Perfect for a small communications closet under the stairs. I installed the 24-port unmanaged switch, 24-port patch panel, 26-port coaxial patch panel, and the power strip. It gives a far neater and clean finish the alternative and allows for ethernet connections in every room of my house plus enough connections for my theater room to have wired internet connections.

Decided that screwing my network gear to wall studs wasn’t very professional looking, this rack is the perfect replacement. Now i just need to clean up the cabling… 🙂
Ships flat packed, but easy to assemble, easy to mount (used #12 or #14 round head screws), and the included cage nuts and bolts are easy to use.
Measure your equipment depths! Glad it’s open to the back or i would have had to get right angle power cords for one of my peices!

Great price, works great, measure your depths!

This rack was quite easy to assemble. If i recall correctly, i believe there were a total of 16 screws to assemble this. Because of the construction and materials, it is solid. The mounting points are also conveniently 16″ apart, or the standard width of your studs.

It is not your standard depth rack, so in adding a shelf, I had to rig up an extra framing around the back to prevent the self from preventing the mounting. All in all, the wood frame actually helped the whole unit install a lot easier, as my studs were 13″ apart where this network home end was to land.

    Easy to assemble and mou

This thing would have installed quite easily if the house builders had used straight 2×4 studs. The mounting holes are truly 16 inch on center. The rack is quite sturdy. I don’t have anything heavy in it, but it has resisted my test tugging. I am quite happy with the rack.

Worked well for me when I redid my ethernet/wifi. Plenty of mount space for a small home system. Very solidly constructed. Best to have 2 people when mounting to wall due to weight. Fit perfectly on 16″ centers. Correct dimensions are now listed (apparently an issue in the past).

Worked well for what we needed. Installed this on a project that required installation of rack mounted switches, ups, and multiple patch panels for cable co equipment. Mounted inside a 24″ x 24″ steel enclosure and it fit perfectly. The product is very sturdy and easy to install.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA good solid rack that you can wall mount. It does use the 2 part/plug in rack screws instead of having threaded holes in the rack, most likely as a cost reduction effort, but the included screws are sufficient for mounting several devices. It had enough screws included for a shelf, power distribution, Ethernet switch, Firewall and cable manager. If I had a bunch of 1U devices I would need to get more screws+clips.

I took off 1 star for cable management. There are holes in the rack along the top and bottom horizontal pieces in the front. You can use these with cable ties but gaining access to the back of them is very poor when you have gear installed in the rack. I had my shelf installed at the bottom and there is no way to get to the back of the holes to turn the cable tie back around. Plan ahead.

    Otherwise a good rack.

Although this doesn’t come with assembly instructions, you probably won’t need them. The unit assembles with 16 bolts and then mounts to two studs (it is exactly 16 inches between the mounting holes so no shims or additional mounting will be required to get this bolted into standard studs).

PROS: Sturdy, easy to assemble and mount. Looks fantastic. Comes with adequate mounting hardware.

    CONS: None so far.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersAfter researching several options, I chose this one due to it’s design with a semi open top to allow cabling to come into the rack which fit my use case perfectly.

The rack did not come with instructions on how to put it together, but it’s easy to figure out once you get started.

I mounted it directly to studs behind a drywall as the holes on the rack are 16″ on center – which match the studs in newer homes – using 2 1/2″ lag bolts with 1 1/4″ washers.

Overall I am extremely happy with it’s design and it worked exactly as I needed it to in my use case. Would buy again/recommend.

