Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWe bought this kettle two and half years ago and it was still going strong until I wrecked the filter and left it too long before descaling it (we live in a hard water area) so we were pleased it was still available and purchased a replacement. The old one in now retired after boiling more than 20 times a day seven days a week (we work from home). I think you could call that reliable.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI wanted a kettle that was affordable, would last and the lid opens easily.

Three years after purchasing I’m writing my review.

The kettle is still going, although it’s looking a little tatty around the base and the part where the lid opens. I assume it’s limescale stains, which are in areas where it’s tricky to remove.

The lid is really simple to open still. It’s one easy push of a button.

If I had to find faults, it would be the minimum level is far too much for one cup, which wastes energy. and the stains at the top and bottom are making the kettle look old. It’s obviously different materials at the top and bottom, as the stain follows a straight line all around the kettle.

Despite that I’d definitely recommend just for the ease of opening the lid.

Nice big, quiet electric kettle.. Energy Efficiency Class A is also a plus.
Spout pours well, big opening and kettle width allows for easy cleaning..
Boils quickly to. If it lasts as long as our old kettle I’ll be happy.

This is the third kettle of this make and model. I love this kettle it looks good works great and is rapid boil. My previous two are still going I’ve taken one into work and given the other one away. Great value for money and last a lot longer than the expensive brand I had before. Highly recommended

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI really like this kettle. it has a top that opens wide so its easy to fill, it has a u type water indicator by the handle, so if your left or right handed you can see clearly how much water your putting in. The noise is ok, its very stable, only time you get a slight wobble is fully boiled, but it cuts of straight away so no problem, it pours really well, no water running down the kettle, when on it lights up blue.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSo after reading the reviews, I was unsure but honestly, it’s a chunky feeling kettle, it doesn’t smell at all. I boiled once and refilled and it worked straight away. Good pour on it too. It’s not fancy but it’s sturdy and it’s not loud… just like a regular kettle. It’s pretty fast at boiling a full jug too. Im happy with it so far!

Amazing, well done to the designer of this product!
I’m So Glad that I bought this product, I didn’t believe for a second that the plastic inside the kettle would resist on the second boiling attempt. Genius idea ,less stressful and easier to clean,10/10 from Me!…for now 🙂

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI’ve had about 3 of these kettles over the last 7 years and generally likes them a lot (hence why I keep buying them).

    Good points.
    They’re fairly well constructed
A reasonable price (25ish for the black version)
    Boil reliably
Do their job without being too noisy.
Don’t get too hot especially around the handle.
Easy to see the liquid level due to the light and the “windows” which are to the sides not behind the handle, which is important if you’re visually impaired (I’ve had a couple of models that were better in this regard but worse in how hot they got etc).

Now for the bad part, and why I’m looking at number 4.
They seem to have a habit of developing an issue with either the switch or the latch mechanism for the lid after about 1-2 years (which seems to be a common fault across multiple brands).
However I am at home most of the day and the kettle does get a lot of use as we are all addicted to tea (about 10-12 pots a day as a minimum), so probably at the upper end of “residential” use.

I’ve seen references to the filter on these kettles and that is the biggest let down in my opinion, but one that seems to be the norm for all the electric kettles with a filter that I’ve tried.
My tip for cleaning it is to buy some white vinegar (a one litre bottle will last multiple cleanings), and put the filter in a small glass/tub with a diluted mix of the white vinegar (ideally just enough to fully cover the filter) and leave it to break down the limescale, shake or move the filter occasionally to avoid the sediment building up and blocking/slowing the process. I tend to use about 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water, or might take it to 1 to 5 if it’s really bad or I want it finished sooner.
Usually it seems to do the job over night, then rinse thoroughly and refit.
Do not “scrub” the filter as it’s too delicate.

We liked our old kettle so much decided to buy the exact same one to replace it when the filter holder broke The kettle is easily seen to be working from a distance by the blue light on either side of the kettle. It’s a fast boil, good pourer and has a good amount of space under the lid to allow the tap when filling up

Although never received, I’ve given 4 stars as I’ve nearly always bought Russell Hobbs kettles and been happy with them. Slightly noisy when coming to the boil, but otherwise great products.

