I bought the identical model over 25 years ago and it never gave a day’s trouble – until it stopped working recently. It would have cost more to service it than to buy a new one so that’s what I did. Hope I get as good use out of this one as the last. Keeps great time !

I’m very pleased with this Citizen diver.
I received the newer hacking version.

I bought it because I am so impressed with my blue Citizen promaster eco drive diver.

I looked at two Seiko’s 3 X the price but both had alignment issues The promaster has no such problem.

For the price 165 this is an excellent watch and at the moment is +5 seconds a day.

Took a week to come from Germany.
    Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersReally great looking automatic diver.
The gloss black face looks great with the chrome lume filled indices.
The bezel lines up nicely with a sixty click action.
I really like the crown at the 8 o’clock position and it wears very comfortably.
The size is perfect and the rubber strap comfortable.
It hand winds and is hackable also.
I paid 149 at time of purchase which is a bargain.
Grab one, I doubt you would be disappointed.
I hope this review helps you.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI received this watch probably 6 weeks ago and haven’t taken it off!

It was supplied in a round presentation case inside a box. The watch is very attractive looking the bezel and case are nice and shiny, the strap is a black sporty rubber one with a Citizen buckle.

The dial is very legible, the markers are unmistakable, as are the also luminous hands. Love the bubble on the seconds hand! The day/date is white script on a black background, with Sunday in red. It also has dual Spanish days.

The bezel makes a reassuring clicking and is uni directional. It can get easily knocked so if used for dives, be aware. Suspect serious diver’s would have a dive computer anyway.

The strap is really comfortable and looks really good on this watch. I was going to replace it with a NATO strap, but have been won over. I’ve got a Citizen Ecozilla watch which is much bigger and thicker than this, however it’s strap is very uncomfortable.

The accuracy seems pretty spot on, not had to adjust so far. Also like that the crown is screw down for added protection. The watch is rated to 200m which more than enough protection.

Overall the watch looks fantastic on the wrist, smart or dressed down. The movement is not as smooth as a Rolex or Omega but it’s probably more likely to be my “beater” rather than a prestigious make as it’s fantastically wearable. I think it’s great value and looks very smart, get plenty of comments about it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this watch in June 2012, the watch has been on the original rubber strap, a NATO strap and now a milanese strap, it looked good on all these straps,
The watch itself has never missed a beat during its 10 years on my wrist, it is mostly worn during leisure time walking, swimming, cycling etc. it has aged better than me and looks just as good as the day I bought it.
The lume is still strong and the time keeping is really as good as many of the much more expensive watches that I own, this is a real workhorse and I would recommend it to anyone needing a good looking, well built, reliable tool watch that will still look good after years of Faithfull service.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLooks good in all lighting conditions, fits well for smaller wrist size. Model appears to be updated, bezel is slightly different from original, strap doesnt come with the ND depth and this uses calibre 8204, not like the previous which was an 8203, which means on this one you can make the seconds hand stop when you pull the crown out fully.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis has been in production since 1994(i asked Citizen) its a icon classic, and good reason too,it is the classic looking divers watch other watch makers copy, easy to read, amazing lume, good rotating bezel that smoothly rotates but doesnt slip, nothing fussy just a good clear screen. Day and date, its hackable for accurate time setting.the crown isnt too awkward to get to and screws down without crossing the threads, interesting how its a leftie too so doesn’t dig into the wrist.i fitted my own nylon strap as i find the rubber ones bulky and not comfortable.
(Ive since bought a steel bracelet with the divers double locking clasp and fitted that, i bought it from Amazon)
I collected eco drive watches but have since started to collect automatics also, its convenient how they dont need to be in the sun to recharge, and its still accurate.
The watch is slightly smaller than some of the bigger divers so is comfortable and looks stylish without being over stating.
Its a tough rugged watch that can be used for outdoor persuits which it is designed for while also keeping its looks that can still be worn on a special occasion or something formal.
10/10 treat yourself you wont regret it.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI received the watch literally the day after I ordered it but things weren’t quite what they seemed. Opening the parcel with anticipation I was floored with disappointment to find the with utter astonishment the box in which the watch should of come was in-fact empty. No watch. Got on immediately to Amazon and to their credit no questions asked, they re-ordered it for me. This time it took just under a week to arrive.
The watch itself is superb. I’m a bit of a dive watch collector and this is up there with the rest. No QC issues, bezel aligns perfectly and has good 60 click feel. The crown is a little fiddly but that’s about the only thing I could critique. The loom is fantastic and it overall looks great. I put it on my Timegrapher and got very good readings. It was running within about + 5 seconds a day. Just a warning the miyota movement incorporates a rotating weight inside to wind it from your wrist movements and that can be quite noisy. One more thing. The advert showed it came in a yellow scuba tank looking can, mine did not, just a plain citizen box.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersCracking watch. Is it value for money? Well I guess that depends on what you normally spend on a watch.
Its easy to read from any angle, its automatic, the straps comfy.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIf you want details of this watch and why it might be a cheaper alternative to the seiko skx007 then the Internet is full of comparisons. What i will say is the watch I received has an upgraded movement, the 8204 and the lume is much improved. Both these changes, I was not expecting. Its an excellent ISO rated diver and although i still love my skx007 I think this watch is pretty close and has a look and charm of its own. Well worth the money and perhaps a strap change is about all I will do. Recommended if you do not want to pay the inflated prices for the now discontinued skx.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersThis watch has out shone all expectations. I bought it to use as a Day 2 Day watch instaed of my Tag/Heuer and it keeps very good time for an automatic, more accurate than my Tag it seems, however the tag loses 1.5 minutes a day and has since new some 25/30 years. The citizen although chunky does its job very well, it is simple in design yet modern in look appealing to the modern athletic man who is an avid sports minded person. The only slight fault is the winder lock takes some locking but once locked very solid. It is a shame that the production has ended as for me mechanical watches will always out last Quartz or solar power, accuracy in these may be better but life is not so good.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a very good watch (Not sure why there is detail about Citizens eco drive movement here as this watch is an automatic) Its a nice comfortable size at 40mm and with only the minimal amount of light it glows well in darkness. It comes on a rubber strap that I found far too clumsy to wear and ended up switching to a nato strap which fitted really well with it (Good thing about this watch is the strap is very easy to remove)

