Does the job
Great product. Goes along way. Although the tin was smaller than expected, but that’s probably my fault for not checking. Did one full coat of a large radiator cover and covered very well. So I’m happy
Water-based primer / undercoa
This tin of paint is in a convenient size, as it can be held in one hand, while you paint with the other. It gives a good coat of first paint, and is dry within a couple of hours. As the paint is water-based, the brush is easily cleaned under the tap. It needs a coat of gloss paint on top, however (from the same maker, and also water-based) before it can be subjected to, say, a hot shower, otherwise the simple first coat of primer / undercoat is liable to run. Give the primer/ undercoat plus gloss top coat 24 hours to dry thoroughly, then it’s completely resistant to rain, or a hot shower inside.
One coat almost completely covered my mahogany stained cabinet doors. One small tin was enough to do 7 full cabinet doors, 2 glass cabinet door frames and 3 drawer fronts – and there was around just under a 1/4 a tin left. It’s a beautiful colour too, dries to a sort of lavender grey and I’m almost tempted to just seal it rather than paint over it.
Before and after! Very impressed with this – small pot covered the whole chest of drawers with 2 coats and looked as though it was already painted. I did put paint + gloss at the top. Will definitely be buying it again in the future!
I used this primer on wood before applying acrylic paint. It works well, seals the wood and has enough opacity. It can be used as a white paint if applied more than one coat.
good paint but needs a solvent to clean brush
covers well, dries fairly quickly but maybe not as fast as suggested, which is perhaps a good thing as too fast can spoil an even finish; main downside is having to use a solvent to clean brush
I have an outhouse that has leak from the roof for the past 16 years i’ve tried numerous fixes, re felting, trowel on sealants and none have worked they always start to leak again after a few months. I tried this and it actually worked no water gets through as you can see from the photo. The water just pools with no leakage. One word of advice wear a long sleeved to while applying i got a few splashes on my arms and i had to scrub them to get it off.
All paints are grossly overpriced in my view so there’s no 5 stars on price. However, the paint is incredibly good stuff. Used on new softwood, Great coverage, easy cleanup, fast drying and highly opaque. Highly recommended
This undercoat & primer is absolutely fantastic! Seriously, it is an absolute dream! It is brilliant opaque white, so covers marks and walls perfectly so much so to the point that you actually don’t need to paint over the top, as this is good enough – people would be none the wiser if you just left this on the walls. I found when I put the brilliant white paint over the top, that it looked more dull than this primer/undercoat, and I preferred the powerful opaque look of this. I have spent so much money, running into the early hundreds on different primers, undercoats etc – this is by far the BEST one! My only downside and major gripe is how small the tins are, and although it is a fab undercoat/primer, they are far too expensive for what you get. I paid nearly 30 for the 2.5 litre, and had to mix it with water to give me more coverage – Rustins you need to do a 5 – 10 litre bucket like the trade paints.
I have purchased and used so many different types of Primers in the past for metals, wood and stone and all ranging in price. This Rustins 500ml Quick Dry Primer Undercoat has so far proved to be the best one I’ve used for wood and stone. I purchased it for the main purpose of painting some garden stones ready for a top coat of glow in the dark paint.
The 500ml tin arrived very well protected and sealed with 2 metal clips to ensure the lid did not come off. Once opened and given a good stir it is a lovely consistency to work with. Not too runny but not too thick either. The coverage on my garden stones has been just what I wanted. No need to touch up missed bits or lighter areas; it gave a good even coverage. It took roughly 1 hours to completely dry in the hot weather we have had recently. It dries to a smooth finish which is more of a matt than a gloss. It has been easy to paint over and there have been no signs of the paint coming off when I applied a top coat of different paint.
I’m really happy with this white primer for use on wood and stone, I can’t comment on other surfaces as I only needed it for wood & stone. Hence I recommend it based on my experience.
