Bought this to try and make sure I didn’t have a dodgy drive that was misbehaving in a laptop, proved useful for cloning windows to restore quickly as well. Ran at full speed with no hiccups.

Very impressed with the quality of construction. Good solid feel. Love the single push button to unlock. Love the hinged cover. Really well made and built to last. Easy to fit and remove NVMe drives. Great performance too. Highly recommended.

Bought two of these, and they both work like a charm. It feels like it is high quality, while remaining light. Perfect for traveling, just make sure you have a suitable place to store them, they are not waterproof.

Set up with a Mac studio running 2x2tb drives. One as storage and the other as a time machine backup. Super fast, and cheaper than upgrading the internal, with the added bonus of migrating to a new machine easily if needed.

Was pretty easy to assemble because of how it’s made and the instructions were very clear.
Seems to be working well with the Crucial SSD I bought to go with it. Using it with a MacBook Pro to edit 6k Red Komodo footage and I haven’t had any issues at all.

The Sabrent enclosure feels like a quality product and works very well, it has a nice reassuring weight to it too. I’m very impressed.

Inserting my Western Digital Black SN770 SSD was a little challenging but eventually went in. My main concern was heat, this is a warmer drive but even under load the aluminium casing with the built in thermal pad dissipates the heat and keeps the drive cool.

I’m using the SSD to run Windows 11 Pro and Game Pass plugged into a dock, alternatively it can be directly plugged into the Steam Deck and that works great too. Recommend.

Well… was cheap and it works so no complain
Also looks nice and solid. The only thing is… I am not sure is that thermal paste even touching a nvme disc inside… I think I should put myself there more thermal tape.. But anyway it is not a big deal for me… Just if You have any thermals issue because You use hardly this case.. Consider to put more thermal tape inside. Working with macbook and windows.

Great little enclosure for SSDs – As an IT professional I use this almost everyday. I cant fault it! Its small. It looks decent (in as much as anything like this can look decent) It’s fast, and so far reliable. I put a 1TB Integral drive in it and it works great. I would definitely recommend!

Extremely well made and easy to use.

If you are planning on using this as a portable unit for travelling with – consider the weight (it is heavy) and the fact that it requires the dc 5v charger to be plugged in to work.

Other than that – for desktop use it is amazing – looks fantastic and will no doubt serve me well for a long time

    Highly recommend

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to install a Samsung NVME memory card to expand my Mac. It works great. There were no instructions about how to use the enclosed heat conducting pad so I watched various videos on YouTube about installing it. They all suggested sticking the pad to the memory card. This does work BUT if you try to remove the pad, it pulls the sticker off the memory card which means that if it the memory fails you would not be able to return it as you will have removed its serial number etc. So, APPLY the HEAT PAD to the LID!

This really works, and is genuinely tool-free. Press button on end to open (making sure USB-C cable is disconnected first or you’ll break it), pop in the NVMe PCB, twist a little cam to lock it into place, press to close and lock. Job done.

Note: if you’re going to use shorter NVMe cards, these will fit, and they do supply a little rubber plug to hold it into place. But I can guarantee you *will* lose this tiny item before you need it!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThis caddy sports the RTL9210B chipset which had a dual USB-PCIe & USB-SATA interface (very handy).

I’ve only tested briefly with a WD SN550 drive (NVMe) and it works to a satisfactory performance level, doesn’t produce any significant heat, the SSD can be installed completely without tools.
Most importantly this caddy is stable while in operation. The integrity of data is more important than speed. I had another NVMe caddy from Orico which crashed spectacularly while in operation.

As for speeds the SSD I tried normally runs at speeds close to 3.4GB/s read, 1.9GB/s write while mounted directly into the computer. So the caddy takes away some of that performance in my case (might work faster with other systems, I don’t know).

Works well with Linux, which is also specified on the box/manual. Overall very happy with the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well with Linux

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a very good enclosure for NVMe drives. Installing the drive was extremely easy. It supports speeds up to 10 Gbit/s. I used it to transfer data from my old SSD to a new one, and the process was finished in a couple of minutes.

I did some testing and with Intel 660p inside it I’m getting ~1 GB/s read speed and ~400 MB/s write speed. The write speed is limited by the SSD itself and not by the enclosure, I can see it going up and down as the SSD fills and clears its SLC cache.

