I love how easy it is to install Windows from an USB drive now, on a new hard drive, or SSD, with the Operating system aleady registered to the system bios. It used to be so fiddly and time consuming. Delivered when it said it would be, and up and running in no time.

I’ve fitted around 20 of these so far in both desktops and laptops and not have any problems.
Ideal for O/S drive with data on seperate drive.
As prices have fallen over time I’m now using 480Gb drives for laptops.

These drives are incredibly reliable. I’ve never used any other brand, so when it came to buying two new SSD drives that were to replace ageing portable platter drive’s, Crucial was my choice – the only choice I would have ever made in fact.

My old SATA hard drive died in my desktop PC. As it’s an old machine I didn’t need a large drive. I don’t do online gaming.

This SSD is perfect for my needs. Plugged in straight away and loaded my version of Windows 10 easily. Boot time is about 5 seconds and it runs very smoothly. If you’re after a simple, speedy upgrade to your PC get one. I wish I bought 2.

Using it in my Truenas setup with another of the same drives in a “Mirrored Array” for the boot drive.

Need to order another 2 at some point so I have 2 spares just in case, but other than that they are fine.

Windows when ran on them works fine and is responsive with no slow downs.

    Can easily recommend.

It’s not fast like the newer M2 but the speed is real and is doing just fine for any computer with SATA connector. The price/performance ratio for the 240GB is good and I recommend this.

Bought this finally when my PC decided to load at a snail pace. Was able to transfer all files from HDD (windows OS mostly) and now my computer boots up within a few seconds. Would highly recommend for anybody having boot time issues. Worth the upgrade and cheaper option than buying new PC.

Have been using this drive as my OS boot drive and as storage for a couple of games for a few months now with no issue. Very easy setup, simply connecting to the PSU and a SATA wire to the motherboard. Load times are relatively quick, especially for the price (paid 25.98). Would definitely recommend this SSD.

I use the Crucial BX500 with my LG TV to enable the use of the record facilties plus the pause and rewind. Most TV’s have these facilities but don’t come with any internal storage which enables them to be used. So adding an external drive turns your TV into a PVR. I also store all my photos and home videos on it so they can be viewed on the TV. For a while I used a standard portable drive, but noticed it becoming fairly hot, even when not recording. This doesn’t seem to be the case with solid state drives, which are also totally noiseless. While the increased data transfer isn’t especially necessary, it does make fast forward and rewind much quicker. A very useful addition to any TV with recording facilities.

My hard drive was corrupted so decided to purchase a replacement SSD. This SSD is an amazing value product that instantly speeds up a laptop/pc and makes it feel better than new. My laptop now boots up in under 10 seconds and navigating windows is very fast and responsive.

Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a replacement or new drive.

Easy to install in most laptops and PCs.

From what I can tell it is of great quality and I have had no problems with it. 100% the best SSD money can buy under 30.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to speed-up my father’s low spec HP Pavilion laptop. Even though he uses it for emails, letter writing and internet shopping, booting Windows 10 and opening Chrome took in excess of 2 minutes.

Cloning the windows partition of the barely used 1TB stock WD HDD was a simple task with the software supplied on Crucial’s website. It took less than 30 minutes to complete.

I opted for a 240GB drive as my parents would never fill the capacity. They don’t download, play games or store data. The small capacity and the price of a known brand are a winning combination.

Now fitted, the time from start-up to Gmail on Chrome is 35 seconds. My old man is astonished and I’m pleased with the results.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersPurchased to upgrade an old Acer Aspire 5-series laptop, which someone had foolishly installed Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit o.s. despite it only having an Intel Celeron 540 processor, and 2GB, 533MHz, DDR2 RAM! The machine was so slow as to be virtually unusable. You couldn’t even run You Tube or open photos.

Changing the processor to an Intel C2Duo, T7500, and upping the RAM to 3GB, made You Tube and opening photos doable but still slow. The boot up time of 1m 40secs, however, was ridiculous, compared to a more modern machine.

