We get these every year, having got the net cage habitat before. They are always really good. There’s a guarantee that if you don’t get 3 butterflies, you can send back the caterpillars and get some more, but I’ve never had to try and claim.

A bit gross, but fascinating! All the caterpillars turned into butterflies and the kids enjoyed learning about the process, then of course setting the butterflies free.
You need the kit-this is just the refill!

I buy these nearly every year and my kids love it. This time we had 2 caterpillars that were significantly smaller than the other 3 and took longer to turn into butterflies in the end. When we released them 2 butterflies were stuck in the mating position which meant they didn’t fly out but we safely put them on a flower bush

Worth buying, very educational and incredible to watch the webbing process to chrysalis to metamorphosis into these five beautiful butterflies. The meconium gave us a scare initially but was happy to find out this is normal. Highly recommend for any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for all ages

We purchased these last year and again this year. Expensive for what you get but love watching the little caterpillars grow and evolve and then release them. My daughter watches them everyday. Grow so quickly and the product is easy to use

Just wonderful watching my son get excepted about the caterpillars growing from day one to eventually hatching a couple of weeks later. Ours arrived well in advance of his birthday; our mistake. However, it meant that the first one hatched on his birthday making it even more magical. Excellent for kids.

The little tub arrived and we didn’t think much of them, after a day or two they started to wriggle. All of our 5 survived the journey and soon started to grow as they should as per the instructions. They grew beautifully and were released happy. A good learning experience for kids, one we shall repea

My package came safely and all caterpillars active the day after, I already have the enclosure etc so it’s brilliant having the option to just buy the caterpillars on their own ! We are very excited to see them grow again!

This is a fantastic opportunity to teach children about the life cycle of a butterfly. Children can watch all the stages of the development learn about how time or the passage of time effects us all. The butterflies grow from the caterpillars and you can have a freedom party for the butterflies when they are ready to be let out. I have used these for many years with my own children and in schools/nurseries.

We really enjoyed watching these at school. Unfortunately I lost the stand to place the lid in so had to fashion my own but that was my fault. One chrysalis fell so didn’t survive and one butterfly came out with damaged wings but the rest were fine. Very straightforward to use.

The caterpillars arrived in tact and all were alive. There is a guarantee that they provide for at least three to be alive. Instructions are in the box on how to best care for them. So they were value for money and easy to use. I have ordered more.

They arrived on time, they have all been growing as expected and are now all resting on the lid ready to be transferred into their new habitat. I’m very happy with my purchase and amazed at how easy it has been so far. I would definitely recommend this for any parents of children of any age my children are ages from 2-11 and all very interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars I’d definitely recommend!

During the Lockdown we ended up getting 4 pots of these! Kids and I were fascinated! and learned lots about metamorphosis. they wanted to keep going and going! eventually had to stop buying them though. Although have since purchased Silkworms from the same company.
The company were polite and nice to deal with and responded to any emails quickly.
Highly recommend, kids really enjoyed checking in on them everyday watching them grow and then chrysalis – then emerge and then finally free them and have a little hold.

We’ve done this a couple of times before and this is a really straightforward and easy way to see how butterflies develop from being tiny caterpillars to fully fledged butterflies. It’s a good learning experience for us and our children, I still find elements of nature to be pretty amazing. Pack contained five live caterpillars. We already had the net. Despatched within expected timelines.

For a few years we always had some butterflies during the summer holidays (along with the ones already visiting!). Thought we would give it a go during these unusual times. All arrived on time, worried about the heat having a negative affect on them but they were all moving ok after a little while. Four of them look as expected but one a bit different, which the kids named after me. Mostly as its hairy and less pretty, so thanks for that :-).
They are eating well and getting bigger so all ok for now. Would buy from here again without any problems. Not sure how to rate stars for Thickness and Sheerness, does this mean the caterpillars? I think they may take offence at this and didn’t want to invite legal action! So just rated “5 Stars” in value for money.

