Honeywell 1102 Fire and Waterproof Chest

Honeywell Waterproof Fire Chests.

Honeywell Waterproof Fire Chests

Features and Benefits:

  • 30 minute UL 350 Fire rating up to 843C.
  • Waterproof for 24 hours to 1 metre depth.
  • Two compression latches for added water protection.
  • Protects paper documents and digital media.

Dual Compression Latches

A common feature with the Honeywell range of fire and waterproof chests is the dual compression latches on either side of the chest. These are UL rated waterproof for a minimum of 24 hours of submersion in water up to 1 metre deep (rising to 48 hours for the model 1108).

Together with the waterproof seal, it make it the ideal place to store any important personal documentation and digital media that needs to be kept dry.

The fact that the chest is also made of sturdy ABS plastic means that in the event of a flood, if the chest is stored flat it will actually float, and hence the waterproof seal will not even come into contact with water, unless the room it is stored in becomes totally submerged.

Key Lock Security

For security these chests utilise a key lock system. Two keys are provided for your convenience.

Please note however that the real function of a waterproof and fireproof chest is to secure your important legal documents which would be hard to replace in the event of a fire or flood for instance insurance certificates, wills, birth certificates or the deeds to your house. The very documents you would need following a fire or a flood!

In short these are items that are of high personal value to you, but which are worthless to a burglar.

In fact the Honeywell Fire Chest is not recommended for the storage of jewellery and high value items which you want to secure from theft, due to the very portability of the chest, and the fact that the key lock would not deter a determined criminal for long.

Convenient carry handle

The smaller chests in the Honeywell range (models 1102, 1103 and 1104) all have a convenient carry handle making them portable. These model are sized to fit under a bed.

The other two models (the 1106 and 1108) are considerably larger and fully laden can be very heavy and hence do not feature this carry handle.

Instead, they can be ordered with a specially designed wheel cart to make them portable (the 1106C and the 1108C respectively).

UL Fire Rating

All of the Honeywell Fire Chests have a minimum UL class 350 fire rating of 30 minutes at a temperature of up to 843° C (for the 1104 and 1108 this goes up to a UL 350 1 hour fire rating in a fire of up to 927° C).

As paper only ignites at a much higher temperature, this means that your important legal documents and digital media will be safe inside the chest.

In the event of a serious fire however the exterior of the chest may be damaged but the fireproof insulation will still protect the items inside.

Very solid, heavy and well made.
The lid closes very snugly and there is a soft close mechanism. Locks securely.

There is a little play in the mechanism though.
So it is possible to ‘drop’ the lid on your finger if you have only opened it a little way and it slips.
I know this because I did, and the lid is very heavy, very painful.
Keep it locked and don’t let children operate it.

This fireproof box looks like it would protect my pecious documents but, as to a full review of its effectivenous, you’d have to ask me again if my house burns dow

Good sized fire and waterproof storage. Whilst not a security safe it is very heavy so not easy for somebody to carry off.
Internal size is enough for a reasonable amount of A4 sized documents etc, but the internal width is almost exactly A4 width so wider documents will need to be folded.
    Happy with my purchase.

Without having tested the fireproof or waterproof-ness of this safe I can only comment on the general ease of use. For that, I will say it’s quite heavy (not unexpected), but the key turns easy in the lock, and the latches are easy to open. Inside, it is slightly longer than another Sentry safe we purchased years ago, which is better suited to some items we have.

After looking at lots of different options from Fire Safe Boxes to Fire Safes, I settled on this as a compromise as it had good reviews, including some YouTube videos of people putting it in fire and water. It is well made and quite heavy. Fire and water proof (within limits) which is better than some. My only small gripe is that you can’t lay A4 paper flat in the bottom of it. It comes with some hanging files and you can stand piles of A4 paper on the long edge, but it would have been so much better if you could have laid A4 flat in the bottom. The sides slope slightly and so you could lay A4 flat at the top and to about a third/half of the way down, just not in the bottom. I can fit everything I wanted to in it, so it’s not a show stopper, but it would have been nice if they’d just made it that little bit bigger at the bottom to take A4 flat.

I had some reservations about ordering this chest based on previous comments about the chest not being large enough to accommodate A4 size sheets. However there is plenty of room to put in A4 paperwork (large enough to fit in a pack of A4 copier paper with space around the edges and it’s not a tight fit) so I’m glad I gave it a go. The chest is sturdy, seems well made and it arrived very quickly. Very good value compared to other chests I considered.

Very robust “strong box” and heavier than expected, to be left at home/office. Not a case you can easily carry around, although I’m sure well protected against fire and water.

I was looking for a fire safe to store title deeds & other essential documents.
Thank goodness I checked on the links on earlier reviews.
It would appear that under real life conditions most fire resistant bags are useless.
Please, before you buy a ” fire resistant bag ” check out real life reviews where they subject the bag to a real fire & not just the ones that hold a lighter up to the bag.
I hope that I never need this safe, but I have confidence that in a real fire situation it will protect my documents.

Very good service., Safe does what was expected. I had thought I would store it in the attic but it is too heavy for a middle aged person to lift into the attic. Also it needs to be opened for 30 minutes every month to air it so as the paper contents don’t get damaged, Overall I am very happy with the quality.

I am storing house deeds and important certificates in my safe chest and am very happy with its capacity and solidity. It seems strongly made and does hold A4 documents with no problem. I’ve had it for 4 months and haven’t noticed any problem with mould mentioned in other reviews. Thankfully it hasn’t been tested by fire or water. I don’t lock it as I am protecting against fire and water, not theft. I don’t find opening and closing it a problem.