My first thought was to put it back through the site with 4 letters, and get something else. I liked the tank-like build quality, however, and the screen appeared to be fairly new, so I reckoned it was worth experimenting further.

There are many cheap SSDs available, but one has to be careful because, as with memory cards, you could end up with something dodgy which isn’t what it claims to be. Best to stick to recognized brands; Crucial being one of them. At just over 26 for 240GB, this was also one of the cheapest.

It arrived quickly, and I was surprised by the total lack of metal. 100% plastic, but well made nonetheless. Impressed by the fact that though thinner, the width and length were the same (see pictures) and it fitted the laptop’s metal caddy, perfectly (see photos).

I’ve noticed some reviewers mention the need to use third-party cloning software such as Macrium Reflex, as an alternative to the Arconis True Image software recommend by Crucial. Apparently, some owners state that their SSD wasn’t recognized by it, and for those that were, many have reported manually adjusting the partition size, rather than leaving the software set to auto. People have also spoken of the need to allow over 2 hours for cloning.

Well, without my new SDD connected to laptop by SATA to USB cable (see photos) the Acornis software wouldn’t open, because it detected no Crucial device connected. When connected, however, it did, and the process took roughly an hour to clone a 320GB HDD, with about 120GB of data; and the auto setting worked fine. The ‘time remaining’ message was all over the place (often the case!) first stating in excess of 2 hours, then 1 hour 40 after only three minutes, etc.

Acornis True Image software is massively large (600Mb) compared to Macrium Reflex (about 130Mb). One reviewer stated that Acornis isn’t free; you need to pay to use it! Not so in my experience. Maybe some folk are sold fake Crucial SSDs, which the software is good enough to spot!

So, was it worth it? The boot-up time on Windows 10 Pro, 64, is now 27 seconds (previously 1 minute 40 seconds) so yes, in terms of boot-up time. Overall, however, it’s still slow opening apps; and only marginally quicker than before, so I’m not overly impressed. Can’t be bothered to conduct scientific tests to confirm just how small the advantage is!

One big surprise was no noticeable reduction in noise. Clearly, the old HDD was not to blame, even though it seemed likely, and for me was a motivating factor for changing to an SSD!

Only time will tell whether this is as good a deal as it seems, but one thing which did bother me was the short length of warranty (only a year). Compared to a 5-year warranty, it might prove false economy! Would I buy it again in retrospect? Probably not! I’m quite interested in the even-cheaper, 500GB, hybrid drive by Seagate, on Amazon at only 25. It loads Windows as fast as an SSD; and with a spin speed of 7200rpm, probably wouldn’t feel much slower in use. The memory capacity, however, is over double though!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe SDD is a standard fit for most hard drive bays in laptops or desktops, some machines may need an adapter but my laptop didn’t, the HDD was failing on this old laptop I had bought used about 5 years ago. Everything is fine on it but it was very slow.

The upgrade was easy, remove old HDD, remove small plastic adapter plate and put it on SSD (it only goes on one way so you can’t screw it up) secure SSD with old screws from original HDD and install windows.

I’ve been using it for two days and the machine is faster, quieter and Windows 10 installed relatively quicker for it’s size, I can recommend this drive, although your install journey maybe easier or more difficult because I didn’t need the data off the old drive and my laptop is easy to upgrade.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf anyone is thinking twice about swapping their HDD out for an SSD, don’t delay. The speed improvement in the laptop is phenomenal. I put this CT240BX500SSD in a 12 year old Dell Inspiron 15 N5010 Intel Core i5 450M 2 core 2.4gHz which was becoming unusable due to time it took to do anything on it. It’s now like a new laptop and good for another few years. Make sure you max out your DDR ram at the same time as this also makes a huge difference but not as much as the SSD speeds. I hadn’t realised how much the mechanical HDD drives slow PC’s down. PC start up is now about 15 secs instead of the 5 mins it used to take.

  23. Anonymous says:

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI won’t go into detail about the speed because enough people have left speed test results. All I will say is that for my specific use case the speed is exactly what I need.