Love the Caterpillars but thought they be better taken out of the pot into a larger tank. Have tried this using natural resources to mimic nature and a natural habitat such as flowers, sticks, logs and leaves. I also placed their food on the lid and placed it in the tank. I used a vegetable bag with material that resembled and matched the material of tights for the top for the Caterpillars to hang and it worked. All 5 Caterpillars became butterflies. They all survived and flew away.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersItem took forever to arrive but given the circumstances at the moment it is to be expected. Once they arrived we sat down with the kids and information sheet was told to leave them in the container and they should soon start to wake up and eat. Only one catapiller woke.
It has now started the process of being in a cocoon. So out of five catapillers only one seems to be alive.
Possibly the journey process caused this i dont know. They are all still in the container so will see once the butterfly emerges if the others are just behind although it has been weeks.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersIf you are the happy owner of an Insect Lore butterfly farm you’ll need this voucher to order a set of new crawlers for the next season. Curiously we received a voucher that displayed a price, poorly hidden by black marker, that was a couple of pounds lower than we paid through Amazon.

Even so, our first Butterfly garden was a huge success, mostly with my wife, who considered the caterpillars as her babies. Her actual children were enthused, but less so.
When ordering this you literally get sent a voucher than you’ll then have to send to Insect Lore to receive a cup of 4 or 5 live caterpillars and a sufficient base of food to make them grow enough to go into the chrysalis phase. The food substance looked disgusting in my opinion therefore I handed the caterpillars the occasional crumb of meatball or sausage, which I think they very much appreciated. The cardboard box that you’ll receive and cup cover can transform into a chrysalides station. Yet this is a tricky stage as the chrysalis’ need to hang in a comfortable but secure manner

Of the batch of 5 caterpillar we received through this voucher, only 4 emerged alive from their chrysalis. And one of these four had a permanently wrinkled wing. Even so the children were very excited to grant their temporary winged housemates to freedom.

The only drawback is that it’s a cumbersome process; first you’ll have to order the voucher through Amazon then you’ll have to send the voucher to Inset Lore, who will return your cup of caterpillars, several weeks passed in between.. Then the caterpillars start eating and growing for well over a week. Next the chrysalis’ will hang around for at least another few days. And then they will have to complete their butterfly transformation for another 7 to 10 days.. before you can release them. During the last stage our planned holiday car trip abroad started so we had no choice but to very carefully the take the fairly large butterfly garden / habitat with us in the car. Luckily the customs officer didn’t notice. So ultimately these butterflies are now happy living ever after in the poppy fields of Flanders.

All in all; the caterpillar reorder was a very satisfying experience to my wife, somewhat amusing for the children but beware of the logistics.

Easy to set up,basically just put them away from sunlight and draughts ,and let them grow till chrysalis stage ,wait 2 days ,then transfer to habitat net.I’m on my 6th tub waiting for the chrysalis stage, already released 10 into countryside on previous order .I did find however that none of caterpillars attached themselves to lid ,they lay on bootom of tub to go to chrysalis stage, laid them in habitat on paper towel and all emerged ok.I also found that they like watermelon the best ,compared to cut flowers etc.I think insectlore are doing a splendid job selling these butterfly kits ,helping their numbers ,as all i see in rural areas is meadows ,etc getting smaller as the race to build housing estates ,what are rural areas going to be like in 50yrs from now?.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersThis is a lovely thing to buy if have children or if love butterflies. I have a 5 year old daughter and we did this last year so decided to get a refill and do it again, she loved watching the caterpillars grow and the excitement of them turning into chrysalises. Was very exciting to keep checking if any had emerged as butterflies then getting to choose which fruit to give them. We kept them for a few days as one was a slow developer, thought it wasn’t going to come out and had explained that sometimes they don’t make it to being butterflies and we would have to release the others the following morning only to wake and discover the last one emerged. She loved releasing them to and got to hold them on her hand before they flew away. Loves seeing butterflies even more now as thinks they could be the ones we helped.

i had two lots of caterpillars, one for me for my inner child to enjoy and another lot for my friends kids… boths sets of caterpillars developed well and it was a great experience for children and adults alike to watch over a few weeks the wonder of the development of tiny little black sqidgy things eat and eat and grow and grow into quite fat caterpillars before hanging themselves up at the top of the pot ready to morph into beautiful butterflies….which they did… it was great watching them break out of their cocoon and spread their wings for the first time, and to watch them grow within minutes and then notice as the colours fill their wings, then continue to watch them as they feed and flit and fall about as they learn to fly…and then you release them and watch them take flight in the big world outside… fabulous… I’ll get another batch for this summer now my grand children are old enough so they can enjoy them too. 2-3 weeks of watching the development of caterpillar to full fledged butterfly is short enough to keep a child’s attention, so is a great thing to do in the summer holidays. Have fun.
