About Northern Lights

Winter Woods are the largest employer in the tiny Wisconsin town of Glidden. The company was started as a one-man operation in 1976, by a US forestry worker who supplemented his income making festive wreaths. Owner Steve Lewis employed local people to help meet demand and, wanting to be able to offer a reliable year-round income, he racked his brains for new ways to expand the business. Realising that the pinecones lying on forest floors were going to waste, he offered the best ones to American florists and designers, while the smaller or damaged ones were dipped into a special copper sulphate solution which, as any chemistry teacher can tell you, burns in pretty blues and greens. So Winter Woods manage to save pine cones from going to waste whilst offering year-round employment to their local community without chopping down any trees unnecessarily.

Please note: remove all cooking grills before using in a fire-pit-style barbecue and do not cook above them, as the colour-changing coating can be harmful if swallowed.

Approx. 30 – 40 cones per pack.

I first bought these a few years ago and had forgotten how pretty and mesmerising they are to watch in the fire. A little pricy for what they actually are

Really nice product love putting a couple on the fire very expensive for what they are and the smaller ones only last a few minutes but I’m sure I’ll end up buying more in the future

Really beautiful colours with just a couple of cones, the colours lasted much longer than we expected. Added to the atmosphere of the evening. Would definitely recommend and will buy again.

Used on a wood burner and waited for the fire to reach temperature and the first big logs to burn. Added new logs and 2 cones in front of the base of the fire and turned temperature down to very low. I was getting continuous coloured flames with logs being added an hour later. Would recommend.

We’ve bought these about three times now, perfect in your wood burning stove throwing up blue flames and making a very magical light show. Last much longer than you’d think.
Also make a great Xmas gift for the man who has everything!
    Highly recommend.

Bright colours. Lasted a long time and looked great on both open fire pit and in my wood burner.

The pine cones are of a good size and you can see that they’re liberally dusted with the salts. The salt is well stuck onto the cones so they don’t all fall off in the bag.

A very colourful addition to your fire. They certainly dd different colour when thrown on. They are short lived, we found that in under 5 minutes they had burnt away. That aside, a great novelty .
    Give them a try

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI got this to make my nights outside with the kids and family a bit different. I have only tried one (small) in a little outdoor fire, as you can see in the video it gives a nice blue and green flame after 5-10 seconds.

Can’t wait for them family nights outside and everyone’s reaction to the vibrant colours of the fire.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLove love love these.used them in an open fire with coal, and a log burner with wood. As long as there is enough heat for them to catch fire they put on a beautiful display of blue and green flames. I put about 4 or 5 medium sized ones on and we had beautiful coloured flames for around an hour. Not something i could afford to use on a regular basis, but lovely for christmas or bonfire nigh

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThese are good for the price but the colours do not last as long as another similar product that comes in packets , but as they are considerably cheaper one has to weigh up longevity against expense. I would buy agai

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersI bought these last year as a christmas present for everyone I know who has an open fire/wood burner. Without exception they all raved about these cones! I saw some in action myself and was very impressed, lovely to look at and quite mesmerising. I would say the trick is to only use two or three at a time to see the full effect and don’t place them too close together. Lovely, unusual and I’ll definitely be buying buying more since they’re a great gift.

Purchased these before for years & always a great visual experience. I ordered two recently as gifts and found one to have its plastic packaging punctured, leaking copper sulphate all over. So to anyone ordering these whether for yourself or as a gift, I advise you to check the packaging upon arrival when opening the parcel.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThese natural pine cones are bone dry and covered in copper sulphate. They burn for about 20 minutes, turning the flames in your wood burner or open fire (we have used them in a burn basket outside too) into a beautiful riot of blue and green flames. Very festive, but beautiful at any time of year. I’m back here for more, but two packets amused us for most of the winter. A bargain for the fun and entertainment they generate. We quietly slip a few into the wood burner when we have visitors, and enjoy their delight when they notice there is something unusual about the fire!

Buy some. They are lovely. However, I’d love someone to tell me definitively if it is safe to put the ash from the fire onto our compost heap after burning these: copper is death to plants, and I don’t know that it is all gone when the fire is done.
