Combining Breast and Bottle Feeding

The ultra-thin, soft silicone material of the Philips Avent Nipple Shield is closer to our infant feeding solutions to help seamless transition between breast and bottle feeding when combining both.

Feed at Baby’s Pace

If mum’s milk flow needs controlling or baby lacks strength, these nipple shields are also a great support. The three holes in the tip of the shield can help rate the breastmilk flow for baby in case there is an oversupply of milk. This way baby can drink at his own pace in case mum is experiencing an overactive let down.

Easy to Clean Anytime

It takes less than 10 minutes to clean the nipple shields before each use. Either place them in boiled water for five minutes or use the hygiene case. If using the hygiene case place both well-rinsed nipple shields in the case and add 25ml/0.9 fl.oz. water. Then place the nipple shields in a 750-1,000W microwave for three minutes. Once letting them cool for five minutes and draining the water away, they’re ready for use. Use the convenient hygienic carrying case on-the-go, to store your nipple shields and to keep them clean.

After being in horrendous pain with trauma to both breasts from incorrect latches I was willing to try anything to continue the journey. These shields have cut outs so baby’s nose and chin are both still on the breast with skin to skin contact which I’d do important! The base is wide to promote a good latch if/when you stop using shields and my baby took no settling in period as long as I expressed some milk into the shield. They don’t stick down (I tried everything) but no shields do and it’s not that much of a big thing that they don’t! If you need shields to help with your journey I highly recommend

Information on breastfeeding problems such as nipple pain is all about management through positioning. There are advice leaflets and professionals who will help you with this including weekly groups and of course just mums in general. This is all well and good, however what do you do if that’s not been an achievable solution? Do you persevere regardless then give up in tears? If your plan was to breast feed or even if it wasn’t but you are tempted to give it a go when your milk comes in , in days 3-5 then these are a great support. Easy to clean, discrete to use, practice with the shields at home in privacy before you take the baby to a cafe ( wear a poncho) . The baby will still get your milk but without the faff of a pump and a bottle and all the organisation and delay involved with that.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBaby had latch issues, received it today and washed and sterilised within 10 mins. Cleaning was a breeze. Then the feeding took about 5 mins for baby to learn and some persistance but got the latch perfectly and first time ever had a full feed on the breast! Very happy with it.

I found these nipple shields fantastic in the early stages of breastfeeding. They were very comfortable and easy to use. They allowed time for my nipples to recover from the process of getting used to regular feeds, whilst allowing breast feeding to continue. My little boy had no issues with any confusion related to the shields and was able to quickly switch between an unshielded nipple and one with the nipple protector in place. I would recommend these to anyone to support ongoing breastfeeding especially in the early stages when it can be a very painful process.

These were a total life saver for me when neither of my daughters would latch (at all) I fed my first daughter for a year and am currently using them with my second. Total genius product. I would recommend everyone to take a pair to hospital with them in case they struggle to feed

Really happy with these! In the beginning my baby didn’t latch on to one of my breasts and these nipple shields helped him. He had no problem at all to latch on and now after a few times he can actually latch on to the breast as he is supposed to. Definitely worth getting these! Either to use over sore nipples or if your baby has issues latching on like mine did.
Of course it’s very individual how babies are with latching on etc. But for us these
    Ones really did the trick!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPartner found these to be a god send as we were having problems with the amount of time it took for baby to feed due to having tongue tie (1hour some days). after using these baby is feeding alot more!
only one downside we found about this was the covers seemed to shrivel and become un-useable once sterilised in heat.
otherwise reordering another set to keep within travel bag (and also to sterilise in cold)

Helped to feed whilst having cracked nipples after birth and at the beginning of breastfeeding, used for a few weeks whilst nipples healed and they were really helpful and helped me to continue breastfeeding 4 months on without the use of the shield now. Great to help get started feeding and get over the painful first few weeks when you start breastfeeding.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersWhat a great idea, I wish we’d know about these sooner … our new born was latching very hard indeed causing considerable pain, positions were all perfect as per many midwives / heath visitors advice but it was still initially very painful indeed … these took the edge off and after a few days were only needed for the initial latch when baby was fairly ferocious! Once she got some milk she calmed right down and the shields could be removed and feeding could continue …. after about a month we didn’t need these at all.

I wish the NCT / midwives / anyone!! had mentioned these before birth as these would have saved a lot of sawness

We were even told by midwives that these should not be used …. total and utter rubbish, the use of these actually enabled us to continue breast feeding, they allowed the nipples to heal whilst baby learned how to breast feed calmly …. if we’d used them at the first signs of pain the damage would have been less and breast feeding would have been less stressful …. I recommend any mum to be has these on standby just in case

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersWe switched to the Avent brand after having no success with Mothercare’s own-brand nipple shields. These protectors do the job and have helped our baby to latch on to the breast very well. We would have given them a five-star rating if they had been a little more ‘clingy’ (try a dab of Vaseline on either side to help them stick to the skin) and if they had come in a case that could be sterilised.
