How to sow your Lawn UK grass seed

Sowing your lawn seed needn’t be a daunting task. By following our simple guidance below, you’re sure to get good results every time.

Seeding a new lawn

1. Start by calculating how much lawn seed you need. We recommend for best coverage, sowing at a rate of 50-70g per square metre of lawn. Much less than this and the coverage may not be as thick and weeds can become an issue over time. It helps to have a little seed left over for any areas which get missed or damaged during the process.
2. Prepare the ground. This is arguably the most crucial step of sowing a new lawn, and time spent on this stage will help your lawn thrive for years to come. Control any weeds, remove any large stones, debris or plant matter and rake the soil to create a nice level fine tilth. At this stage, you may wish to add a pre-seeding fertiliser. This should be forked into the soil 7-10 days before sowing your lawn seed, to make sure that it has broken down properly. Once you have a level seedbed, roll or tread the area so that it is nice and firm (though not compacted like concrete). Lightly rake the area once more so you have a thin covering of soil to sow into.
3. Next, spread your seed over the area as evenly as possible. There are many spreaders available which make this processes notably easier, and a lot more accurate. However, if sowing by hand, we recommend mixing the seed with an inert substance like sand or coir, so that it’s easier to see where has been sown.
4. Lightly rake the soil once more, the seed should still be visible on the surface and not buried.
5. Roll or tread the seed back into the soil making sure that the area is firm and level. A garden roller can be used or simply tread the seed into the soil. By doing this, you ensure the seed is in good contact with the soil.
6. Finally, water your new lawn. This is best done with a very fine mist, so as not to dislodge and seed in the soil. This can be repeated daily during extended dry periods.

Overseeding existing lawns

1. If you’re patching up or refreshing an existing lawn, the process is slightly different. You should start by giving your existing lawn a close mow, usually down to the lowest setting on the mower.
2. Next, rake or scarify the lawn to open up the soil and create space for the new seeds to be sown. Use this opportunity to remove and dead grass matter or thatch, and control any weeds too.
3. To sow the seed, again it can be useful to mix the grass seed with some sand or coir to help bulk it out and see where you have been. Spread the seed by hand, or using a spreader, and then roll or tread the seed into the soil.

A few notes on when to sow grass seed

It’s important to make sure that you have adequate warmth and moisture for germination. In practice this means a soil temperature of 8-9 degrees Celsius, which is typically when the ambient air temperature is consistently in double figures. If no rain is forecast, it is always a good idea to provide irrigation before and after sowing to give the seed the best start. Generally, the best times of year for sowing are Spring & Autumn, but good results can be achieved year round as long as conditions are suitable.