Great this replaced a (cheap) simmilar itemfrom another brand that blewup my SSD!
This one does not and seems much better made, with a far better heat transfer (gets warm but ot red hot)
    Compatability with windows is fine
Speed (dependand upon the car you choose to insert) but pass through does seem quick.
Well made, east to fit securly your card (takes two sizes)
    Would reccomend

More expensive than I had hoped but does the job superbly so worth every penny. Not sure it needs the full metal jacket but that, no doubt, is a cost effective heat sink and also protects the electronics. Thoroughly recommended!

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersIt does what it advertises however there is one major issue in the documentation. Nowhere in the installation instructions does it mention to remove the thermal pad protector. In fact there is no mention of the thermal pad at all. Less experienced users could easily be caught out and find that the pad that is meant to transfer heat away from the drive may actually end up insulating it and causing thermal throttling or perhaps even drive damage.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI so much liked the first Sabrent USB 3.2 Type-C Tool-Free Enclosure, which was ideal for my Dell Latitude 5480, that I bought another for my Lenovo Ideapad 120S, after acquiring a spare M.2 NVMe SSD.
Good price, easy to install and use. You don’t require any tiny screws to retain the SSD. The enclosure appears to be anodized aluminium. The lid, which contains a full size heat dissipation pad, is ribbed to further aid heat disposal. Up to now, with relatively light use, neither enclosure has got past warm to the touch. Dimensions are 117mm long, 31mm wide and 11mm deep. The Type-C (reversible) USB cable is 217mm long overall.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI wanted to give 5 star review but the problem for me is how you insert the M.2 storage on this thing. It’s not easy and I honestly don’t understand why they have to make it this hard. Why is there no way to create a way which will be like when you put batteries on your remote control? I almost broke my M.2 removing it from this enclosure. I recommend it but I also recommend the user to be careful how to install their M.2s because you can very easy break the pins.

Don’t use the supplied cable if you’re after fast data transfer. It’s 40MB/s (old USB speeds). Decent cable gives me 180MB/s!

Ordered AM on bank holiday – was delivered by 7.30pm. Cloned a 512GB Sabrent Rocket NVME drive onto a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro. Took just over 5 minutes and worked instantly. It made the job of the cloning of these two drives so simple.

It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it. And I’ve now got this as an enclosure for any other NVME drives I encounter. Yes, the fan is noisy during operation, but I’d rather have this than reduce the life of my drives. It even works as an enclosure using a single USB-C connection without the need for a power supply.

    Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersWith a Samsung 960 EVO 250GB NVME this ran as fast as is possible using the USB 3.1 C
However it could not cope with a Samsung 970 plus 2TB which ran a full 10% under the allowable bandwidth.

I suspect it was delivering insufficient power to run the drive at full speed, but it might just be another issue to do with that Make and model of NVME. Another popular NVME enclosure did give me full bandwidth / speeds with the same NVME using the same cable and socket.

In short if you are putting a large NVME or a higher rated one you might want to run Crystal Diskmark to assess the speed you are getting. It’s a free app. and it is the one Pros often use in reviews.

Really nice product – compact and secure. I dropped one star because it seems that one of the screw holes to secure the head of the unit was not milled correctly – therefore I am only able to secure the unit with one screw (which is enough) I am not thinking of taking the drive to the top of Mount Everes

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersBrowsing amazon for an m.2 enclosure was a mess of unknown brands that all look similar and are all similarly priced, i chose this sabrent because it was the only brand i recognised, and I’m very happy i did. The enclosure is built very solid, out of aluminium and is extremely easy to use, the hinges on the swing open are nice and stiff, the included cable is of good quality. The only slight complaint i have is that when using a shorter format ssd the standoof ends up interfering with the thermal pad ( as is seen on the picture) possibility not allowing for optimal contact between the ssd and the thermal pad. However this should not be an issue with full sized drives or can easily be fixed with some thermal compound / extra pad (for those wondering ssd’s don’t actually need any sort of cooling by defaut and their optimal working temperature is actually around 60-70C).
In summary this is a great option with sleek design and very solid build quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good choice, great build quality.