Some things I didn’t like about this watch and the reason I knock a star off are these.

    1. The bezel can be very easily moved, I have worn this at work where I have been wearing a shirt and checked the time to see the bezel has moved a little. Now that’s not a big issue for me as I am not a diver but considering this is supposed to be a divers watch it seems ridiculous that a divers watch should have a bezel that can be moved by someone’s shift cuffs!

    2. The crown can be at times a little fiddly to use that while I didn’t have a real problem with some might and I can see that as being a bit of a pain to some people. I also found the crown seemed a but wobbly which gave me a bit of a concern.

I have never really checked the time to see how accurate this one is and it comes in a nice Citizen box but these 2 things made me knock a star off. I know some of compared this to the Seiko 007 and I have never owned one of these however I have owned an Orient Mako and found that to be a lot more of a robust build than this one.

One other thing to point out is that this is an automatic watch and uses one of Citizens basic automatic movements that while tried and tested can rattle a bit (Again no real problem) The sweep on the second at times can look a bit jittery too.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersCitizen automatic 200m on ‘rubber’
I love this watch. I have many…..this is not only my favourite but one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

Bit OTT you may say so bear with me:

    1. It looks cool. Not an hommage to a Rolex nor trying too hard to be original. It’s not too big nor too small but sits on the wrist just right. A crown at 8 o’clock adds to this originality.

    2. The function and practacality of this thing is legendary at least in my world. I do a real job involving power tools and hammers and stuff and then go diving for shellfish after dark. After 3 months this watch shows no signs of wear or tear. No scratches visible to NE on either body or crystal. It’s even stood up to several 40 ft cliff jumps into the ocean without missing a beat.

    3. Time keeping is excellent. I wear a number of different watches at weekends but my Citizen is my day2day watch and it keeps great time. I don’t do quartz, only automatics, and this baby is as good, if not better than a Rolex.

    4. Living with it. So easy. Smash it around on your wrist all day without a second thought whether above or below the surface no problems whatsoever.

    Should I buy it?

Why yes kind friend. But do it soon cos it’s no longer produced so is going up in price by the day.

