Wasn’t expecting much as I’d never heard of Silverline tools, so I was pleasantly surprised at the feel and it’s performance. Used on wood and metal, it’s quite agressive ( powerful) but in a good way.

Unlike most of the power files I looked at this one has the motor in the handle which gives better access in smaller spaces and I wanted this to sand rust spots on the inside of body panels of my vespa scooter I am restoring and it works really well. .

I didn’t experience the lack of motor power mentioned by another reviewer. Good value at the price point.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought this for detail on mahogany stairs and it is brilliant. I would start with the 120 grit rather than the coarse grain since it is pretty effective!
It has a reasonable angle to the head but hard to get fully flush in some of the most awkward places. Brilliant kit though.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFairly simple to use , instructions a bit confusing for changing the belt , worked ok on rust ,poor over undersealed metal , not heavy duty enough to linish welds flat quickly ok for finishing off ,glad I bought it as it can get into narrow areas ,it can be awkward to get into position around certain underside areas of a car .Belts don’t last long ,I bought extra coarse grades

Smooth motor operation, variable pre set speed adjustment, belt tracks fine, lightweight comfortable. I haven’t used it a lot yet, just got it but can see it being very useful. Like all DIY based power tools at this competitive price range it won’t suffice use in a blast furnace or other industrial setting but for jobs around your workshop or home it will be very useful.

This is a great roduct and I have used it constantly since purchasing it on my car restorations. I used a air compressor one before and no way would i go back to that, it is a great product.

Have used this tool quite extensively on both jobs in the home/on the car/caravan, for my hobbies making rc boats n planes. A superb all round tool, and being able to swap belts with different grits for both metal and wood. Excellent especially with the variable speed settings, superb, def recommend realy good purchase. If it had also a plastic toolbox it would be even better. Mike C.

This is a great bit of kit for the home DIY-er. Probably a bit basic for a pro, but I’ve used this for sanding in a number of awkward places, as well as some detailed work and it’s served it’s purpose

Works well on small jobs used it to clean up welds. Different grit grades available for different jobs. Belts aren’t too expensive. The front grip is a little too far back so I ended up holding it nearer the front where the vents are so can get hot during heavy use. Also I suggest wearing ear plugs as it gets uncomfortable at high speed for long periods

It works as intended, but if I could change something in it, it would be a direction in which the sanding belt goes. As you use bottom part of it to sand an object, all that dirt which you just sanded down goes on you, I think that should go away from you not towards you when you use it. Besides it is easier to press and push this tool against an object like you would push ordinary file, easier to control it then.

A very handy tool for sanding in hard to reach places. Sanding wood block flooring and this handy tool was able to reach into corners and under radiators where larger sanders couldn’t reach.

Bought it to be able to sand the small gap between to pieces of wood and to help remove the paint from a wrought iron table with scrolls that are hard to access any other way. Has done its job in both cases.

Simple to operate. Click a button to release the tension on the belt to replace and then depress a lever to reapply the tension. Easy.

Perhaps not the prettiest tool in the tool box but arguably a better design than some of the expensive sanders designed for this size of belt. The clever part of the design is the adjustable head which has proved be very helpful when getting into tight spaces and makes handling it comfortable. Has adjustable speed too. No complaints. Very pleased with it. Seems to be very value for money.

    Very powerful machine
Done the job with ease. I ended up putting all other sanders away as this out performed the others.
    easy to use.
I used this to sand down my Wooden beams in my bedroom. It stripped the paint off and bought out the natural wood out.
Be wary as its powerful kit if held in same position too long it will dent the wood.
    Very pleased with this produc

Can’t really fault this. Works really well, makes light work of sanding and filing in confined spaces or small items.
Belt is easy to change and standard size. Doesn’t come off if tool is used properly – despite what other reviews have said. Even if it does, it takes seconds to put it back on.
On the whole very pleased. You’ll get through belts quite quickly, so i took the precaution of ordering a bunch in advance.

his is a very neat useful tool at a fraction of the price of an air driven model, you do quite naturally have to wear safety glasses or full face clear visor, as these like their air driven cousins do throw dust, swarff and grit particles, off the belt at a quite high rate, this a very versatile tool, especially when used for model making and surprisingly fine detailing.
I am a qualified aircraft engineer of many years, and I make steam punk robots from junk, and also rework scrap aircraft parts to upcycle into art works, and this tool is ideal for that style of work and far more too.

I have used this quite alot since I got it, much more than I thought, woodwork, metal work, paint removal etc..

Its quite a neat little machine, the manoeuvrability is useful and belts are generally inexpensive.

After longer periods of use the actually device and motor do get quite warm so have often had to stop to let it cool down by that point its time for a brew anyway.

