Squirrel proof!
Robustly build, very easy for small birds to get into, but -so far- impenetrable by squirrels!
The lid is very firm, so I doubt they’ll have the strength to unscrew it as I’ve heard done with some feeders.
Only downside is that Woodpeckers cannot get in!
While I do admire the athletic ability and determination of Starlings, I did quickly get fed up of all the mealworms being scoffed by the mob within 10 minutes.
I tried several other (cheaper) ‘small bird feeders’, but these were more of a deterrent to robins and sparrows than the starlings.
This feeder has however kept the starlings at bay, while the small birds happily hop in to feed.
I have this hanging away from external perches, so too awkward for pigeons reach through. As far as I can tell they haven’t even bothered to try.
The starlings however have been trying quite hard to get into this for two weeks now without success. My Dad has also just bought one for his Garden, and as I write this is being entertained by his local mob of starlings trying to get at the fat pellets, although after less than 24hours has apparently already seen a sparrow using his.
it's made in China unfortunately
This is a good robust feeder – I hope the inner tube lasts as long as the outer as they tend to fall apart after a certain amount of time. I’ve tried buying the cheaper ones and they don’t last long at all so I’d rather pay a bit more for one that’s robust like this. I just wish wish they weren’t made in China!
It’s 100% Little Birds Feeding Time
Was a little unsure to start with, it took a couple of days before the little birds started to enter & eat, now plenty little birds visit. So far bigger birds & squirrels are not able to get to the feede
Very good quality
I thought twice about ordering this item because of the relatively high price..but I have to say this item is worth it and MUCH better quality that other similar items at lower cost.
Highly recommended
Stops the Pigeons and is good and sturdy
I purchased this to stop pigeons decimating the food I was putting out. This model looked good because it has a wider caged area, thus making it harder for the pigeons to cling on and get to the internal feeder by shoving their heads through the cage.
It works a treat. After a few days of determined effort by the pigeons they have given up. The smaller birds took some time to get used to it, but are now returning. The lack of bothersome pigeons likely being a factor.
It is well built and sturdy, but not heavy. Easy to fill but with the sort of cap that the critters can not open by themselves.
Very pleased.
Squirrel Proof !!!!
We’ve tried so many different feeders and hanging positions to keep the squirrels away and nothing worked until this fabulous device. It has a wider gap between the outer grid and the inner fat ball holding cylinder, so the squirrels can hang on the outside (see video) but can’t reach in to get the fat balls. After a few days of impressive squirrel experiments they gave up and now don’t even bother trying. This feeder is great for smaller birds but bigger birds (starlings, blackbirds) struggle – they do hoover up fat ball crumbs off the ground though. Highly recommended.
The squirrels are going hungry
OK, so this product is genuinely squirrel-proof. The squirrels are too big to get through the outer cage and they haven’t even tried to chew their way through the thick cage bars. One squirrel tried to get the lid off to get to the seeds but that failed too because the lid has retaining flanges that work. The squirrels no longer make any attempts. (Worry not – they don’t starve.)
Why not five stars? Well, the whole device is not well constructed and on a number of occasions when I have taken the feeder down from the tree to refill it with seeds, it has completely fallen apart, with the central seed cylinder separating from the outer cage spilling any remaining seeds all over the place and requiring the feeder to be rebuilt which is a bit fiddly. One simple assembly weld would have stopped this from being an issue, but, hey if you like simply meccano-type puzzles putting the whole thing back together is very easy.
I’m very pleased to have finally bought a feeder that the squirrels can’t chew and destroy to get to the seeds, which has been my experience with every other past supposedly squirrel-proof bird feeder. This one really is squirrel-proof for the long term!
Brilliant, worth the money
I haven’t seen one squirrel on the “Squirrel Buster 3000”! Seen plenty of lovely little birds though, took them an hour or so to work it and now it’s the busiest feeling station. I’ll be buying more!
It wasn’t squirrels eating the sunflower hearts but crows & I definitely wasn’t interested in feeding them! The caged feeders are wonderful. The little birds had no trouble accessing the food supply & the crows gave up the challenge!
The mesh is small enough to be proof against at least adult starlings. It isn’t squirrel proof as supplied, despite the claim on the page: the top goes on with a bayonet fitting and squirrels can rattle it off. I have made mine genuinely secure with a strong wire clip over the top which takes more than a squirrel’s strength to undo. However, it is not parakeet proof, as they have surprisingly long thin necks and can reach in. A genuinely parakeet proof feeder would need to be 4″ wider. A parakeet managed to wrench off one of the feeding ports, just once and it hasn’t happened again. This feeder can’t be dismantled for cleaning, which is annoying. It’s a bit roughly made too, and the central tube doesn’t align with the cage. But all in all, it does the job better than most and is not unduly expensive.
It took about one month before the birds would trust me that this wasn’t a trap for them. The robin sat on the outer cage but that was it. Now the tits are swarming inside it. Has stopped the juvenile starlings which decimated the suet balls in a couple if sittings. It is a good idea and will take time before the birds catch on how to use it and get past their instincts that this could be a cleverly designed trap.
When its hanging it seems fine, the pigeons haven’t (yet anyway) managed to break it, but when refilling the main lid needs a better securing mechanism.
The inner lid has a roughly Z shaped slot into which the bars slot which works really well.
The outer lid, which holds the feed tube in place, only has an L shaped slot so it turns very easily when you are putting the inner lid back on.
It’s not horrendous but it could certainly do with improving as its a pain.
Good for small birds
It’s good for small wild birds and prevents lager birds getting in and spelling all the bird food. It’s a bit small as it needs frequent filling. Easy to hang on trees and fill bored food.
This large heavy duty bird feeder, is the second one we bought, to satisfy our very hungry sparrows and tits. We bought them to deter the starlings. This worked initially, until the juveniles came along. The adult starlings have difficulty squeezing through the cage holes. However, the juveniles are able to tightly squeeze their bodies, which enables them to get to the bird food. To help prevent this, we are now using gardening wire to make the holes smaller, but big enough for the small birds to pass through without restriction. Despite having to adjust the holes, we would still recommend this large heavy duty bird feeder, to deter starlings, magpies and squirrels.
Keeps squirrels and large birds ou
The local birds took a while to get the idea that they had to squeeze through the outer cage to get at the food after being used to the previous simple tube type but now love it.
The only negative and reason for four stars is that the lid is hard to get off and on. It is held in place by slots in the lid which engage with pins in the body, but the lid is badly formed and jams rather then fitting easily. I don’t know if this is just a one-off or a general production issue.
Maybe not for sparrows
We bought this not to deter squirrels but to stop the starlings. The feeder has been in place for 10 days now. No greedy starlings but the sparrows won’t go near it. The robin goes in and out quite easily and I think the blue tits do as well. Shame as we get a lot of sparrows in our garden. It is strong and sturdy although a little tricky to open the top to replace the fatballs, not that we have had to do that yet if we can’t attract the sparrows. We did hang it in exactly the same place as our old feeder.
Does the job - with a minor tweak
I thought birds would be a bit wary of this caged feeder but actually they took to it within 24 hours of hanging it up, flying in and out as if it had always been there. I was also concerned about comments on here about the lid coming off too easily, which it does, it’s a very poor design – BUT – it’s an incredibly simple fix, looping a bit of garden wire around the lid handle then tying both ends of the wire to the cage bars keeps the lid on securely. Our five resident squirrels have had a really good go at this feeder and failed miserably, (we do feed them separately) even though they have completely destroyed some other ‘squirrel proof’ feeders. If it weren’t for the minor problem with the lid, which is easily fixed, this would be a perfect product.