We are very pleased with this kettle, bought in a flash sale with effectively 30 off, it is more powerful than our last kettle, is quiet and boils fast. We have experienced none of the bad tasting water mentioned in other reviews. No idea yet how it will cope with our hard water long term but so far so good.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this kettle in April 2022 for an earlier cost of 25.50, but while I expect the pouring filter to be plastic of course, the actual filtering mesh is a very soft thin plastic that clogged very quickly indeed (London hard water area) which is not the seller’s problem of course. However, when I gently cleaned the mesh filter the actual soft mesh parts just immediately disintegrated in my fingers. The filter is not at all robust and the replacement filter cost me 9.95 which is far too expensive considering the kettle cost me 25.50 in April this year. The very small and very simple plastic filter therefore cost me 40% of the price of the whole electric kettle but I had no choice as electric kettles have to have a filter to prevent the limescale and bits from pouring into your tea or coffee, etc.
Apart from this, the deep red colour is pleasant and matches my other kitchen-worktop appliances.

I love this kettle. Simple lines. Plastic inner – so easy to clean. So why did I put ‘but ..’ in the review title. Well! my only big bear is that the lid does not fully open so you have to try and get water into the kettle on any angle. This is fine if using a tap but I filter my water. It is quite awkward getting water into the kettle from the filter. Having said all that I still love the kettle!!

The Russell Hobbs Black Mode kettle is a 1.7ltr kettle electric and sits on a circular corded base which is black with a brushed metal band around the base.

The kettle itself is plastic, with the body of the kettle being black. There is a small brushed metal accent on the lid of the kettle.

There are capacity windows on each side of the handle which are transparent as well as there being a transparent spout. When the kettle is being boiled you can see that the inside of the kettle lights up blue, which can be seen through the capacity windows.

The kettle is fairly quiet when boiling and takes 3 minutes and 40 seconds to boil when it is filled to its 1.7ltr capacity.

Overall, the fully plastic design is not the most stylish close up but from a distance it looks fine. Ultimately it does what you want it to do and priced at around 25, I cannot and will not be critical.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is our third one of these. I suppose that does mean they only last about 2yrs but then we probably use it 5 times a day, at least. Having tried glass, stainless steel and other plastic kettles, this design seems perfect to me. The kettle lights up with a pleasing blue LED light so you know it is on. It is quick and not too noisy. It is a plastic finish and this means the outside of the kettle does not seem to get too hot. The level viewing window is clear enough and it is easy to see the water level. The kettle is easy to fill, either by flipping the lid or via the spout. It pours well. The only downside is that the fine plastic mesh filter on the spout does break after a while but you can get replacements and I think the same problem applies to all kettles unless of course they do not have a filter at all.

Stainless steel kettles get too hot I think. Glass kettles look good but they also get hot and are heavy and if you live in a hard water area then the water just looks horrible anyway. Stainless and glass kettles are also more expensive so you pay more for a less good outcome in my opinion.

Some kettles I have bought had a strange taste to the water. This kettle does not.

Also, this one really looks quite smart although beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder.

Honestly never review products but I felt I had to leave this one. For the most part this is just a kettle, nothing special but exactly what you need if you want to make a brew.

Fair price, boils fast and is fairly quiet. There is a bit of a taste for a while (even after repeated boiling and rinsing before first use) however that went away after the first day or 2 so it’s a non issue.

However there was one big surprise in store for me when I bought this… without thinking I set it up, cleaned it and went to make my first cuppa. Only to discover that I could actually see the measurements

You see this kettle is not like most, this kettle does not discriminate against those of us who have the audacity to use our left hands.

I rarely even use the measurements but the fact that for once in my life I have the ability to do so without having to adapt my usage made my fianc and myself extremely happy (probably too happy but if you know the struggle you understand)

    Well done Russell Hobbs!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a kettle (but better)

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI’m a real fusspot when it comes to kettles so I did a lot of research before buying this one. This kettle provides all the things important to me, they are –
    1. It’s lightweight with a good handle with an easy grip (I suffer at times from arthritis in my hands)
    3. Good pourer – no drips, no water coming out of the lid when you over tilt it, it’s safe
    4. Easy to read water level – the water level indicator is not hidden behind the handle, it runs down both sides of the handle and is suitable for right or left handed people
    5. It lights up when heating with a discreet blue colour
    6. It’s quiet
    7. It’s quick to boil – and is not too hot to touch when it has boiled – again, it’s safe
    8. It’s a good solid base – again, it feels safe.
    9. It has a button press flip open lid which opens completely ie not half way hinged in the middle. It opens all the way up and is easy to fill from the tap – again, it’s safe.
    10. Finally – price. I think it’s a real bargain price. I paid 24.99 for mine and it’s worth every penny and more.

