This is the second one of these I’ve brought can’t fault them they are really easy to set up with the app nice and small and connected to Alexa straight away now don’t have to get out of bed to turn my lamp of
I first bought the Mini Smart Plug 3 years ago, and have since bought 3 more because they are SO easy to install and SO easy to use via the app or via Alexa. I use them for lamps inside, water features and outside lights as well as for scheduling the charging of my car. I’ve also moved home twice, including one international move, and each time the installation to new networks is a breeze. (even for a 50+ year old with no teenage kids to help). I cannot recommend them enough and the price makes me smile too! 🙂
Always found TP links Kasa plugs to work faultlessly, we have 8 of the larger type and they havent really missed a beat in the last 5 or so years.
Then they started to do ones with the Tapo app and was worried that they light with draw support for the Kasa one, although it seems you can port the Kasa plus into the Tapo app.
Suddenly the Kasa ones became available again so a grabbed another two of the mini ones and they seem to work just as well as the larger style.
This takes our Kasa smart plug count to 10 now, they control (through alexa) loads of stuff, from our uplighters to digital picture frames. Easy to set up and just work and keep working, there has been the odd time when you ask Alexa to turn one on or off and she pauses and says its not responded but on the 2nd atempt it does work, but this is very very rare.
Very simple and easy to use WiFi plug sockets. The Kasa app allows me to control my (now 3 in total) units. You can turn off and on wirelessly, set timers to go on and off and set a schedule. For instance during winter I had 2 set to come on periodically during the night in 2 of the kids bedrooms, where we had some small electric heaters placed to give them a bit more heat during the night. They havent caused me a problem yet. Highly recommended.
This is the third Kasa plug that I have bought and all work very well and are easily controlled via the app. Particularly useful at Christmas time allowing me to easily turn on Christmas tree lights and the like. Much easier that crawling around under the tree to reach the plug to turn them on manually.
Bought these plugs to be able to switch lights on and off when not at home. Wasn’t sure if I would be able to but took a chance and yes I can turn them on or off from miles away as long as they remain connected to WiFi. When out of range of my WiFi it works perfectly using my own data on my phone. Excellent range of timers on the downloaded app or simply turn on or off using same. Would certainly recommend
Use HomeSeer (other home automation systems etc.) for home automation and these can be controlled locally using a (free! – SHOCK!) plugin. I HATE internet requirements and so this fits my use-case and I’m not locked in to some manufacturers ecosphere and left at their whim – with luck. (Matter etc. notwithstanding, it’ll never take off, every time someone tries to make a simple system ALL the big corps come along and poo on it….)
So, I’m using a system that can cope with variety and works with most things, albeit sometimes with some work.
Does what I need and shows the trends I’m interested in. Sadly, you can’t reset the data with a button that I can find. As I understand it, you have to remove the plug from the app and re-add it. A reset button is easy, surely!?
This is my third one and it is used to switch the outside Xmas tree lights. Although it is supposed to be for indoor use only it works fine outside as long as you protect it from the rain. The others are used inside to switch feature lights.
So far so good. Easy to setup. I’ve plugged my kettle into it as it’s 13A. Works as a timer so the kettle is boiling as I’m walking down the stairs in the morning (only works for kettles that stay switched on with the power off). Not blown ye
Great smart plug. Ideal to use purchased three of these and they all work brilliantly on my iPhone. Connect through the TP Link Kasa app and easy to operate couple of minutes to set up and great to be able to control different devices through your phone lights extension lead in lamp, easy to switch on and off three phone
I have now purchased several of these smart plugs to operate lights and other devices in my home. They are very easy to set up through an app on my smart phone. They are small enough to still be able to turn off the mains switch if needed to. Looking forward to using them for the Christmas Tree lights!
Bought this item to have our living room lights on a timer whilst we were on holiday.
I use a TP-Link Deco full mesh Wi-Fi system at home and this linked in perfectly.
I can set timers and control the lights through my existing Deco app, so didnt need to download or install anything else.
I dont use any voice assistants so cant comment how it works through these but works fine via the Deco app manually turning off and on or with a timer and schedule set.