This is great, well made, easy to use, fast, no tools needed for drive swaps, and for those people who buy laptops with the intention of a storage upgrade at some point, the clone option means all the apps/docs/pics etc (including any windows settings and tweeks you may have made), will be on the new drive with more space.
Its also great as an external storage unit, and the power supply is only as big as a phone charger, so easy to store/transport, but it is quite heavy, which personally i like as it feels very sturdy and pretty hard to damage.
    Love it.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersNeeded something that would work with a M1 Mac. Tried a few other enclosures (such as an SSK) and they instantly crashed my Mac Mini. This one suffers the same. I believe the issue is with the M1, not the enclosures, as they all work fine with Intel based Macs. With an M1 Mac you can connect with USB-A and it works for Time Machine, albeit slowly but the high speed USB-C doesn’t. I have emailed Sabrent tech support to ask if they are aware of the issue. Will update this if anything changes.

Special points for the tools free design. Didn’t even need to look for instructions. Just slide your ssd in, move the rubber grommet. Position the drive in place and wiggle the holding rubber nubbin back in place. Close it up and you are away.

I have two of these units – I think they are a great way to go to build a cheap USB SATA based M.2 drive. Definitely a lot cheaper than NVME and I suspect ultimately more reliable due to the simpler tech and no real need for thermal pads.

I did have a problem with my second drive however – it operated at USB 2.0 speeds in most USB 3.0 ports – in the end I discovered that it was the supplied cable at fault.

One other thing to note – this is very fiddly to put together, especially the tiny screw that holds the drive to the unit was very hard to get right – the supplied screwdriver isn’t sufficiently magnetic and my other screwdrivers were too big for the task. Having said that I would buy a third if the need ever arose.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI was using an SSD (1Tb Samsung Evo 860) in a sata enclosure for my Apple Photos drive. Linked to an Apple Mac Mini with 16mb of RAM I was getting significant lag editing photos and scrolling through 40k+ photos.

I switched to this device with a Sabrent Rocket 1Tb M2 NVMe drive in an attempt to get round the lag. The faster write/read speeds in conjunction with the Thunderbolt housing has thankfully reduced almost all the perceptible lag, and only video editing (4k GoPro) now seems to make it work hard.

I’m not into monitoring numbers, there are plenty on here who live by that mantra. For my own personal purposes with this configuration it solved my issues.

You need to initialise the drive before use using Apple Disk Utility . My O/S version is OS-X big sur (11.2.3 as of mar-21), drive was formatted as APFS / GUID partition map.

Pros: Easy to install, tool free, no screw required (twist lock screw included), very dense aluminium casing, nicely made, matches mac lighting / design, seems a decent step up from SSD/Sata

Cons: Proprietary cable with lugs (see photo), cable is too short, cant buy another longer cable that I can see so fa

Sabrent always offer quality products outside the usual “cheap” you expect at this price point. I’d give 5 stars albeit the assembly wasn’t such a faff. I’ve seen many enclosures use this type of mount for m.2 but the holding screw would not take. Eventually managed with ease after adding servisol, definite snag though. USB-C would be nice also

Cheap, quick and easy way to re-use the 500GB M.2 SATA disk I just replaced in my PC.

2 minutes to install the disk with very clear instructions. My work Windows 10 laptop recognised it immediately as another system disk, and doing some random testing, there were no issues with speed or accessing files.

As others have mentioned, the casing does heat up, but this is standard for M.2. disks and nothing to worry about. There’s room inside the case to add some thermal padding, but not sure if worth it.

    Overall, very happy with it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve purchased many enclosures and this one is by far one of the best. I installed a Sabrent NVMe drive and it is amazing that I can get crazy speeds using USB C 3.1 at 10Gb. Formatted ExFAT this works on all my computers with ThunderBolt 3 compatibility.

THE GOOD STUFF 1. The quality of this enclosure is great and beautifully designed. 2. It is Thunderbolt 3 which of course makes it extremely fast. 3. Performance is amazing when combined with a high speed NVMe SSD drive. 4. It is truly tool free 5. Great value compared to other enclosures. THE BAD STUFF 1. A proprietary USB Thunderbolt 3 port. There are two notches in it which means only their cable will fit and at the time of writing you cannot buy a spare. But if you have any problems with the cable which I have not yet encountered, you just have to cut 2 little notches in the replacement cable and it will fit, however sabrent customer service is great and I’m sure they would send a new cable at no cost.

