running on standard batteries and USB recharging is very convenient. I’ve never run them run flat but I’ve only had them out for a couple of hours at a time.

The manual isn’t great and the menu system is a little opaque, but I got them set up how I like and after that there’s not much to do there.

Got these for camping in France. Amazing range and good battery life. Once used, you find a variety of uses. Started using them for car journeys when convoying and have avoided numerous wrong turns, on the ferry, around town when splitting up, etc. The kids found them easy to use (bought a holder for their one) and gave total piece of mind. In a fairly flat village, with houses obstructing line of sight, theses did well for about a mile. With clear line of sight could be up to 2 miles. They also seem to be well constructed and would definitely withstand rain etc.

What a great little radio. For the price I don’t think you could do better. The customer service from the company is outstanding. I started with two now have six.

Seem well made and work well. Voice quality is very clear. Only tested over 0.6 mile distance so far but perfect for that.
Batteries supplied with the units are fairly low grade (650mAh AA cells) – about one third the capacity of a decent cell

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHad two of these already but hadn’t realised they could be charged so now have 4. This however is a good thing as 2 can be on charge while the others are in use. They are truly 16 channel but only come with 8 activated (you must activate the extra 8 if your country allows 16 channels), you can find out how to do this on the web. You hold down a key then switch the unit on but I have forgotten which key this is. Verry nice units which can take rechargeable or alkaline batteries but no desk charger, you have to plug the byfercated USB lead into a power supply of (apx) 5 volts. I would always go for the rechargable version of this unit.

Bought these for a RV/ motorhome road trip with family in America so we could keep in touch whilst driving. Very easy to use (Retired parents easily picked up how they worked), great battery life and good value for money. Worked well whilst on the road in a 2 vehicle convoy and also when on camp sites when allocated sites/plots short distances away from each other. For the money they are well worth buying

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersFirst set purchased one of the handsets didnt work so had to send the first set back for a refund, the second set works a treat perfect for the kids and out in the park or even take them on a camping trip around a campsite for the kids to keep in touch, i bought them as my 15yr old had a major operation on her foot so purchased them to save me having to shout upstairs if she wanted any food or drink or help with anything . they worked a treat and would definatly recommend or purchase again if need be.

We are using these radios on a farm to communicate between picking gangs; this model is far superior than other models we tried in the past. We are using the radios for at least 8 h a day and so far we didn’t have any issues with the battery; the sound is clear and the built of the handsets is sturdy. Customer service is also great.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI bought these because my elderly Mum was spending Christmas with us but sleeping in a part of the house separated by thick stone walls and with no phone signal or landline phone. I was a little nervous that they would work through the thick walls as nothing else does, but they were perfect. They’ll be great too for when we are outside working in different fields, as we get poor mobile phone reception but these mean we can communicate and save a lot of walking back and forth and shouting.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNice little walkie talkies. Bought for me and my daughter, They have many channels, a torch, a tone to let someone know your about to talk, a setting that transmits when it hears a voice, really good.
The range on them is great aswell, my daughter was in the house and I was about half a mile away in open ground, still very clear with minimal interference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain and worth every penny

These worked extremely well when my wife needed to summon me from my office. If you let the batteries discharge too much, they make a reminder noise, similar to, and as annoying as, a smoke detector when it requires a replacement battery.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI originally was going to buy Motorola walkie talkies that costed more because these looked like they were made from a really cheap plastic.
However! Upon receiving them I can say that they are not a cheap plastic, it is high quality with rubber on the edges, also these ones came with rechargeable batteries. One thing to note is that the range is definetly not what they say it is but then no pmr446 radios do more than a mile or two in ideal conditions.

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersExcellent radios, in fact exceeded expectations.

As supplied are 8 channel but easily converted to 16 channel spec by key presses (as advised by supplier, not detailed in the manual).

These were about the cheapest on Amazon with a vox function, and we needed that.

Bought for the kids for holiday. They have been brilliant in every way.

      Build Quality:
I suppose if I’m being critical they didn’t feel as expensive as the kind of kit I’m used to, but then again they are about 10% of the price and feel much (much!) better than other cheap PMR sets.. The case is double shot moulded with rubber and hard plastic. The rubber is thin on the sides but meatier on the top and base which is what saves them in a fall.

As a result they are durable, survived totally unscathed being dropped and thrown onto concrete.

      Performance and reliability:
Fantastic battery life, over 15h on standby.

Range through mixed forest and open ground about a mile. About half that in town.

Very reliable, both sets worked without a single hiccup throughout our hols and at home since.

Although bought for the kids these will be used for other things as they are reliable and easy to use.

      Things to Add:
The only thing I added was a lanyard which was easily attached to the loop at the base. I had a couple lying about but you can buy them for peanuts.

      Overall:
Really great little sets. Very pleased indeed.

Note: This is a Genuine review. No freebies, no vine program. Not a fake ‘professional’ review. Bought at full price with my own money after a lot of reading.

hese are really good. We used them for skiing and they work really well within a mile, maybe a little more. of course if there are buildings or a mountain in the way, it’s not so good, but still we had a lot f fun. The battery life is more than acceptable, and the batteries could be changed anyway. The waterproof, shockproof, big-button design works very well in practice. This is a lot more fun and efficient that using mobile phones. The kids could go on expeditions and still be linked up.
      Highly recommended.