I bought this as a second storage device in my Asus FX505dy to install Linux onto as I study Mathematics and there are some nice tools on Linux for maths exploration. From start of install to full OS install took about 20 min. And most of that would have been messing with the laptop case so no fault of the drive.

I didn’t have to do anything to the UEFI settings and the Linux installer detected it and used the full capacity without question. It is the fastest Linux install I have ever done.

I ran some tests that were taking a long time, Collatz Conjecture stuff, and it was not just noticeably faster but left me wondering why I was struggling with a mechanical drive all this time for Linux.

I have not tested gaming performance because I am not into that kind of thing anymore. So I cannot say if it loads Call of Battlefield Fortnight 5 in 0.5 micro seconds. But what I can say is that Python and Julia programs run great on it. Word processing and heavy spreadsheet use is snappy and incredibly responsive and boot time into a full Linux OS takes about 5 seconds, give or take if I have installed any new packages.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOver four years I’ve bought and installed seven Crucial SSD’s of a either 240Gb, 500Gb, or 1TB capacity. In every case the physical installation has been straightforward. I’ve used the Acronis software to transfer operating systems and data. I can’t recommend using the cloning option, I’ve always resorted to the backup and restore method, which has worked in every case although not without having to negotiate some issues in most cases. Typically these revolve around the BIOS settings of the particular PC or laptop. All of the machines I’ve updated to SSD are under my own roof, wife, kids etc. All of them are still fully functional without glitches. If you’re upgrading a laptop make sure to buy the optional USB/SATA cable to enable external hooking up of the SSD before the swap.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy daughter’s laptop is the only one that has standard sata hdd. WINDOWS 10 startup was a bit slow as I couldn’t stand the slowness so couldn’t blame her for getting annoyed waiting for it to start and get on with the work.

    Package Content:
    1x 240GB SSD drive
    1x Rubber seal
    1x instruction leaflet

When it comes to internal drives and memory modules I have always trusted crucial. This again, I bought it during the Black friday deal, couldn’t beat that anywhere at all.

Installation is simple. Install the Acronis app on to the existing OS and attach the drive using the USB cable (USB to SSD). you will need to buy this separately. Simply follow the migration process when you start up Acronis and the OS will be copied across onto the SSD.

Unplug the laptop from the mains and using the right tools, unscrew the laptop backing on the hard disk section and install the SSD drive. Easy to install and the storage capacity is enough for the OS and the basic application for the kids laptop.

Power on the laptop and it should fire up within 30 seconds.

Now all the laptops in the house are upgraded to ssd and no more waiting time for the OS to boot.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is the second one I have by bought. Original one had been to upgrade an I5 Lenovo which came with a 128Gb SSD. To be fair this replacement wasnt as fast as the original stock item but it was still a worthy upgrade for the extra space. The recent upgrade had been in my partners lenovo AMD A9 v110 which came with a 1 TB 5400rpm blue WD stock Hdd. Boot start up was so slow it was unbelievable (approx 5 mins before we could do a thing on it) despite having less than 50 GB of space used. Opening programs was also painfully slow. Watched a you tube video on how to change the drive and put a new install of windows 10 version 2004 on it. This laptop is completly different now. Gets to the password screen in around 20 seconds. Haven’t transferred any large files so cannot clarify it’s performance in this regard. For less than 30.00 it’s has made a very noticeable difference. At the same time bought a 2.5 inch caddy and put the WD in this for and extra 1TB of External Portable storage. Win win situation. Separate note usable space on this SSD is actually 223gb rather than 240gb

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI bought this for a VERY specific purpose – and it is perfect! Specifically, I am setting up a music server on my home network, using one of my routers. This can be done with USB flash drives, but an SSD is much more convenient and possibly slightly cheaper (if you have a SATA USB connector already, as I do). The 240GB model is about right for me and, importantly, has a very low standby power requirement. The limitations of TLC NAND technology (speed, endurance) happen to be irrelevant to my specific use, since there is very little writing being done and read speeds are limited by other factors.

