Reliable mowe I donated this to my local primary school and they’ve made great use of it. There’s a quarter of an acre of grass, which took just under two hours to mow. It folds up for easy storage afterwards.
Little assembly required What a cracking machine, easy to put together just two bolts to fix the handlebar, add the engine oil (not supplied), fuel up, no air pump to press, and started on the second pull. It’s a smooth drive even without the self-forward mode. very large grass box, clean cut.
Reasonable quality petrol mowe I purchased the 500x Gen 2 at the beginning for the year. Delivery was fast and right to the garage door – very heavy box!
Instructions for this lawnmower are dreadful. Several instruction books are included which have difficult to understand diagrams and hardly any text. It took me nearly 2 hours to get this built and up and running – a lot of guess work required. Still not clear on some aspects of maintenance as simply not shown anywhere. This is my first petrol mower so if you are a more seasoned owner set up may be simpler. Also looked around for spare parts – have to go through a third party whose website is pretty poor – makes me a bit nervous about ongoing maintenance.
Once filled with oil and petrol I set off for the first cut. It does a reasonable job, but the powered wheels do move quite quickly and the speed can’t be adjusted so you have to work at the speed of the lawnmower. It’s quite heavy to manoeuvre once the drive wheels are disengaged – but I guess this is true of most petrol mowers.
I find that it doesn’t cut to the edge of the wheels so have had to learn to cut slightly over the last pass to get an even surface. It doesn’t really do stripes which is a shame.
Our front garden is quite lumpy and this put quite a strain on the handle resulting in the plastic insert on the green plastic handle joints disintegrating. The handle is actually more robust without the inserts so not a disaster.
The engine starts pretty well, and can handle some fairly tall grass without stalling. The grass collection box is pretty sizeable which means fewer trips to the compost heap. Being able to use the hose fitting to wash out the underside is an added bonus. Comes with lots of accessories for mulching etc. which is useful.
I would cautiously recommend this lawnmower. If you have a fairly flat lawn with few tricky areas to manoeuvre around then I think this would suit well. I’m not sure how long this will really last, it doesn’t feel as robust as my old Bosch electric mower which was considerably cheaper.
Clogs up Bought this summer 2022 as my old one had finally given up the ghost after 8 years. It’s a great machine except for 1 flaw which stops it getting a full 5 stars and that is the grass collection clogs easily, I have a fairly large lawn and find it a pain to have to stop every couple of rows to unclog and restart. Also the first cut each spring I do without the collection box and I have to wedge the back flap ajar because otherwise it just allows the cuttings to build up and not blow out the back unless it’s wedged open.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very good I have uses this mower a couple of times now and find it easy to push around and easy to start. The cutting heights work well
Feels like it’s really well made. The pictures make it look a bit blingy and the price made me think it might not be all that great, but the reviews told a good story, so I went for it.
Very pleased I did. It’s not exactly bombproof and the instructions won’t help, if you’ve never done anything like this before, but it’s every bit as good as my last mower. Whether it will stand up to the same amount of abuse, only time will tell.
A great purchase A great powerful mower at a great price as well plus quick delivery! – Only thing I would change is by having a polycarbonate or plastic deck as the metal ones do rust after getting scratched which they always do
Early days but initial impressions favourable Used this mower four or five times since needing an urgent replacement for my 13 year old mower.
On the debit side.
1. It doesn’t seem to be a good cold starter needing at least half a dozen pulls, although now the warmer weather has arrived two or three pulls will suffice.
2. There seems to be a design fault on the cutting levels. For most ordinary lawn use only levels 1&2 will ever be used with level 1 being equivalent to level 3 on most of the other mowers I have used. It might be a personal preference but I would have preferred a shorter option than level 1, which will not suit those with flat ‘bowling green’ type lawns, and greater versatility from levels 2&3. 4 and above will obviously only be used for much longer grass.
3. Disappointing that the height adjustment needs to be done both front and rear. It is thirty years or more since I had a mower needing anything more than single leaver adjustment which is much more convenient.
Beyond those three criticisms the mower seems to be well built, has a (usually) reliable B&S engine, restarts first time during use, collects grass particularly well, has a decent bag capacity, is relatively light and manoeuvrable and provides a neat and tidy cut.