I’ve read lots of comments about an odd taste when using for the first time. I filled it and boiled it 4 times before I used it and I have experienced no odd taste at all – even if there was one, I would imagine it would disappear quite quickly after using it a few time. Any kettle I’ve bought, I always boil it a few times before using anyway.

And ….. my husband like it very much, thinks it’s a great design and terrific value for money.

I hope you find this review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful design, fantastic value, buy it!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA kettle has a specific role. It doesn’t have to take the dog out or answer my phone, but as a well loved member of my family it’s frequently called on to behave well. This one excels at the basic tasks:
    Does it boil quickly? yes
Does it’s lid stay attached and open fully for easy tap filling? yes
Does it pour well into my favourite cup with no drips? yes
Does it have an easy to turn on and off switch? yes
There you go, it does the job well and for this price I’d say look further.
However, for those of you have other questions I am here for you….
Its plastic! Yes it is, which means that it is light to carry when full of water.
Its not ribbed glass with a sexy light! Well it does have a sexy light when it’s on, but my previous glass kettle was an absolute scale magnet, and what’s more you could SEE the scale.
It’s not made of steel? No, and really who cares?
How noisy is it? Honestly the first world questions about a kettle! It makes a boiling noise for a short while. What it doesn’t have is an annoying “beep” like my old Braun, which indicated to a sleeping household when you were putting the kettle on. I don’t consider it noisy. It certainly doesn’t play the Chinese National Anthem like my washing machine.
You have more kettle questions? Bring them on……..

I bought this as a replacement for my parents’ kettle so I don’t use it myself. I was there when it arrived and cleaned and ran it for the first go myself, though.

It seems well-made and sturdy and will hopefully last longer than the last one they had did. It has a good handle which my mother, with fairly severe arthritis, finds it fairly comfortable and easy to manage, although I think if it was filled she might struggle with the weight.

It is not as fast as I’d have expected a 3000 watt kettle to be but it also is no where near the slowest I’ve used, either. The design, though quite elegant, is not quite as it seems on the photo. The picture used gives the impression that this is metallic and bright red but it is not a metallic finish and the colour is more of a maroon than a bright red which is quite disappointing. Being single-walled plastic it also gets pretty darned hot on the outside.

As far as I can see it is a perfectly adequate, though far from outstanding, kettle and reasonably good value for money.

In my younger days when dinosaurs ruled the earth, I had an office admirer who, several times a week, ten minutes ahead of lunch break would pitch up by my desk, to plead buying me lunch. Alas for him, I was not interested as I was already betrothed to another. But he was cute and nice and kind and I never wanted to be harsh. But polite turn downs got increasingly harder. Although, being a busy and time-poor career girl, lunchtimes were valuable for all manner of personal and domestic jobs or errands and so my excuses were usually genuine. I remember one time my kettle had stopped working and conveniently there was an electrical repairs shop around the corner from the office. (I did tell you this was a long time ago – people would actually take their broken toaster/iron/anglepoise lamp/vacuum cleaner to such repairing artisans; we’d never dream of throwing such an investment item before a repairer’s estimate.) Anyway, that time I had the perfect excuse, backed by Exhibit A – my broken kettle in a supermarket carrier bag. However, Office Romeo was distraught: “I can’t believe you’re turning me down again, THIS TIME FOR A BROKEN KETTLE!!
My reply? “But it’s a Russell Hobbs!”
The review bit: No regrets, boils quickly and the electric blue highlights which light up while it’s boiling cheer me every time. Good pourer and looks smart. The only thing I would say it that it is quite heavy when filled, so possibly not too good for the elderly neighbour who asked me about it.