I’m only writing this review because I thought it was rubbish first time I used it, the drive would sort of freeze windows constantly and when I tried to benchmark it I was getting a few kilobytes per second.

After googling for a bit someone mentioned that sometimes you may need to clear out the usb slot if your drives are being super slow. I assumed it was all fine but blew inside the slot and then re attached the cable and it flew up to 450ish mbs transfer speed. Does exactly what it’s meant to and is pretty quick.

I’ve installed windows 10 on it for a potato laptop I have with a 32gb emmc which can’t even do Windows updates anymore.

Golden Review Award: 47 From Our UsersI’ll keep this short with the pertinent facts.

    THE GOOD STUFF
    1. The quality of this enclosure is amazing and beautifully engineered.
    2. It is Thunderbolt 3 which of course makes it far more expensive, exotic and of course very very fast.
    3. You won’t be disappointed with the performance if you mate it with a high speed NVMe SSD drive.
    4. It is truly tool free but give the instructions a read first – they are very helpful.
    5. It is good value compare to other enclosures.

    THE BAD STUFF
    1. Out of pure madness Sabrent have decided to make the USB Thunderbolt 3 port proprietary. There are two notches in it which means only their cable will fit and at the time of writing you cannot buy a spare.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE PORT AND CABLE
I’ve already modified a Thunderbolt 3 cable to fit Sabrent’s port so this can be easily done. It’s two small 1 x 2mm notches that need to be made which of course would invalidate any cable warranty – your choice.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersSabrent’s M.2 enclosure is perfect for making use of an old M.2 SATA drive as a fast USB 3.0 drive, but it’s also very useful if you are thinking of moving from a hard drive or smaller SSD to a new M.2 card in a laptop or PC.

The enclosure looks good in black aluminium and is really easy to assemble. The pack comes with the drive, USB 3.0 lead, screws and riser for the M.2 card and a handy screwdriver, along with basic instructions.

To install the M.2 you just need to undo the two screws at the front, slide the inside out, grab the M.2 and the riser and screw to screw it in place on the card, slide the card back in and do the screws up. It took about 6 minutes but only because the screw for the M.2 is incredibly small (as they always are).

My reason for buying this drive was to install a 500GB M.2 SATA drive in my ASUS laptop, in place of the current boot drive, a 128GB M.2). I installed this drive, used the Windows Disk Management to format it with one partition, used the free EaseUS Partition Master Free software to clone Windows and the recovery sector, then move the recovery sector around so I could re partition the Windows partition to make it larger.

The enclosure works really fast on USB 3.0 but it still manages to work fast enough to be useful on USB 2.0 ports as well, so if you only have USB 2.0 then this can still be used. The only other thing to note is that M.2 drives can get pretty hot in use and this being metal, it can obviously heat up a bit, so worth bearing in mind.

  35. CarmelMaxfield says:

     United Kingdom

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI ordered this housing because it was actually one of the cheapest available. The item is well packaged and the actual circuit board seems well designed and made. The metal housing seems like it will be very robust.

It will fit a variety of length M.2 boards and you can secure them with a small riser at the end. My M.2 board fitted perfectly and using the riser and screw ensured it wouldn’t come loose during use.
You do get spare screws and risers too which is a nice touch.
You also get a small screwdriver included in the box so you have everything you need to install your M.2 device.
The USB cable is also included.

The instructions are clear and concise with enough text and pictures to get you up and running without issues.

One small note, my board (which houses the M.2 drive) seems a little loose within the metal housing so you do get a slight rattle when fully installed. This is the same even when the cap is fully screwed into place. It is a left to right movement rather then a length movement.
This can be resolved with a bit of paper I expect.

The speed seems very good and I have managed to back up the contents of the drive via the USB and even burn a CD straight from the drive at 10x speed with no issues.

There is a light on the unit to show you when it is accessible and also when the data is transferring.
Fully plug and play on windows 7 and 10 and no drivers were required.

I certainly recommend this housing! Good company!
