About us
James Galt & Co. Ltd. has been established for over 180 years. James Galt himself was born at Stewarton in Ayrshire and set up as an educational stockist in Manchester in 1836.
In the 1850s the company expanded into printing and publishing and in 1957 the company moved from Manchester to Cheadle in Cheshire. In 1961 the Galt Toys division was formed.
Galt produces and sells quality toys which meet the needs of all stages of child development from 0-10 years.

Hand-to-eye coordinatio
Like the different coloured reels and the size of the reels. I dislike the thickness of the cord provided to thread the reels together. It’s too thick. I replaced it with a coloured bootlace for my granddaughter to use.
Items well made and easy for little hands
The cording needs to be a little more firm as it separates easily and little hands are unable to thread the bobbins and pull through the very soft cord. Frustrated child

Reels for threading
I have 3 little granddaughters and I bought these for them for Christmas they all love them they are just right for little hands and they find them easy to use I would recommend them
Bright and colourful and great for childrens learning.
The cotton Reels arrived super quick and were very well packaged. Bright and colourful cotton reels, the only snag being was the rope ‘ends’ could be a little longer for small fingers to push through and retrieve the other end.
Bought as present for 10 month old. Immediately noticed the plastic is of a lighter weight than it used to be and the threading lace is not cotton any more but is of a thicker softer synthetic substitute that only just goes through the reels if you twist it a bit. though baby is able to pinch the end and pull it through if I do the first bit. On the plus side, the reels tend to stay in place on the lace, and can be slid off fairly easily.
Baby really enjoys playing with them (under supervision of course due to the threading lace), and it’s a flexible toy – the reels can be sorted by colour, rolled about, thrown into a basket, threaded to make a ‘snake’, piled into towers of two or three reels. Older children could thread them in colour patterns, press into playdough or print with them in paint.
Must-have product for child developme
I brought this product to help our son with his development. Using the bobbins to thread or build towers with helps him with his fine motor skills. We also practice mental acquity with having him copy us when laying out patterns of bobbins.
He really enjoys using this product, and he was really excited to get them out of the box. This is definitely a must have for child development.
rope a bit thick
The rope was a bit thick and unwravelling a little even i found it difficult to pull the rope through the reels when my little girl wanted help, i had to twist the rope in one direction and pull it fairly hard. Found some ribbon instead though.
Great for leaving
Great for motor skills and hand eye coordination the string is to thick so I had to buy a skinny circular shoe lace, my daughter age 2 loves threading and stacking the cotton reels
Good but the rope doesn’t thread through easily.
Good toy and value, but because the rope is so thick and platted the play loosens and it doesn’t easily thread through. I’ve had to use our own shoe laces and strings for it, which work much better.
My toddler absolutely loved this toy and it seemed durable and versatile, HOWEVER I would be cautious with the string because it was long and could be a strangulation hazard. I actually removed it and he is happy just stacking them. We put them on the string only together under supervision. This limits the use of the toy so I would consider this before buying although otherwise a good product.
Good produc
The toy is very good quality, solid plastic and a well made lace. In addition to lacing, the reels can be used for colour sorting, stacking, making stamps on play dough and all sorts of other activities. I bought this for a 18 months old, he doesn’t have any issue with putting the lace in one end of the eel, but because it is a bit long, he doesn’t understand yet that he has to push a little further so the lace comes on the other side. I’d say that for a young child, you might want to find a lacing toy with smaller beads. I’m still glad I bought this as it has a lot of potential for future use.
The cotton reels themselves are fantastic! I use them with a home made ‘posting tin’ with kids aged from 1 – 4. In case anyone’s interested, you get one of those ‘sharing’ tubs that you get snacks (Twiglets, cheese footballs etc) in at Christmas, trace round one of the ends of the cotton reels in the middle of the lid, cut out the circle shape and show the children how to post the reels in. Literally hours of entertainment! However, for some reason they’ve changed the thread that comes in the box, specifically the plastic coated end, making it much smaller and harder to manage which is a shame. the first set I bought the thread was great!
This is such a simple idea but so much fun can be had. i bought it for my 2 year old son, and I think that it is a great toy for children from about 1 to 4 years old (I think by 5 they will have got all they can out of it). My son isn’t so interested in sorting and stacking, although he does do it a little. When I gave it to him a few days ago he couldn’t thread yet – but he has learnt how to in no time, and has also learnt ‘through the middle’and ‘pull it through’- which are completely new concepts to him. So within a few days he has made a dramatic step forward in terms of manual dexterity, and learnt some new words/concepts. Great. He doesn’t want to play with it all the time – but it is something that I can resort to on a rainy day.
I bought it because of the rave reviews and the price, and i am very happy – good simple fun. I wish more toys were like this.
It would be good if there was another thread supplied, but one is ok.
