Your Kit Comes With Eggs!

This Insect Lore Twig Kit set comes with a voucher for Indian Stick Insect Eggs. When you are ready to receive the eggs, simply redeem the unique code on Insect Lore’s website and they will ship to the address of your choosing for a small p&p fee. You will receive 8-10 eggs and a care sheet that has their estimated hatching dates, this is normally any time from arrival, and up to 2 months later, so some patience is required!

Once your living twigs hatch from eggs, feed them fresh bramble leaves, privet or ivy (not included). Watch them moult and grow into adult Indian Stick insects in the 30cm hatching habitat.

The expected lifespan of the Stick Insects is around 12 months and they will start laying eggs once they reach maturity at around 4-5 months old, so you can raise a whole new generation if you wish!

Please note: These insects are not native to the UK and should not be released.

Bought this kit for my 9yo in may 2022. It took eggs until august to hatch and we received 7 healthy stick insects. My child loves them but please be mindful the females can lay without a male. I am now using the net cage I bought, a net cage from caterpillars and a terrarium (all from 7 hatchlings) and have lost count as to how many are there now. So please only buy if you are intending to keep long term

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI think it is a useful kit for first time Insect Lore buyers as the information booklet is very useful and it comes with the enclosure needed, however if you already have an enclosure from doing another one of the Insect Lore sets, I’d suggest just using that instead and buying the eggs straight from the website for full price as there’s not really anything else included that is overly needed and you can get the exact information that is in the booklet online. Nine of my eleven stick insect eggs hatched within 2/3 months of receiving them and they were perfectly fine in the enclosure provided, however they have grown extremely quickly and I decided to put them all in an old vivarium I had from a previous pet. I’d say the enclosure included is adequate enough for them, but buying a larger tank instead of the one given would be better as nine 8cm stick insects in the enclosure provided felt a little too small. All that being said, I love this kit and have had great fun watching my stick insects grow!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese arrived quickly but bear in mind that you will then need to order the eggs using the voucher inside, these can take up to two weeks to be delivered. Then the actual stick insects themselves can take upto 8 weeks to hatch. Ours started hatching 4 weeks after arrival. We received 10 eggs of which only 4 survived. The only downside to the living quarters is the net can tear easily. Overall this is a great kit you just need patience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for the kids

Nice idea. Eggs not included, but voucher included and then you pay extra for postage. It’s worth it though. the eggs are reliable and hatched much quicker than expected (within a couple of weeks).

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersEggs arrived just before Christmas, as planned and I thought my son had left them in the test tube for too long.
Surprise! This morning 3 stick insects are visible. Unfortunately it was snowing outside and couldn’t find any privet, ivy or bramble leaves. Not to worry, I’ve found some evergreen and they seem to be thriving. Can’t wait to see if anymore hatch. I am happy with 3 though.
10th February, we now have 5 big stick insects and 1 baby. When we clean them out we keep putting the un hatched eggs back in the enclosure, just to give them a chance. I read somewhere, they can take 8 weeks to hatch. We are feeding them on bramble and ivy leaves and they seem to be thriving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! 3 eggs hatched this morning.

Really love this I origionally purchased this for work but decided to keep them for myself ! The eggs hatched within about 2 weeks, out of the 10 eggs I have 6 that have hatched, they are really easy to look after. Would really recommend this item to others!

Great birthday present idea without costing the earth or looking a cheapskate.

Pity you have to send off for eggs, as I’m sure the child would want a go with it upon opening.

Buying these and the butterfly version as they seem to be a bit more exciting than a jigsaw.

    Would I recommend – Yes.

