While this might be one of the weaker of the 4 lord of the rings precons, you can make it fantastic with just a few tweaks.

Lots of valuable cards and some fun mechanics with either a vote based commander or a crying deck.

For the price it’s totally worth it.

Great product, however when shipped, was not placed in any protective packaging, so minor dents are on the boxing due to it being shipped in an envelope sleeve.
This doesn’t worry me at all, but be wary if wanting to keep sealed!

So here’s the skinny: this is a really good product, but the key is finding it for a decent price. There are a lot of “secondary market types” that will list this for double the MSRP. Technically, there isn’t like a real MSRP, but this should be under a hundred bucks. Decently under, like 70-80. If you pick it up in that range, it’s really sweet:

You get an amazing looking LotR box, an oversized d20, one collector booster (which could contain a serialized card, but probably won’t), and 8 set boosters. You also get a bunch of foil lands – two of each color, AND a foil one ring, which is part of a four-card scene featuring the struggle at Mount Doom for the one Ring. Granted, this particular “The One Ring” goes for a little less than some versions, but if you’re looking for a copy to play, this is an excellent way to get it.

One Ring to Rule Them All! I highly recommend this product if you can find it for a decent price.

If you’re wanting to learn MTG and a LOTR fan, I think this is a good place to start. Once you get familiar with these two decks and learn the play mechanics, then buy more boosters to expand and improve your decks before going down to your local gaming store to play with others. It’s a fun starter for LOTR fans to get into MTG or LOTR fans to collect.

MTG LOTR cards are good for “modern” and “commander” play but not for “standard” play.

Being an ardent fan of both ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Magic: The Gathering’, I was intrigued when the LOTR MTG Deck Starter Kit was announced. Having spent a good amount of time exploring it, here’s my take.

    Shining Points of the Kit:

Faithful Incorporation of LOTR Lore: This kit is a masterpiece in how it weaves the intricate tales and characters of Middle-Earth into the mechanics of MTG. Whether it’s the abilities of the One Ring or the might of the Riders of Rohan, every card resonates with authenticity. For fans of Tolkien’s universe, each draw feels like diving into a chapter of the epic saga.

Value for Money: For the price point, the individual card values are impressive. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing with artwork reminiscent of Tolkien’s world, but many also hold substantial gameplay and trade value, making the kit a wise purchase for both collectors and players.

A Slight Shadow Over the Shire:

While the integration of lore and the card value were spot on, I did find a disparity between the deck strengths. The green and white deck, representing the forces of good in Middle-Earth, felt considerably weaker compared to the menacing might of the black and red deck. It’s a small gripe, but it did hinder the gameplay balance a bit. I would’ve preferred both decks to be on equal footing, ensuring close, nail-biting matches every time.

    Final Words:

The LOTR MTG Deck Starter Kit is an absolute treat for fans of both worlds. It’s a beautiful amalgamation of storytelling and strategic gameplay. Though it would’ve been perfect with slightly more balanced decks, it’s still an impressive creation that promises hours of Middle-Earth infused duels. Worth every coin of the Shire!

Got this to play with my friend who’s a big LOTR fan but to say we were overwhelmed is an understatement
This comes with a rulebook but unfortunately it’s missing a few of the rules and descriptions for card text, instead giving a link to the Magic website which wasn’t ideal for our first time playing the game
The art and overall quality of the product is fantastic but I’d definitely recommend during some research into Magic to see if it’s for you rather than diving straight into the game like we did

Amazing artwork and alot of fun to play with. Well balanced decks to play against each other and the bonus online decks are cool too! Would of been nice to have some LOTR D20’s thrown in, but can’t complain for the price.

I bought this starter deck to play with my girlfriend who is knew to the game and she really liked it. It’s pretty easy to understand the game with mostly simple mechanics and there are some pretty valuable cards in the decks as well.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersRegarding the main package:

The package arrived undamaged (though had some light soil for some reason but none of it stuck around). Two decks are included (I will review them later here but TLDR they both look rather playable for beginners but I wouldn’t raid the closest tournament with them just yet) as well two identical boxes, and two different codes for online redemption (located at the backs of the decks).

Regarding Hobbits (a review of the Green/White deck):

So I was under the impression that this was going to be the Elven deck when I first ordered it but, with the heavy inclusion of Hobbits and food generating tokens, I believe now that this might be the Hobbit deck though with only Frodo rather than the Samwise/Frodo and Pippin/Mary pairs. If you were hoping that getting this pair would get you the duel 100-Card commander Hobbit deck then, unfortunately, this is not it my friends and without Bilbo Baggins, the ramping health gains will not have the pay off the 100-Card commander deck boasts. However, this is still a nice 60-Card deck to play with the other included deck, Armies of Mordor. Edit: Turns out the food ramping with this deck is not geared towards *Health* increase, but *Toughness* increase and it WORKS. After some testing I can comfidently say that Sauron has NOTHING on Second Breakfast.

A View of Dark Tidings (a review of the black/red deck):

The Armies of Mordor deck is definitely worth the pack and will certainly stand well compared to the Hobbit counterpart. However it might confuse new comers to the game due to the amass ability that is so prevalent in this deck. If you *do* happen to be as clueless about this mechanic as I was before I looked it up, here’s the basics: If you don’t have an army token, now you do and it gains a boost depending on the card that summoned it. If you already do, great, now it’s even tougher and you’re that much closer to bashing your opponent into wicked fertilizer. Pair this ability with the damaging spells, lands and creature abilities and you’ll be making your opponents wish they had some Hobbit food to keep thier hopes of winning going. Other cards, such as Gollum, Scheming Guide and Witch-king, Bringer of Ruin, punish your opponent with every attack by removing creatures, dealing damage or giving you a chance to draw more cards offering good control options as well.

TLDR: I’d recommend getting the Hobbit commander deck if you really want the food token exploits but Sauron stands strong on his own. Would recommend especially for the low price as of this review.

A surprisingly good showing for LOTR going forward

This precon is excellent. The cards are beautiful with their lord of the rings artwork on all the cards and the deck list is great.

The deck is slower than the others, but with some great mana rocks in the deck it works very well. It’s excellent to see how good the mana base is on all the precons in the set. No longer do precons feel like the manabase was an afterthought.

The only issue for this deck is that the set Sauron should have been the commander instead of the one made for this deck. I immediately put the Sauron into 99 and replaced it with Sauron, The Dark Lord card from the normal set. I recommend everyone does the same as it makes a huge difference.

I haven’t been so happy with magic precons in such a long time.

Although there is controversy around the artwork itself and how the characters are depicted, it can’t be denied that the artwork itself is superb and makes for a fantastic addition to any LoTR collection.
Looking forward to collecting more !

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI stopped collecting magic cards, however wanted a 2 player starter kit to occasionally play that would also entice friends and family or might not understand the rules. The Lord of the Rings set is perfect as its a fantasy IP that everyone is familiar with.

CONS: Ultra Pro deck sleeves won’t fit in the deck boxes provided, so either have loose sleeved cards or boxed un-sleeved cards. Unfortunately, the deck boxes are about 1-2mm too small for protector sleeves so I think thats either a design or marketing flaw.
On amazon, its 3 more expensive than buying it in the local gaming store, that surprised me!

The lands are basic lands, I was hoping for the LOTR themed lands, that’s a pity, not a big deal.

PROS: Two codes for MTG Arena, gives the ability to play online and invite a friend to play online !

Nice presentation and cool deck boxes.

Great for new players unfamiliar with MTG.
