Ignore the traile
Todd Field is a genius. The trailer suggests that this is some inaccessible arthouse highly stylised piece. It isn’t. What it is is a darkly provocative look at power, those who wield it and what happens as the ground moves beneath their feet. It is captivating and moves at quite a pace. The final reel is delightfully ambiguous. Make sure you are paying attention. Not a film during which you can afford to be checking your phone 😉
I was thinking about this for days after I watched it. Both dense and entertaining.
Monsters are not always monster-looking
Excellent character study, the best film of the year, subtle portrait of driven people who abuse their power, incredibly three-dimensional, great beauty and subtlety, great insight and great horror, all played out within a societal context that actively seems to encourage people to become isolated, manipulative ego-maniacs. Sometimes, all feeling dies, accept for animals and children, then the only feeling left behind is for work, which becomes the monster that eats itself. Magnificent piece of work.
A Most Impressive Film
With its robust 2 hours and 38 minutes, this film explores the stardom and downfall of a fictitious director of orchestra. For me, it is one of the best movies of the past few years: extraordinarily powerful, with Cate Blanchett at her usual best, flanked by a great Noemie Merlant and Nina Hoss! It is a film about the current pc culture in which any accusation, even if not corroborated by any proof, can ruin a person’s career. A wonderful example is a young and woke trainee director who refuses to play Bach (BACH!!!) as ‘White, male cis composers are just not my thing’. To which Blanchett replies: ‘Don’t be so eager to be offended…the narcissism of small differencces leads to the most boring conformity!’ A wonderful work of art!
5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this film
No surprise that Cate Blanchett is superb, but she plays such a complicated, destructive yet gifted character so faultlessly. Oh, and beautiful music thrown in too.
Interesting
I hovered between 4 and 5 stars, but ultimately awarded 5 because it was different. Whether you need the background of classical music to tell a story about the shifting of power I doubt – on the one hand a lot of the dialogue involved technicalities that few would understand, on the other with all the noise and the arm waving it did rather suit Blanchett and she certainly delivered a performance full of panache