Perhaps perfect for a generally DIY (Im using mine to help convert a track car and sand back welds etc) but wouldn’t maybe withstand commercial or long term daily use but it might surprise you.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI had wanted one of these for some years, I then needed to sand down a couple of hardwood garden bench seats to retreat them. removing damaged yacht varnish between the slats was impossible without such a tool. I was worried that the sandpaper loops would drift off their roller (this happened to me with floor board belt sander) but this tool worked perfectly from the start. Adjust the angle of the head is very simple and useful. You have to keep the sander moving all the time or it tends to cut a groove. The sanding belts seem to last a surprisingly long time. Also the motor does get rather hot but the tool comes with a 3 year warranty, I would thoroughly recommend this tool.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersThis will be used for cleaning the scroll work on a pair of iron gates. Silverline’s power file is lovely to handle, not having a motor stuck one side but in the handle, its not too heavy, well balanced, has if needed, a connection for a vacuum to collect dust, and a long reach so as to get further inside a pipe, or in a mortise lock recess. This really is a lovely tool to use. The 260w motor has plenty of power to do the job, and having a belt guide/rest above and below the bar, means you can file upwards or downwards. It comes with a rocker On/Off switch and a variable speed dial. Another benefit is the sealed steel roller bearing at the files front, some other makes use hard rubber, which is not so good for nose filing.
To change the belt, unplug the machine, and follow the instructions. If you cant find the Bars black tension release button, and you have the vacuum dust housing fitted, the button is found inside the housing. easier to find this release button if the vacuum housing is not fitted.
The two black headed screws on the nearside of the bar, dont tighten these too much, the front screw of the two will seize the bar and it’s unlikely to to move for belt changing, the rear screw ive found to have a minor effect on the bars tracking, so again, not too tight, mine was quite loose when the machine arrived, and a very delicate adjustment here corrected my bars tracking of the belt. Perhaps leave well alone and return the power file if the belt tracking is too far out. Or try another belt.
The only failing I found, there is no official provision for tracking the belt. Although its not that far out of alignment it would be very useful if this tool did have this option. But then it would be more expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to use, plenty powerful enough

This really is one of those tools that you will think “how did I manage before I got this?”. I was a bit sceptical as I’ve got most sanders and and event a Fein multitool for tricky cutting/sanding. However this belt file allows me to sand/remove material in tricky spots. With a 40 grit belt, it also allows me to remove large depths of material in a small location very quickly – almost like a chisel. See video review for a look at how the tool works. I’d recommend this! It’s a great gift for the avid DIYer and is going to be one of my favourite power tools for to save using a traditional file.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersThis came as a surprise as its really quite compact compared to the B & D versions I have had for years (2 of and just about still going..) that lack the balance of this model as the motor is within its sleek body and not as the B & D models where its slung on the side and makes for a wieldy device considering the narrow working area it uses up. I have had Silverline products now over many years, since they started I would think, but the worse was an orange coloured belt sander supposedly listed as I recall ‘for heavy duty use’ or whatever but it barely lasted a year with occasional use and it finally gave out a bang with a blue flash and was thereafter mucho kaput – deaded – no longer working – so it was interesting to see if things have moved on with the current range. You get two belts supplied with this model and the first thing you notice with this sander is how light it is, fall and fits well in the hand almost like a decent sized torch, with placed at the rear out of harms way, a ‘on/off’ switch (naturally) plus a wheel type speed control that is more than ample as I found on the lowest setting for finishing some MDF off. It has a decent length of cable, plus the adjustable up & down ‘blade’ or sanding area is handy for getting into assorted areas and could be a boon to model makers, plus a small but basic owners manual – what is there to explain about it really? – and it comes with a 3 year warranty by registering on-line which I did. In use it works well, quite comfortable to use in fact and streets, or roads, in front of the B & D models as outlined above and I only hope it lasts longer than the above belt sander (please dear God, please..) but with a 3 year warranty perhaps the makers have some faith in it but so far it works wonderfully well and also it was delivered in very quick time as a added bonus. Should the situation change as to life expectancy and not succumb to the Bang n Blue Flash Deaded Syndrome, I will update accordingly. Recommended easily — 5 Stars

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersWanted to sand down an old garden bench i.e. plenty of awkward corners and hard to get at spots. My other sanders couldn’t do the job. Bought this sander not expecting much but thought I would give it a try. It was brilliant! Expected to go through sanding belts every few minutes; I am still on the original belt even though I must have used it for three to four hours. Expected the belt to slip off, but when it did, it was really my fault, pushing it too hard. Got into those hard to reach corners, that I would have had problems even by hand sanding. For under 30 pounds, I couldn’y ask for anything better. May not be up to professional standards, but for an amateur like me it saved me a great deal of time and effort.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our Usersi bought this power file after my disappointment with the B@D 900e. this machine is less powerful than my other, which in many ways is better. some orbital sanders have a 350 watt + motor. if you measure the contact area of the pad, on the bottom of the o/sander and measure the contact area of the power file, you will see that the sander is about 9 times bigger. so why do you need 350/400 watt motors beets me. this machine is slimmer, than some of the others, obviously because of it’s design. the motor doesn’t stick out the side like the other one which would in some cases inhibit it’s use. it is light to handle, well balanced and quiet. not only that it is about half the price of the B@D

Golden Review Award: 39 From Our UsersIt’s one of those gadgets that appear to do little – and you get by.. but honestly, the time, effort and quality of results have left me looking a hero indoors..
First it did a perfect job of eliminating coving joins to the point where they’re invisible..
Next it removed glazing silicone residue (that was stuck onto plaster) from around a window and door. (this in itself was good enough reason to buy)
Then it smoothed off tiling edges..
Then prepped some chair spindles for painting,.
Then rounded off some metal components..

You end up just looking for “stuff to do” with it..
It does get a bit hot after a few minutes use, but that might just be my hands covering up the motor vents by accident, honestly for the money it’s a gem of a thing..
It also comes with a couple of spare belts – just in case you were wondering.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have been using this slim belt file in the refurbishment of old chairs that we have been re-upholstering: it is good for removing old varnish and cleaning up joints, a job it does very well. It does get right into the corners, but very nearly does, requiring a minimal amount of scrapping or sanding by hand. This is a budget priced tool that works well and represents good value for money. Sanding belts can be purchased in a variety of grades to clean and leave a fairly smooth finish. It is easy to use and the belt can be angled to assist use. Clean regularly to avoid a build upof dust which can clog the spring mechanism that holds the sanding belts in place. Other than that, it works like a dream.