Hope you enjoyed my review and found it useful.

I like automatic Japanese diver watches and, having read the reviews, wanted to add this to my small collection. The problem turned out to be I’m spoiled by an existing watch, my Seiko Orange Monster. The Citizen is a good watch but not as good as the remarkable OM (or Black Monster if you prefer that more conservative version).

Although the OM has a higher list price it was actually cheaper via Amazon, with a big discount. The Citizen doesn’t feel as substantial as the OM; its bezel is much looser and too easy to turn accidentally for a diver; and for me at least it has less ‘wrist-presence’ and feels cheaper.

It certainly has strengths though: slightly more accurate than the OM for instance.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI’ve been very impressed with this watch, which I purchased as a day-to-day alternative to an Omega De Ville Coaxial. The Omega’s calibre 2628 movement is COSC certified, but the Citizen seems to keep time almost as well.

There have been one or two niggles; firstly, I find that the bezel rotates quite freely, and on one occasion moved whilst I have been timing something which was frustrating. The second is that screwing in the crown can be a tad awkward as the spring is quite strong. I made a mistake in this respect, when I ended up simply winding the watch instead of screwing in the crown- despite thinking that I was applying enough pressure. The upshot was that moisture got into the watch when I next got it wet and formed condensation on the crystal… which brings me to Citizen’s customer service, which was excellent.

I visited their web site, found the UK service centre and followed the instructions to send the watch in. I had a quick chat with a gentleman on the phone during which I outlined my stupidity, and included a very short covering letter when I posted the watch. It was returned within 48-hours later without any hint of condensation. No charges, other than the cost of posting it to them. Well done to Citizen and their UK service centre, this level of customer service exceeded my expectations.

Back to the watch, and despite the minor niggles that I mentioned above, I find that I am liking it more each day. It’s a very easy watch to live with – it’s not overly obtrusive like some larger divers can be, the position of the crown is great for anyone that is active (I cycle a lot and am glad to wear something that doesn’t dig into my wrist) the face is clear and uncluttered, and the lume is good at night. It’s also seriously good value for an ISO 6425 certified dive watch, and I look forward to using it for its intended use next time I get a chance to go diving.

I bought it to make a present, so didn’t use it, but had a good look at it. Made to be the citizen alternative to the well known seiko skx007, has a much better look, with a deeper black dial that looks really great. It is ten times nicer than the website image, and a bit smaller than the spec would suggest. The miyota mvmt has a great reputation, so I expect the receiver to be happy with it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI just love this watch, everything from look to construction and fit is perfect. Been wearing it non stop for a week now, and the time is spot on, no more than 5-10 sec gain. Much better than my Invicta Pro Diver Automatic with Seiko NH35A. Also, the lume is great, no problem telling time during the night.

Some time in the future, I might try to find a stainless steel bracelet for this watch, as I do prefere these from rubber. Sadly, the only Citizen bracelet available for this watch is of the “folded steel” kind, where this watch really deserves something better.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI bought the citizens 200m divers watch because I had always wanted a diver style watch, even though I don’t dive. I had looked at Omega Seamaster but felt I couldn’t justify paying all that money for a watch.
The choice then came down to the Citzen or the Seiko 007 divers watch. I was wanting a watch with a bracelet and will probably buy one for this at some point but for the moment I’m quite happy with the rubber strap that came with the watch. I chose the Citizen over the Seiko because the supplier that was selling the Seiko was temporarily out of stock when I was about to purchase and I’d also read reviews that the Seiko had a ‘taller’ profile than the Citizen and as I don’t have massive wrists wanted something a little less in your face. The citizen is a perfect size for me and doesn’t look like a kitchen clock sitting on my wrists but is still imposing enough to look good.
I have only had it for about 10 days now and I’m very happy with it. It is a solid enough construction and feels really well built. The movement is nice to watch and second hand sweeps around the face with constant precision. The uni-directional bezel has a solid click action and isn’t too loose. The luminous ‘dots’ on the hands and hour markings are big and bright enough when in a darkened room, so I’m assuming they will be even better for someone who is using it for diving. Watch was easy to set and screw down crown worked a treat.
I am very happy with this watch and would recommend it anyone who wants to buy a quality divers watch without breaking the bank

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersYou can pay thousands for an automatic. I have a Tag Heuer SEL I bought years ago, I almost bought a Rolex Submariner but decided to wait… wish I’d bought it now as such funds are no longer at my disposal!