Well built. I have a 24-port switch, patch bar, power bar, shelf with 2 sonos amps on it, a NAS, SmartThings hub, and arlo router on top, with various cables running through it. It holds everything with ease, and looks good doing it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usersgood sturdy build. I wish the wall-mount bolt hoels were centered for 16″ studs on a wall, but other than that, it seems fine.

some things to update / upgrade / enhance:
    1. make the top plate solid or vented with a cable passthru hole, as that would serve as a shelf for things like wireless APs that are better served OUTSIDE the metal enclosure.
    2. center the mounting holes for 16″ centers.
    3. the vent slots on the upper and lower faces could be used for cable management. make a plastic snap-in C or G shaped clip so users can place them along the vent holes to hold cables for patch panels and switches. Then you don’t have to burn a U for horizontal wire management.
    4. Add some vertical wire management to the sides of the vertical rails, or on the back side of the horizontal legs. That would help with a clean install and eliminate the need for zip ties.

Very solid rack. Sturdy. Great for home or small business use.

You need to make sure you anchor it to something solid. Find the studs before mounting it.

It is only 12″ deep. This is good and bad. It is deep enough for patch panels or small switches. Make sure you check dimensions of equipment you plan on placing in this rack before ordering it.

It has no assembly instructions, but the build is very straight-forward. I had no problems with it. It looks well engineered and is very solid.

Update – I liked this rack so much I bought a second one for a different project. Still equally satisfied.

I thought I’d already reviewed this but it showed up in my list of things that need my thoughts. Back in the beginning there was one thing I didn’t like — I think it was a lack of good instructions (StarTech please note people buying a 12-inch-deep 8U rack usually don’t have a lot of rack-construction experience). Since then I’ve been very happy with it. Secure and sturdy — just right for a small office with a couple switches, patch panels, maybe a UPS. I got the Fixed version but the others all look equally solid.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersI had the StarTech 6U rack (ASIN: B000VDPBXM) and needed more space since I was adding more equipment. This 8U rack was perfect for the limited space in my closet and holds all my equipment securely. It came with no instructions but it was pretty easy to put together. Well-built solid rack, would definitively recommend, nice job StarTech!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThe item arrived in perfect condition and while looking at the parts I realized the dimensions mentioned on the site are not accurate. Though title reflects it now, the dimensions are wrong in product description.

I was unable to fit a Catalyst Switch in the rack while still having room to plug in the power. An extra two inches would be required for Catalyst series switches. SG series switches fit fine. It is 12″ deep.

I am now ordering instead StarTech.com 8U Open Frame Wall Mount Equipment Rack – Adjustable Depth RK812WALLOA (Black) which can go 20 inches deep.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOrdered two for a couple labs at work. The rack is solid and well built. It’s square-hole mounts, which I prefer… tapped rail holes are the worst, almost never tapped correctly, constantly break screws, etc. The assembly “instructions” weren’t great, but it’s not that difficult to figure out. This is a shallow rack (12″ depth) , so make sure your equipment will fit in it (including the power cable on the rear of your equipment) before you purchase.

Perfect for my application. I use it to host my Yamaha receiver, HDMI switching, etc. Together with some cable management solutions and flat racks, it makes for a very clean look, easy to clean underneath, no wires, etc. Robust and easy to mount.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersGiven a particular challenge of installing a rack cage for audio gear (I’m a working voice actor) inside an existing bookcase, I scoured the Internet for solutions. There was only one rack that was slightly less than 20″ wide that was set up to handle standard 19″ recording equipment like amps, compressors, etc.

This Star Tech unit is solid as a rock, nice heavy gauge steel. No instructions, but if you live on planet Earth, you can assemble this rack in a couple of minutes flat. Plus, they give you a bag full of more rack mounting clip nuts than you could possibly use. Also, even though these racks are not technically mountable, they sit flush on top of each other, so I used some soft vinyl bumpers to stack a pair, and it was no problem/

    Huge recommendation for this product.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is absolutely perfect for my needs. I prefer this one over other small rack designs that angle your components down towards the back. If I could attach a picture to this review I’d show you my setup. I have a power strip, UPS, network switch, and desktop size NAS all in this. I even had enough room to put a cool Nixie clock on a shelf in it. Another great thing about this design is that you can put something on top of it too. In my case I have my printer sitting on top of the whole thing. I also saved some space by placing my NAS, because it’s not the rackmount version, on the bottom, which actually sits well below where the lowest 1U would be. I don’t have this attached to a wall, but on top of my desk which I prefer so I can slide it forward for easier access to everything in back. I imagine having it wall mounted would make things a bit more difficult.