Good mowe I had to replace my 20 year old mower. Some mixed reviews about this one [EQ400], but it fitted what I needed and it’s a good price.
Out of the box the books look daunting; however these are mostly irrelevant and cover around 30 languages. A small piece of paper tells you all you need to know.
Very easy to put together: fold out the handle into position and attach 4 bolts. Attach the throttle cable. Attach the eye and run the pull-start cable through it. Put in about .5L of oil and some petrol.
Primed it [plenty of pushes to tart with] and it started first time. No need for pulling at it like it’s an Olympic event, a gentle pull did it. Much quieter than my old one – so much so I didn’t realise it was running to start with. Very light and easy to push around. Cuts close enough for my taste [short].
My only issue is the fabric bag; not a fan. Much rather than a plastic box that can be easily cleaned.
An excellent lawnmower perfect for a mid-sized garde The assembly instructions were simple and clear with a small number of steps, and despite this being my first petrol lawnmower, I had it assembled in about 20 minutes. Getting up and running cutting grass took a little longer because I had to “research” how much oil the engine should take due to fear of over-filling it and the very small margin of error that the dip-stick indicates. It’s about 440ml for this model.
Starting the engine first time and subsequently is easy – the pull-cord mechanism works perfectly.
The mower is relatively light and easy to manoeuvre, with a noise level that is acceptable for the user.
The grass collector is perfectly adequate in terms of its capacity – obviously this depends on the grass length and acreage of the lawn that is being mowed. The six options for grass cut length are easy to set with my only (very slight) niggle with the mower being that the lowest setting could do with being a little bit more “severe” in terms of cutting the grass VERY short. This is probably very much a personal preference of mine that goes against all best-practice guidance for lawn maintenance.
Overall a quality, well-constructed and effective mower with simple assembly and operation.
A great piece of kit. This is a really nice lawn mower at a great price. The instructions could be a bit clearer but if that’s the only problem it can’t be that bad can it.
No Spares supplier or local Murray distributo The mower was easy to put together. Once oil and petrol put in it starts very easily. The engine is much smoother than my previous Qualcast lawn mower. Even though that was also Briggs and Stratton engine. Only downside is that when searching for a contact number for a Murray local dealer for spares or an address in the event of an issue arising. I cannot find one. Otherwise the product is great.
Reasonable mower for the money. The first mower that arrived had a handle fitted incorrectly (back to front) Returned and replaced by Amazon with no great problem. The mower is a lot easier to assemble if you watch the Murray website video, I found the multi-language instructional illustration sheet pretty confusing. The instruction manual provided doesn’t cover assembly. The mower worked fine but I agree with earlier comments that the cut settings are too high. I cannot imagine ever having to use 3-6. You would possibly use setting 2 for the first cut of the year and setting 1 is a fraction to high.
EQ400 rocks Assembly is a doddle, insert 2 screws for the handle, tighten 2 other screws. Attach the grass catching box. Add petrol, add oil and crank her up! We were up and mowing in under 5 minutes. This is our 1st petrol mower and colour us impressed. There are 2 levers to set cutting hight and we had a play at adjusting them until we had it perfect. The 1st cut with this lawnmower is far superior to our flyMo. My wife wants a sit on lawnmower next. Nice looking machine, good size collection box and very good results.
Nice product but arrived slightly damaged So far I have put the mower together and used it twice. There was a useful video to help me put it together and it was fairly easy. It started first time and so far I like it.
Unfortunately, the front wheel was a bit bent when it arrived. There is a metal plate that attaches the wheel to the body and holds the wheel straight but this one is bent. So the wheel looks bent inwards top to bottom but it functions ok. I wrote to the manufacturer and they said I should send it back but I had already put oil and petrol in and I think I will be able to straighten it. It isn’t cheap so I am a bit disappointed it arrived like this.
Good quality product. Cuts grass well. Very good VFM Arrived within 2 days. Unboxing was easy but a 2 person job due to the weight. Assembly instructions were awful but the online video is excellent. Build quality is good. Remarkably, the engine started with the very first pull of the rope. Cuts very well, leaving a good, tidy finish. Cuttings collection box is big and well made. Six height options but I would have liked the shortest option to provied a shorter cut, but that’s a minor point. Overall, a good choice for the money.