I’ve been looking for a ‘reasonably priced’ automatic for a few months. I narrowed down the choices to the Citizen NY0040-09E or the Seiko SKX007K, weighing up the pros and cons of each. Eventually I decided on the NY0040-09E as I preferred the look of the dial and I like the crown being at the 8 o’clock position as the conventional position (at 3 o’clock), can lead to the crown digging into your wrist/hand.

The watch keeps good time, it can gain/lose seconds each day. There is a way you can lie the watch down and leave it over night to either speed up or decrease the speed. I found that out on a website somewhere but have lost the link now sorry! Just google it.

The Bezel is unidirectional (it only turns one way), and turns without any resistance. Some may not like that, they may want a little more resistance but I’m happy with it. For those unaware, a ‘unidirectional bezel’ is used when diving to keep an eye on dive time. It is unidirectional to ensure that if you knock the bezel and it turns (whilst diving), all that will happen is it will ‘appear’ that you have less ‘air time’ left than you actually do have. So you’ll surface with enough air in your tank.

The dial is a deep black which I like. If I were to pick a negative of the dial it would be that the chrome surrounding the lume at each hour position is a bit too shiny for my liking but that’s a personal thing.

The rubber strap lends a certain rugged, work like quality to the time piece. I like that but it’s also a slight negative (again, this is a personal view). It’s such a beautiful dial that I feel it deserves something a little more flattering. Having searched the internet I found some photos of the NY0040-09E on a stainless steel bracelet. I later found out that the bracelet was an original made by citizen (model number 59-J0609), but only supplied to certain countries. The bracelet is brushed stainless steel, has a lockable clasp and has an extending ratchet (this is used when attaching the watch to your wrist with a wetsuit on). I immediately knew that was the bracelet I wanted my citizen automatic on (see link below for a photo of the watch on the original bracelet. Hopefully amazon will allow the link). I think you’ll agree, the bracelet looks great in either a sports setting or business. However, trying to obtain the bracelet led me a merry dance! I decided the best bet would be to contact Citizen UK to try and source the bracelet. They informed me that unfortunately the bracelet was no longer available as it was discontinued! They did suggest a different bracelet that would fit but I didn’t like the look of it, it didn’t have the ratchet and it didn’t bear any resemblance to the original 59-J0609. Disheartened, I decided to have a look around for similar looking bracelet. There are a few bracelets available but the rounded end links need to be right for the bracelet to fit with the watch. Eventually however, I found a watch strap dealer on ebay, based in California, selling the 59-J0609! Being as this was ebay I was worried that perhaps it could be a rip-off or such (not that I could really see anyone bothering to rip-off a Citizen watch strap!). So I got back onto Citizen UK. They then informed me that the bracelet may well be available in the US and… if I wanted to purchase one, they could source one from their Far East suppliers! So I went from being informed that the bracelet was discontinued and therefore no longer available, to we can get you one! The issue then however was time. They couldn’t get one from the Far East until August! So I decided to purchase from the Californian dealer. The cost is around 35. Not a price a really wanted to pay for a watch strap but it’s almost exactly the same price I was quoted for the suggested ‘alternative’ bracelet so I convinced myself to go for it. I have literally just made payment for it so it won’t be here for a while.

Anyway, that’s all from me. I hope some of what I have had to say helps others make a decision on purchasing either way. I can’t wait to get the stainless steel bracelet on mine! 🙂

    All the best watch fans.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis watch is one of the legends. There are watches which are perfect. Perfect in the way they have been designed and improved during the years taking the materials, mechanics and price into account. You cannot build a better automatic watch of this class and purpose anymore today if you started from scratch. That is what makes this watch so interesting for me: It is the best of it’s kind and price. Btw: My watch is inaccurate for only 4 seconds a day under heavy use/arm movements. Compare this to other automatic / non-quartz watches below 1000 GBP…

Great price and delivered by Amazon on time as usual.

This watch is a classic and looks great with suit or casual clothes

Made in Germany, works perfectly and exudes quality.