For use inside a computer, and especially gaming, I would shell out a bit more for an MX drive, or possibly even a lot more for enterprise-class (e.g. Samsung 960 Pro – although I did once have a 940 Pro fail suddenly on me!). As I discovered decades ago, data matters, so, as with the stock market, I wouldn’t risk anything I couldn’t afford to lose on this drive class, from any manufacturer. Of course, value for money at this point is unbeatable, so it’s horses for courses.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our Usersi fitted this SSD to my desktop PC so i could replace my existing hard drive with my windows operating system on, and found it quite easy. just use an adaptor bracket so it fits into a 3.5″ bay, power up the PC, use windows or another package to initialise, and format the SSD. Then download the cloning software from Crucials website, run and follow the simple instructions. easy.
word of advice though – if you clone your hard drive with your operating system on it, when finished you will be asked to power down the PC, and fit the new SSD in the place of your exisitng hard drive. i left my exisitng hard drive in the PC, but just swapped over the sata cables between SSD and hard drive (and removed the power cable at back of old drive), then powered up. boot time is a lot quicker and the new SSD is now recognised and labelled as my C: drive. perfect. i can now remove the old drive and keep it as a back up.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought this to install in a 17″ Toshiba lap-top I have had for a while. I don’t use it enough to warrant buying a new lap-top, but was staring to notice how slow it was compared to the desktop. I bought this SSD and another memory card in the hope of gaining system improvement without spending the earth. Biggest problem was with cloning the existing drive. I already own O&O disk image but found the interface to confusing, I tried the version of Acronis that was available with the purchase but after it had completed and I had installed the SSD, the computer booted okay but windows just kept saying it had found new hardware and was installing the necessary drivers over and over again. In the end I downloaded Easeus todo and tried again. This time booted fine and there is a noticeable improvement in start-up and general performance. So all in all worthwhile the investment.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve been told ssd was the way to speed up my computer but I had no idea how much of a difference it would make. I’ve just got the operating system and big programmes installed on it and my photos/documents are on a standard hard drive. Switching my data to the ssd was easy, crucial give you a program that does it. Installing it into my pc I had to buy another cradle that came with the wire and everything else I needed. Very happy with this purchase, now looking for a larger one for my laptop.

Edit: bought another for my laptop, it was taking over 18 minutes to start up and be usable. The disc usage was 100% for the entire 18 minutes. With the new drive 4 minutes, it’s now my processer that 100% and that’s the way it should be. This time I added a 1tb ssd, it took about 6 hours to copy the files.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI mainly buy SSDs to upgrade and transform relatively old (anything up to 10 years old) Windows 7 PCs. I’ve put the BX500 in several systems and it works fine – no different to any other SSD since the SATA-II disk controller is usually the limiting factor. However one of these wouldn’t work in an eMachines (an Acer brand) EL1850 with an Intel G41 chipset – POSTed but no sign of the SSD. Almost certainly a firmware problem (it had the latest) because I bought another BX500 and that didn’t work either, but a SanDisk SSD was fine. The same motherboard wouldn’t accept any CPU upgrade beyond an E8300 either, e.g. Q8300 should have been fine, so probably rubbish firmware rather than Crucial’s fault. I reused the BX500s in other builds without problems, so this is just a heads-up in case you’ve got an EL1850 (or any other eMachines – they’re amongst the cheapest, nastiest out there!).

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLike many others I purchased a Crucial SSD to help revive and repurpose an old 32 bit netbook. With a memory upgrade and the Crucial BX500 in place, it is definitely faster and the computer can now support Windows 10. However it’s not a miracle cure and even with the new SSD, my 2011 vintage netbook will never set the computing world on fire.

This was my first experience changing out a hard drive to an SSD. It proved quite a struggle to successfully clone the hard drive. It was only after going through several other possibilities that I eventually hit on the problem of an inadequate cloning cable. When I purchased a better cable, the problem was resolved and cloning was successful. The SSD itself was not at fault. If I ever do this again, it will be so much easier…