This plug was purchased to control a light in the living room. It was very easy to install and worked with Alexa straight away. I was impressed with how quickly we got it working with our other devices.
I have a few of these now, there are cheaper ones on the market but I haven’t had a single issue with mine, load the App away you go, integration with Alexa simple too
I needed a simple power switch that I could control via Alexa, and this does it very well. Installation did not progress with my iPhone, but it was simple and straightforward with my iPad. Got it all working within minutes. I use a script to turn on for about 30 seconds and then off- the product timer does not seem to support such a use.
Easy to set up using the wizard in the Kasa app and then just shows up in Alexa so you can add it to your automation stuff. Probably the easiest one I have found to set up so far, doesn’t get hot and is a good price if you look around to see what offers are on when you buy.
I tried a couple of different smart lightbulbs, but sadly although the bulbs may be ok the app and connectivity was poor.
The Kasa range have been reliable and easy to set up and connect, mine are colour changing and we love the ability to instantly add a different ambience, great for parties etc.
The Kasa brand seems now to be difficult to source, not sure why this is, would like to buy more but they are now either not available or are at a ridiculous price.
Already had a few of the larger plugs and bought this during a recent offer. Very pleased with it especially the size as it now means I don’t lose the adjacent socket.
Definitely my smart plug of choice – they are nice and small – easy to set up in the Kasa app – REALLY reliable (I have a few set up at my parents house for them, which are all on my account so I can change all the timings remotely for them (without the pain of having to go round and sort manual ones, or explain to my dad how to do it!)
Some great security features like away time. Links up to Alexa easily and they really have been an amazing addition to the smart home functionality.
Definitely recommend!
I bought a couple of generic smart plugs to use with an Alexa device but they were a nightmare to set up and pair with Alexa.
While trying to source more info to get the generic smart plugs to work properly, I came across a review for these TP-Link/Kasa smart plug slim. They reviewed really well so I decided to buy a couple, they were half price, bonus. Set-up on the Kasa app was relatively straight forward and they were up and running quickly. Scheduled on/off times for a couple of lamps to test, and able to control remotely, away from home. Pairing with Alexa was also straight forward.
I was so impressed that I bought another 3 while they were still on offer. I wish I had found these sooner as I wasted so much time with the previous smart plugs.
I would highly recommend these smart plugs.
I had previously used one of these and control it via my phone. I tried another make but could not connect it to wifi. I bought another Kasa smart plug and it linked quickly and easily.
The app is relatively easy to use (they have just brought in an update so I’m still getting used to it). I would buy this brand again.
Does as advertised. Using it mostly to timer heating blanket as I want to fall asleep without having to worry about the electricity bills! 30 min timer does the job. Nice clean app on phone easy to instal and navigate.
A bit pricey for what it offers, as other brands do the same product , similar rather, with half the price. Sometimes you can get it on discount. If you do, go for it, but I would never pay 55pounds for 2.
It’s bulky and sticks out a lot. Doesnt cover the second outlet, but it’s very obvious and can’t be missed.
Mine is next to my bed, sticks out too much, I have kicked it in my sleep once or twice.
However, would purchase again.
They are compact and as they are about the same width as a normal plug, they fit alongside other plugs in a 4 / 6 way extension adapter.
Android App easy to install and set up. A minor faff to set up initially but once you’ve done one, any others are fairly quick.
Schedule was easy to set up, and its great to be able to set a lamp to come on at sunset and turn off at sunrise.
Its reassuring to be able to view their status on the app. I also like the manual override button on the side – for example if one has a bedroom light plugged in that isn’t due to come on until later but you want it on now, instead of having to spin up the app and switch on from there, a quick press of the button on the side does the job.
I haven’t integrated them with the Alexa app yet so can’t comment on that.
Having had mechanical timer switches in the past, its great to have silence and the ability to vary the schedule.
I bought this as a replacement for a smart plug that lasted for just over a year, this new plug was bought in October, now just over 6 weeks has stopped working as well.
The problem isn’t a connection issue with alexa but more of a mechanical problem inside the plug itself, the light on the plug will turn off and on as instructed but the physical action of the plug switching on and off has stopped working.