Bought as a Christmas gift. Sent away for the eggs and they arrived promptly …. within a month we had 5 hatched stick insects. Two seemed to get stuck coming out of their egg and died quiet quickly, the other three are still going strong. They are growing quickly and are fun to watch. They have been eating ivy leaves and appear to be happy – would recommend!!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI purchased the Stick Insect Kit as a Christmas present for my ‘insect mad’ 5 year old nephew. It was an instant hit! I arranged for the eggs to be purchased prior to him opening the gift so everything was ready to go. When I spoke to him on Christmas Day I started to explain that he might need to be patient as the eggs may take up to 6 weeks to hatch. On saying that he advised me that one of the eggs has already hatched and he was able to show me up close on Skype (I am in Australia and he is in UK). When asked by other relatives what he got for Christmas this is the gift he always remembers and shows everyone. He is fascinated by them. Last count he had 2 hatched and 3 getting close! I would highly recommend as a gift.

Brilliant starter kit. Slight issue with part of the kit having a hole in it so not too good for baby insects! Mine kept escaping! Didn’t use the actual eggs. You have to pay for them seperately when sent off. But the insects are loving their new home.

Me and my kids love these! Was expecting to have to wait a few months for them to hatch going by the reviews, but within 2 weeks we had our first stick insect, followed by more a few days later. Kids were so excited and love getting them fresh leaves and spraying the inside as you can watch them drink which is pretty fascinating. Going to take them into the school to show the classes when they are a bit bigger, can’t wait to try the butterflies next when the eggs are available to buy. Would definitely recommend this to any family, great for the kids no matter what age, my 15 year old was as excited as my 4 year old when they started hatching 🙂

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBought this at the last week of April for my son.

Bought the butterfly version for my daughter in May.

The butterflies had grown up and flown away by June, but stick insects had not hatched.

I was about to give up with these and throw them away, but then one hatched in at the start of August, closely followed by the others.

They have gradually grown bigger and bigger over the two months since hatching

So, if you want a quick result, get the butterflies.

If you are prepared to wait, get the stick insects.

Great set. Recommended to us my a friend. We have seen this set in action at school so I decided to purchase one for my daughters birthday. My five year old will so enjoy watching her new pet come to life. Ordered the eggs on-line and they arrived within 3 days! Very efficient system.

My little sister has the butterfly one of these and absolutely loved it, thought I would try her with this one, she loved the set but unfortunately the stick insects never developed. Great gift for kids that love wildlife!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy 10 year old daughter got this for Christmas. Please note that the eggs are not in the box they have to be ordered. We got the eggs in January. The instructions say to allow up to 3 months for hatching. We received 9 eggs. Ours had still not hatched after about a month. I was worried it had been too cold for them as we had not really kept them warm! But come March they began to hatch out! Each day there was a new one appearing. My daughter absolutely loved it. we just keep putting fresh branches of ivy in every so often and keep a tub of some moist soil in there for them. We also spray the leaves once a day with a bit of water. My daughter is fascinated by them. We find them easy to care for. But they do need cleaning out quite often especially now they are getting bigger and eating more!
The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because I am slightly anxious about the fact that they are likely to lay lots of eggs. And I will have to catch them and dispose of them before they hatch as I do not want to end up with hundreds of stick insects. Otherwise this is a great educational set – my daughter has learnt a lot about habitats / camouflage and reproduction.

Gave these to my son for his 8th birthday and although they’re possibly not the most exciting pet, we’re all quite fond of them! The eggs hatched at the beginning of the estimated time period which meant he didn’t have too long to wait (they could have taken several months more!) About 5/10 eggs hatched, but only 2 have grown to adulthood, although that is enough to be entertaining. They’re now laying lots of eggs of their own so we hope to get more before these ones snuff it. We have moved them into a big glass tank as I think the net supplied would be pretty restrictive now they’re about 12cm long.

I bought two sets , got the eggs promptly , one kit had two hatch and one died , the second kit had 3 hatch and one died , the other eggs are over their hatch date , I have a friend who breeds more exotic types of insect and told me not to swap food sources to stick to either privet bramble or ivy as they become confused and stop eating , the room temperature is perfect yet the rest of the eggs seem duds

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI purchased this as a Christmas present for my 8 & 5year old boys. We sent for the eggs and 10 arrived, they had a date of hatching between 13th January and 13 March, it’s the 1 of February today and we have 7 hatched so far – I have to say I was a bit unsure about having insects as not a massive fan, but I am quite taken with them. They all have a name (not sure we are successfully distinguishing between the 7!) and my boys are fascinated with them. Easy to keep and clean – but bare in mind these are a living creature so they do need care and attention, admittedly not a lot.
They are different to the butterflies as you cannot let them go – but really parents should be doing their research before buying these to avoid any disappointment and to learn that you have to actually look after and care for them!
    Highly recommend!

