It’s too early to say how long it will last, but so far it looks well-constructed, both in terms of the varnished handle and the stainless blade. In use it’s a perfect weight for gardening in borders or the vegetable patch.

I struggled to find a lightweight spade after breaking the one I’d had for years. This is an ideal replacement albeit I thought a bit expensive. I went in B&Q a while after and picked up a suitable one for half the price which was just as good

Always tended to buy Spear and Jackson tools from when they were made is Sheffield. This is probably made in China but the quality seems good. Good sturdy handle. Feels comfortable to use. Should last a lifetime.

I bought this as replacement for my old one, and was worried because it is so much cheaper than the same product in any local garden centres. Shouldn’t have worried, it is exactly the same, just better value. Homebase have it even cheaper at the moment btw.
Excellent ladies spade for planting work. I’m a garden designer and my old one deserved to be retired, it had taken years of tough punishment. And it looks so nice. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a solid bladed spade. The face is relatively small, but ideal for gardening tasks.

The top of the blade has a fold which has a grip so it is easy to get a good press into the ground.

I used it to take up some turf and it could cut through nicely. Digging holes, it was small enough that a shovel-liad was not back-breakingly heavy.

So about as enthusiastic as I could be over a spade 😉

Ordered through Amazon. My husband is delighted with every aspect of this spade. Just the handy type he wanted to use in preference to his normal width spade. Great quality great price and great service from the company. All good thanks.

I wasn’t sure of this product as the ratings on Amazon weren’t promising but took a risk and brought it.
The product is good and the hickory wood Handle complements its finish. Its got substance with style. We haven’t had any problems I could mention. Only time will tell how sturdy this item is for its price.

Hard to get excited about a spade. But this one is a beauty. It’s very light, very strong and can dig a good hole. It edges really well and can take a good pounding with little vibration on the hands. What a cracking spade.

If i have a concern it may be a bit narrow for some jobs. But sharp enough to get trough most dirt.

Spear and Jackson make unbelievable spades, I’ve just used one as a pick and a spade to move 35tonnes of earth from my garden, it still looks brand new! Unbreakable, very comfortable handle and handy ridge to press down on. Love it!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersEarlier this week, I bought a bargain spade, and hadn’t bargained for it being unsuitable for digging! – So I bought this one in its place, and gave the jelly-spade to a neighbour.

This spade is brilliant. It has a small head, turned over at the top to give your boot better purchase. – And it really will lever out even wet clay-filled soil.

It still leaves me breathless after a few minutes however, but that’s down to my fitness rather than the spade’s fitness for the job.

Great spade – 10 year guarantee. Sturdy and seems strong. However, the edges where your foot goes either side of the shaft are extremely sharp, the corners have not been rounded and have been left very very sharp! Beware!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI am pleased with this spade, bought to replace an old one which mysteriously vanished. I have not used it yet due to inclement weather, but glad to have it ready for when needed. the blade looks excellent and the whole thing feels light enough for a senior citizen. The product was well packed and delivered promptly.

Have received the BORDER SPADE—–unfortunately it is too big–not a LADIES SPADE, I will have to return the spade. A Ladies Spade has a shorter shaft . I am only small.. I will have to reorder a shorter spade.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI needed a small spade and looked at all the different garden tool producers and couldn’t decide which one to pick. Some of the manufacturers products looked very appealing (But would they last?)
In the end I took the easy option and selected good old Spear and Jackson (The tools to trust).
Wow I am so glad I did. This is better than it looks and very sturdy, with an additional rivet placed through the metal to wood shaft attachment.
I believe for the money this has got to be the strongest, best looking and most practical small spade out there.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis has to be one of my best buys…I had shopped around for a while to find the one best for me…After reading the reviews I decided to go ahead and purchase one…It has not disappointed me, not only does it look good, it makes light work of edging my borders…It is not heavy and I found it enjoyable to use…It is very sturdy and when using you just know that its not going to break (as other cheaper models will)…I would recommend this to anyone and its well worth paying just that little bit more for something that will last you for years….

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersThis polished-steel wooden-handled border spade (bought direct from AMAZON.CO.UK and not a Third Party) is stunning; perfectly balanced, sturdy construction and piece of art (I hope I can actually bring myself to use it and to get it dirty/scratched/dented).

The D-handle format is pinned strongly to guarantee (10 year’s from S&J) a long life, and the dimensions of the spade’s metal section is job-specific. Overall, it’s not too large or too heavy; just right. Don’t forget that this is not a “digging or shovelling spade” but a precision tool.

In the last five years we have destroyed two other border spades (plastic handled and a “Hammerite finished” metal section) – snapping at the junction of the plastic/metal – both costing about 8.00 from a high street DIY chain, so we thought we’d spend a bit more (19.97) for a quality product that would last (and have that manufacture’s guarantee – which we hope they will oblige if things go wrong.).

SPEAR AND JACKSON recommend that buyers should treat the handle/shaft with linseed oil (used on Cricket Bats) to “feed” the wood to keep it in tip-top condition.

    Happy gardening in 2012.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a very ‘tasteful’ little garden spade, well made and good to look at. It is light to handle but still seems to be reasonably sturdy though I have not yet applied it to the heavy clay section of my garden. The blade is much smaller than my previous spades so it does not easily lift the same quantity of soil. However I do not find this to be a problem – probably means I am less likely to do my back in by trying to lift too much heavy wet earth. So far so good.