We bought this to store wills. It’s impressive! Big and heavy though but I think it has to be to do its job. It needs to go in a semi permanent position I would say as you would not want to move it too ofte

Haven’t tested this, but then, how many purchasers have, but it’s very well made, but dear God, is it heavy! I can believe it does all it says on the tin and is impressive. Comes from Germany, where I assume it’s made, and is then simply labelled “Honeywell”. Takes a few days to arrive but much quicker than predicted. So yes, I’d recommend.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought this for my Mum as she has some valuable to store. It is a very solid case. Heavy but with a strong handle and an excellent lock. I had previously purchased a ‘fireproof briefcase safe’ made by a company better known for smoke alarms but it was easy to force the locked handle. This Honeywell is more rugged and the addition of the two latches makes it easier for Mum to close the lid securely before locking it. Not the sort of thing someone would carry for long periods of time, it will likely tear muscle and tendons given the robust shell and weighty protection.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersArrived next day and thankfully I was in to accept it. Packaging was damaged in various places, but chest seems fine. It is also just packaged in it’s box, so everyone will know what you got delivered to you. Seems to fit product specs given. Will have to get a filing system that fits though, as A4 just about fits in, but not a folder or envelope. Came with a packet of silica. Should probably follow the manufacturer’s warning to air it out every week to prevent moisture and mold build up. Overall, very pleased with the information provided on Amazon and the product so far, although I wish they did this size in the higher proofing specs. 40kg of the largest chest would just be too heavy for me to handle. Let’s hope it will never have to be put to the test for its fire- and waterproof qualities.

Delivered on time. This Safe Chest has ample room inside for A4 documents and larger papers. Ideal for storing important and personal paperwork, birth certificates, driving licences etc. It is very heavy and although equipped with handle I wouldn’t want to carry it far. Very pleased with it.

Despite the first one arriving with a crack in the plastic casing, Amazon replaced it with no hassle through the pick up place I received it. The safe it self is very heavy and has ample space for all my important a4 documents. Until my house actually burns down I don’t really know how well it perfoms but given its appearance and weight/ build I would say it would do a pretty good job.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersI need somewhere to put the myriad of legal documents that have no value but are irriplaceable. Be aware that this item is very heavy and you not only need to have a strong, healthy spine to cope with the weight but every move will need to be planned in advance to prevent damage to self and property.

I did a test with storing several unimportant documents for a eight weeks and found that the manufacturer’s warning to be spot-on: the case needs to be opened monthly to prevent trapped-moisture damage to papers. The test proved that three sheets of ink on a4 paper were slightly damaged: they had curled up and the ink handwriting had enlarged as the ink had ran. Test two involves adding a small silica gel bag, that I found inside the box containing my wife’s new leather handbag. If that fails, I’ll put the documents inside resealable clear plastic document wallets before putting them inside the Safe Chest.

Overall, I’m pleased that I’ll have something to protect my documents.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our Usersexcellent (although I haven’t yet tried it out in a fire thank goodness). I was looking for a fire safe to protect important household docs (deeds, etc). This was the only one I found that could fit A4 documents in a folder – with plenty of room. As has been said, it is not a safe – it is a large brief case size with a carry handle. You can walk away with it – but it is extremely heavy so you won’t walk away very quickly.
I had to collect mine from DPD’s local distribution centre. Chap behind counter was not very happy with me – he nearly got a hernia!

Good quality safe. No problems for me on the opening once a week and I also have purchased some more gel bags to put inside.

It is very heavy though so be aware of that fact, but otherwise, a great affordable document safe.

For the price I paid, it’s just what I wanted. I hope I never have to find out it it works!! Yes, the weight of it is an issue but, I made a small all metal trolley to move it around, which cost me 30 for materials and a little time to make it, well worth it.

  21. Anonymous says:

Hasnt been tried in a fire or submerged in water, but it appears to be capable of the job. Extremely sturdy, well made and very heavy. There’s probably enough space inside for a stack of A4 documents about 10cm or so high.

  22. JoanneMcAlpine says:

It’s what I expected and is as described.
Slight niggle is that the slow close lid (essential to avoid trapping your fingers) only works if you fully open the lid first. If you forget to do that the lid slams shut dangerously quickly. Otherwise it seems good.
Of course I don’t know how it all copes with a fire yet, I hope I don’t have to test it!

  23. NanceeStambaugh says:

Very solid construction gives a feeling of confidence that if required it will do the job.
The overall weight could be an issue also care has to be taken when closing the lid as it is very heavy.
Follow the instructions to open the lid fully to allow the slow close cylinders to work.

After much searching, I found this chest for the deeds to our house. The size of the chest, as advertised, is large enough for a big pile of legal papers plus other important documents. Just what I wanted.

It seems to do what it says it does on the tin. Documents (A4) fitted in without issue. Roomy for what I require. Obviously the big test will be when it is used for what it was bought for i.e. fire or flooding.

  26. CorinneF06 says:

This is a very heavy strong box.
It is perfect for storing A4 size documents without bending them.
Thankfully I haven’t had any fires or flooding to test the box but it certainly looks like it will handle anything.
It is a good price compared with other makes of box so I am happy with it and confident it will do it’s job.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBrilliant piece of kit.

Large outside and internally. Lots of space for bits n bobs on top of usual things.

Extremely heavy…almost 25Kg….have seen the You Tube videos and can see that it would protect your documents.

Good service and delivery from the supplier in Germany. Updated all the way from dispatch to doorstep.

Will take Legal Sized documents…which for some peculiar reason are larger than A4 which Normal safes will accomodate.