I was looking forward to getting my kit and then when I went online to order my eggs I realised I woukd have to wait another week for my eggs to be dispatched 🙁 I wish there had been an option to dispatch eggs at the same time as the kit!

Then I will have to wait for the eggs to hatch! Hahahaha! Too eager, so impatient!

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersThey are brilliant, we received our eggs fast and waited patiently for a month but its SO worth the wait. we have four hatched so far and they are great. My daughter and I are loving taking care of them. we have ivy all around our home so we’ve built them a home and just keep everything fresh and safe for them. They are so worth trying, BRILLIANT

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI sent this to my nieces for their new stick insects and they love it – it is soft material with a rigid frame, so no concerns over chipping glass/plastic and having sharp edges around them, also is easy to see inside for learning about the insects. Would recommend this as a first-time option.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought as a Christmas present, arrived promptly and even managed to send off for the free stick insect eggs and have them arrive in time for Christmas too! Is a rather long gap given for the hatching of the eggs, but having had stick insects before, I understand this is the way of it with them. Luckily have had 2 babies hatch now in last few days, so not bad at all. Only thing I would say, is to ensure you have a tray or base for this to sit on as it is a thin flexible base, and once have some weight in it in form of jar or something for the leaves/branches of food, it’s impossible to move without risking crushing stick insects if jar falls 🙁 Also, make sure have outlet, or other tanks, for further stick insects/eggs, as past experience tells me that there will be many more soon enough!
    Lovely educational gift though!

I bought 2 of these for my grandsons. They are good present for children who want an interesting pet that does’nt need much looking after. Waiting for eggs to hatch is fun.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe Stick Insect Kit is very good 🙂 I like the way the enclosure is able to collapse it makes it easy 2 store when you are not using it. Its also a good size. The information leaflet is also very useful. The only bad thing i could say is that it doesn’t state that you have to pay an extra two pounds fifty postage and packaging for the eggs. I ordered my eggs yesterday and am hoping to receive them in a few days when the payment goes through. They send them in 1st class post so they should arrive the next day. Hopefully i will have lots of little stick insects in the next coupple of weeks 🙂

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI kept Indian Stick Insects when I was a child so thought it would be nice to allow my own children to do the same. This kit was a gift for my eldest daughter’s 6th birthday and she was delighted with it. We sent off for the eggs and followed all the instructions carefully and still six months after their latest advised hatch date, they have not hatched. We have since visited a garden centre and bought some adult stick insects, they have laid eggs and they have hatched this week. I have no idea why the original ones didn’t hatch because clearly the conditions were perfect for the ones from our own insects. I have only ever heard of a couple of people have the same ‘non hatching problem’ so I expect we just had a bad batch. If I was to do this again I would save the money (you have to pay P&P for the eggs that you send off for) and just buy ready hatched ones (they cost us 1 each and have laid so many eggs that we need never be without stick insects!!).

Egg problems aside, this kit is excellent quality and I am considering buying another (though probably a larger version) just to house some of our new hatchlings. The early frustrations caused to the children have been more than made up for now that we are seeing new babies every day.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe stick insects themselves are great. We had a couple die, seemingly because they didn’t manage to kick the eggs off themselves, so the next one that was stuck to its egg I carefully helped out and it lived. We managed to get five in the end, who are all alive and well several months later.

The only thing I’d mark it down for is that the price does not include the eggs. You have to pay an additional couple of quid for them. It’s not a lot, but if a child is buying them out of their pocket money, that cost should be either included in the price or made clear from the start.