Edit 21-11-22
I got in contact with tplink and they responded within 2 days, they advised the following which worked for me, if you have a similar problem it may work for, I would advise getting in touch with tplink first as your problem may be different.
Step 1:Unplug the smart device from the power outlet, shake it several times on hand and plug it back in the power outlet.
Step 2:Press and hold the switch button(for 10 seconds) until the LED flashes amber rapidly to factory reset the plug, then reconfigure it on App.
Step 3:Change a different power socket for the smart plug.
Step 4:Connectanother appliance of small power to the Smart Plug.
Many people looking at these will be comparing them with other popular devices and wondering which to buy.
You’ll have probably narrowed it down to between this and another popular brand; Meross
The Meross are the best value so stop your searching.
The TP Link Kasa are closest overall but they’re more expensive and in my opinion difficult to justify.
Build quality is similar between the Meross and the TP Link Kasa plugs but the latter are larger. Don’t get me wrong both are very compact but the Meross is around 1cm shorter than the Kasa plugs. See photo.
The app quality is similar and both are easy to use and add devices to.
The Kasa app is slightly ‘better’ in the way routines are presented. Meross has a ‘routines’ tab which shows the routines for all Meross devices on one (scrollable) screen. This is somewhat cumbersome when you have several devices. The Kasa app shows the routines only once you’ve clicked on a set device which is neater. However, this has resulted in me switching plugs on/off accidentally. So I’d say it’s ‘horses for courses’ as to which is better.
The Kasa app has an away mode which results in the plugs switching on and off randomly. This will make it look like a house is occupied when on holiday etc if connected to a lamp. It’s a nice feature but can be replicated easily enough by setting routines with Meross if so desired.
I have both the mini plugs and the older, larger Meross devices. Both offer the same functionality. I do think the older plugs ‘cling’ to their wifi slightly better – so consider these if you have sketchy wifi coverage – but otherwise recommend the mini’s.
There are other brands of smart plugs out there and I have tried several:
*SONOFF – great in-line switches but poor plugs
* BG – average all round
* Eve – iPhone only really.
Overall nothing really matches the Meross plugs. Kasa are a close second.
Edit;
I reached out to Meross support (I wanted the countdown timer to have the ability to switch on [not just off]). I received a courteous reply within a few hours. (Kasa don’t offer this functionality either FYI).
I originally purchased the Meross smart plugs, including extensions and individual sockets. By their very nature such sockets are often used in places that are hard to reach so when mine failed with the first month of ownership I decided to return them, whilst I still could. I knew I could delete them all from the app and re-install, but as this was the fourth time in a month I’d had an issue I decided enough was enough and returned them. I have bought this one socket to try and so far, so good. I have been running this socket for a week now, without any issues. I paid 19 for this socket, around 5.50 more than I paid for two Meross individual smart sockets, so they aren’t cheap. But with that, and the TP Link name, is, hopefully, an assurance of quality. I intend to purchase several of these smart sockets, and also several of the extension leads but that will have to be over a period of time due to costs. Unlike the Meross, I can’t afford to purchase them all in one go.
The socket itself is small and very neat. It will not obscure the switch or overhang the next socket in an extension. The software used to operate it is superb, and the options are endless. Use it as a timer, ie turn off charging a smartphone so as not to overcharge it, a lamp in a child’s bedroom etc. Or use it, as I use this one, to turn my home office ready for when I start work, and turn it off at the end of the day. Such settings can always be over ridden, so a change in routine is no problem. You can set a lamp to turn on at sunset, or half an before or after sunset if you prefer. Set the same lamp to turn on at the time you will be getting up and go off an hour after sunrise. The possibilities really are endless.
As mentioned, I intend to turn my house into a smart home and so, if this proves reliable, as I am sure it will, I will purchase several of these and several of the extension leads. In a month or so, in particular if I have any issues, I will update this review, but from me it’s five stars.
Please note, I don’t have this set up to work with Alexa as I talk to people, not inanimate objects. The features on the app are more than sufficient to operate the socket.