I’ve been looking at this watch for a number of years now and wish I’d bought one when I first came across it.
Adjustment knob on the left hand side is a bit unusual but it’s easy to use and in my opinion gives it that little bit of individuality which helps it stand out in the crowd.

If you can find one …buy it, as I dont think they are producing these any more.

My son likes it too which is a bit of a worry!

Nice and solid and not too big for my wrist, but comfortable to wear. Strap seems solid and sturdy. It does seem to gain a minute over a week but not a problem. I did not go with Citizen Eco Drive or Seiko Kinetic as I don’t intend to wear it all the time (bought it for diving and outdoor sports), and I hear you need to keep the batter/capacitor charged else they do not charge so well. The automatic just needs a minute or two of shaking and the time resetting if you have not worn it for a while. I was put off the battery one as I also heard getting the batteries changed is expensive, and they may leak if the seal is not OK after battery is changed. Happy with purchase

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersOne of the reasons I bought this watch was because the winding knob/crown is at 8 O’clock instead of the more usual 3 O’clock.
This seems like it would be (well & actually is) a lot more comfortable as the crown won’t/can’t dig into your wrist.

What I didn’t realise was how odd that has turned out to be, not sure if this will wear off later.
Initially when I set the time, I automatically oriented the watch so that the crown was where it would “normally” be.
Consequently because there are no actual hour markings on the dial, I set the time to completely the wrong place.
This is also because being right handed I tend to want the winder at 3 O’clock-ish just to adjust it.

As I said, I’m not sure if this “oddness” will wear off, at the moment every time I look at the watch sitting (very comfortably & lightly) on my wrist,
I’m mentally re-orienting it so that the winder is in the “correct” place.

The other thing that I found not so helpful about the watch is that when you are adjusting it, you can’t stop the second hand, to get it set to the correct seconds.
So although you can set the minute hand correctly, the actual second hand will always be anything up to 30 seconds out.
(of course given the quoted accuracy of the watch, presumably this can/may change every day)

I’m hoping at some time in the future when I look at a “normal” watch it will look “funny” as I will have adjusted to the slightly odd visuals

However plan B is to buy the Citizen NY2300-09E instead/as well, which has the crown in the “right” 3 O’clock place.
I think it’s got the same movement inside as well, and also has the advantage that the dial has hour numbers round the inside/sloping bit of the bezel
If you can find one with the same black dial/plain black bezel it is probably going to be a bit cheaper than the NY0040, but may not be quite as nice to look at.

On this watch the “elapsed time” rotating bezel has a visually distinctive pattern of alternating 5 teeth and smooth patches, unlike the “NY2300” which has teeth all the way round.
The rotary movement itself is very positive in it’s action, one click per “minute”, with no sloppy backlash, which is of course good,
but this does seem to make it stiffer that the action on other watches.

The other thing I like about this watch is the way the second hand sweeps around continuously with barely perceptible micro movements, instead of the normal 1 second jumps, very classy…

( I’m not sure if this will get deleted, but for an visual comparison of the 2 watches see: forums.watchuseek.com/f21/citizen-ny2300-09e-vs-ny0040-09e-221234.html )

As I’ve just bought one of these, so I can’t comment on anything long term.
The other thing I can’t comment on is the strap, as I swapped it for the webbing & velcro strap off my old watch,
which I prefer as it means less mucking about with clasps/holes when putting on/taking off & I get a better circumference fitting.
(the watch easily takes a standard 20mm wide fitting)

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersThis model has been around a while, and I bought one over 20 years ago.

Routine wear and immersion in water (salt, fresh and pool) has done nothing except remove the No-Deco limits table printed on the strap – and if you’re a diver you’d not want to be relying on that anyway.

Despite much use there are no scratches on the face or the body of the watch, the strap is still strong with no significant signs of wear and the uni-direction bezel works like new. The hands are still strongly luminous, and it still keeps god time, although it did need a service 10 years ago…

I don’t have very big wrists, but this watch doesn’t look big on me – even though it is pretty chunky, and can’t really be worn under work shirts.

I really can’t recommend this watch strongly enough – if you need a ‘timeless’ divers-style watch – buy this – it’ll outlast you!

The only down side is that the day/date text is a bit small and finely printed – so isn’t always so easy to read.
