Used this on my side gate which had badly swollen after the wet weather – I was really impressed with this tool. I was using this for about an hour on the gate and it did a superb job – great buy and great value ! Superb !

The doors on my shed have swollen with the damp winter months and no longer closed so I purchased this plane to remove a small amount of wood along the edge. It took less than 5 minutes to plane the length of the door which now has a neat gap and close perfectly. Great value and easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and did the job quickly

For trimming down the edges of plasterboard, this little gadget is a lifesaver! It makes shaving of the smallest amounts easy and if you need to remove a cm or 2, it will do the job if you have a little patience!
I’d recommend this to anyone thinking of doing a project involving cutting plasterboard!

My sister has been learning to upcycle furniture & needed some small tools she could use quickly & easily to adapt shapes of wood & chairs etc (all smaller jobs).
I bought this as I knew she had been trying to saw down tiny bits of wood, & she has been delighted with how this plane has worked.
She says it is light, easy to move & plane, & works well

Ok, it did the job. Just. But if it were any smaller I’d have had get my little girl to do the job for me. The one this replaced was considerably longer and more robust than this is.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve been using Stanley surform tools for more than 40 years. I’m an experienced woodworker but I still find traditional planes a faff to use, maintain and sharpen. With Surform: – grab it, use it, drop it, stand on it, abuse it and it’s like ‘is that all you’ve got?’ Overerall, Stanley tools are underrated nowadays.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersMy Craft Cave door has been sticking for years, and I couldn’t afford a tradesman to sort it. I also cannot take it off its hinges and replace it by myself (70 year old woman with arthritic hands and knees), so that I could use a plane on it.
So when I saw this wee piece of kit (together with the small curved one as a bundle), I thought I would try it.
I am so pleased I did! It smoothly removed enough at all the sticking points up and down the door within minutes. Even my arthritic hands were able to comfortably hold it and put enough pressure to get the job done. The small Stanley 367023-STX Surform Shaver Tool 5 21 115 was ideal for the very bottom of the door, going sideways, as the block plane was a bit awkward to use down there.

I turned the blade of the block plane round so that I was pulling instead of pushing, which I found easier and gave me more control.

Now I can get in and out of my Craft Cave without having to kick the door!!!!

Next job is to tackle the garden gate – I have no doubt that too will open with ease after a few minutes.

As others have mentioned, it’s basically a cheese grater. I only used it for about 30 seconds, on top of a door, and gave up as it barely did anything. The only positive I can think of is at least it didn’t cost much money.

It’s not the most sturdy of tools, but then it only cost a few quid It’s moulded plastic with a rasp on the bottom.
It’s ok for removing small amounts of wood from doors and gates bit I wouldn’t want to use it on larger jobs best to pay more and get a larger, more solid tool.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersPros:- Light; Good for shaving off small amounts of wood
Cons:- Pretty hard work – you have to press quite hard and keep it clean. Good for edges – for instance if you are trimming a door to stop it sticking I found it best to angle trim the edge first and then move across the surface reducing the angle as you go. It would be – and is – hard work to traverse the whole door edge unless the wood is soft. It doesn’t work so well if you are trying just to take some measure of wood off a flat surface.

Nevertheless it did what I needed and I got two previously jammed doors to close properly so it was definitely worth buying in my case.

Very small and light plane which can be used one handed on awkward surfaces and angles. I used it to take a couple of millimetres off the edge of a loft hatch and it works perfectly leaving a surface that didn’t even need to be sanded. It’s built cheaply but that’s reflected in the price and is necessary to keep the weight down.

The planing surface is like a cheese grater and can be reversed depending on which direction you want to plane.

I used this planer to shorten a wardrobe door by a few millimetres as it was continuously scraping against the bottom. The planer worked well, however was slightly time consuming, but this is as you’d expect with a hand-planer. Overall I spent around 15 minutes to shave off around 2-3mm of material, and as others state, it’s advised you remember to empty the planer of the wood shavings.

Would recommend this for simple DIY purposes, however, nothing more than that.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have a funny story about this gadget.

I had 4 doors I needed to shave the bottom off of. I didn't want to spend too much so I decided to get this instead of a powered planer. I ordered this and basically got laughed at because I was told by a “experienced” DIY person it was inadequate. This person arranged for another guy with an electric planer to turn up on the day I was doing my doors. Taking the first door and getting it ready for the guy with the electric planer he began cutting the edge off. Whoops! He managed to suck up the cloth the door was resting on… it was lodged inside so badly. After a lot of cussing and the old, “this has never happened to me in 40 years..”, he began taking his planer apart.
After 15minutes. Rather then wait for him I got this little Stanley Block Plane out and began using it. One done, Two done. So easy to use I had 4 done and hung in the next 30 minutes whilst the guy was still using long nose plyers to get all the cloth out.

Moral of the story. Sometimes you just have to trust your own instinct.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersI bought this to trim the bottom of a door that wouldn’t close fully due to the threshold strip.
The plane, as others have mentioned, is not your typical plane as it is more like a cheese grater. The ‘grater’ can be removed and repositioned (ie turned around) depending on what feels comfortable for you when you are planing.
The plane is fairly small, less than 20cm and is the width of a standard door frame. It’s a little uncomfortable to hold when in use. It took around 10 mins to plane the bottom of the door by 2mm.

I would recommend this plane if you have a small job and fairly simple job, but if you likely to use a plane more regularly, I would recommend going for a sturdy plane, that has a blade as opposed to a ‘grater’ (20+)