The included hardware was appreciated and was exactly the right amount I needed for the four components I have installed. Assembly was easy and all parts were finished well, with no rough edges. Very nice product.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI had cat 6 run throughout my house and a small home server rack put in. The smallest the home automation company could offer was a 13U which is way too large for what I wanted to house in it and where it needed to fit on the wall. I have a 24 port un-managed switch, a small HP home media server, the cable modem and the router in this rack and I have room to spare. It mounts securely to the wall. The bad – it doesn’t use traditional server screws, you have to use theirs but it came with enough for what i needed. It did NOT, however, come with enough screws, and hardware to populate all 8U’s. If you were to do 8 1U devices you would need to find more of their screws.

I ordered this back in late 2012 and just installed this less than a month ago. I wanted faster connectivity with my home network besides doing wireless for everything. I bought the power bar, shelf, and a gigabit switch to go with my gigabit modem and router. This was a perfect unit for my family and can be hidden in a small closet or laundry room.

This unit didn’t come with screws to mount this on the wall, but a quick trip to Home Depot and $4.00 later I was able to mount this nicely.

    Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI bought this unit along with an Odyssey ARS1 1 Space Rack Shelf Accessory , a Cyberpower CPS-1215RMS Rackmount PDU Power/Surge Strip – 12-Outlet 15A 1800VA 1800 Joules , a D-Link 24-Port Rackmountable Gigabit Switch DGS-1024D and a TRENDnet 24-port Cat6 Unshielded Patch Panel TC-P24C6 .

I received the unit and was very impressed with how well constructed and how strong the unit is. I have owned other more expensive racks and they were much more flimsy. All the other items fit perfectly in the unit without any issues. The unit is only 12 inches deep and allows for a small install footprint. I highly recommend this rack mount for home and small office installs, just make sure to verify components depths so they fit as I did before buying everything.

The first rack arrived damaged – Amazon replced for me no charge. Thanks Amazon!

Mounted on the wall with some wood screws (not provided). Good thick black paint. Had to buy some extra cage nuts to mount my gear in it. Other than that (and the poor packaging) it works great.

Great product for the price and to be able to support a separate shelf which will support my NAS, ZyXel Firewall and Cable Modem, this unit is more than enough to keep my home network devices organized. The other devices are a 24 ports Cisco switch, a 24 ports cat6 patch panel and an APC surge arrest unit. The missing star is because this rack is only 12 inches deep and the Cisco switch needs some clearance for its power cord, other than that, everything is OK for its intended purposes. Shipping was not as promissed from Amazon; I bought together with this rack the extra shelf and a punch down blade and it all shipped separated. To this writing, the shelf is in transit and it have some 10 before scheduled delivery but the rack package and the blade arrived two days before schedule. The delivery promised on Amazon site is not always dead on spot; keep that in mind.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersA solid rack that holds 8 rack mount items – solid and well built. I would have given this rack a “5” but for two things. One, you need to insert small snap-in nuts to hold the rack equipment, and they don’t give you enough nuts to fill in the rack (tapped rails would have been easier); and the instructions were terrible (actually there were no assembly instructions). It didn’t take too long to figure it out, but I did have to take it apart a couple times to get it right. All in all a good value and a great addition to our server room.

I have installed this rack in my basement storage room to install patch panels and home network switch. I was surprised with the solid construction of the rack and open construction made cable routing to the patch panels very easy.

My only problem was with the switch which was deeper then the depth of the rack so I couldn’t mount it but have it sitting at the bottom of the rack on an angle. Overall, I am happy with the installation because it allowed me to keep everything in one place, out of the way and still have it easily accessible for any patching I have to do.
