BLACK DECKER Digital Thermal Leak Detector TLD1
BLACK DECKER Digital Thermal Leak Detector TLD1

Power Saver
Energy leaks can be avoided by simply making right choices when it comes to insulation solutions around your house. It is estimated that approximately 40 per cent of current emissions comes from the choices we make as individuals. Saving energy means less CO2 emissions and in result preserving the environment for future generations.
With annual energy costs constantly increasing, by improving the insulation and eliminating thermal leaks around our homes, we can save a significant amount of money.
The Black + Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector is an ideal product to easily identify areas where energy leaks occur.
Easy to Use
The BLACK+DECKER TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector is easy to set up and use.
Simply point the detector and shine the light on the wall in order to set the reference temperature. Then move the light around your house. When the temperature changes by 1, 5 or 10 degrees Celsius (user adjustable), the light will change to red or blue to indicate a hot or cold spot.
Multiple Applications
BLACK+DECKER TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector can be used not only to detect hidden energy leaks around doors, floors, walls, pipes, windows but also for many other tasks around the home:
– Check the temperature of surfaces you can’t touch
– Check whether your HVAC is working properly
– Diagnose engine misfires
– Check ceiling insulation around recessed lights
– Check for drafts around the fireplace
– Check that your fridge and freeze settings are correct

This is a very useful device
I wanted to know how my underfloor heating was performing . This device makes it very easy to see the temperatures of the floors in each room and confirm that the circulation of the hot water is even. Once installed underfloor heating is difficult to monitor. This device makes it easy. It is also useful for checking wall and window temperatures and comparing different parts of a room.
SO many uses, incredible!
So far i have used this to :
* Find and thus rectify thermal leaks, drafts and thermal bridging
* Check the efficiency of insulation installed ‘before and after’
* Correct those who claim the room temp is ‘too cold’ or ‘too hot’
* Check the thermostats on Lot 20 electric heaters are working correctly or not (one was totally off)
* Check that fridges and freezers in my rentals and camping F/F are food safe
* Check the thermostat on my range cooker/boiler
* Save my family from food poisoning after the cleaner inadvertently turned down the fridge temp with the Christmas turkey buzzard in there…
This is a desert island essential along with a ball of twine and a full tang knife
Great item
Identifies cool spots and drafts that I’d never even considered before so able to rectify those immediately. Love the colour light indicator that projects onto the wall to show heat losses (or increases). Superb delivery time, grateful
Seems good
Can’t verify the accuracy but it at least gives you an idea of the differences between places. All being said, not sure it’s worth buying one of these, as you probably use it once around the house and then never again.
A very useful gadget for detecting temperature drops.
It amazes me why some people give a product this good a 1 star review. At least one “reviewer” claimed it didn’t detect draughts but draughts cause cold spots and this device detects those well. Who knows how these 1 star reviewers use the product! All I can say is, set appropriately, in my case I use the centre 5oF 3.0oC setting, it works very well indeed. For the second winter running I have been using this device and identified several areas around our front window where cracked sealant was causing a significant drop in temperature, indicated by the light turning blue. A bit of new sealant and a much better result was obtained. This device is very good in my experience having owned one for at least a year.
Very easy to set up and use . Draughts under doors and round windows pin pointed very quickly
Got new windows and doors fitted and lots of problems ! got this leak detector and and was able to find exact place cold air coming in! Great piece of ki
Easy to use, pinpoint accuracy
You can literally take this out of the box and start using it; we’ll, after you have installed the battery (which comes with it). The screen display is clear and accurate [I tested it on a surface of known temperature) but even better is the coloured light that shines on the area under investigation. It changes colour as the temperature fluctuates making it a doddle to see where the cold spots are. Then, of course, all you have to do is plug them. But that’s a different story.
Cold spots identified
Tried to track down drafts in the house. Very effective indicates actual temperature and gives colour change to light spot on the area you point at. Blue cold, red hot , green ambient set temperature. Bit expensive but works as advertised
Got new double glazing installed 3 years ago and have had to have the installers out a number of times as the bedroom windows were both noisy and draughty. However they constantly fobbed me off with excuses. However having bought this detector I was able to show them exactly where the cold spots were and that there was a 4 degree difference on these spots compared to other parts of the window frames.
As a result of using this the installers are now going to replace the frames and readjust the windows as they have now accepted that they were poorly fitted.
This has saved me a ton of money (I was thinking of getting the windows ripped out and start again with another company) and hopefully once the faulty windows are fixed, I should find my energy bills go dow
4.0 out of 5 stars Works well.
I used this for finding cold drafts around double glazed windows.
Works well
Does what it claims. Unfortunately doesn’t fix the draughts though. That is still down to the user to arrange. It did find a concealed central heating pipe running down a wall behind the plasterboard that I didn’t know was there. So now I know not to be drilling holes in that part of the wall.
Does what it says it does👍
I bought this to prove that I had an unsatisfactory window fitted. …it help me prove to the window maker and fitter that the new window he supplied me was not up to modern standards re draughts etc. Perfect!
Will save you money
Amazing bit of teck this will find any draft around the home or any were else . Not only does it find a drafts it’s tells the temperature . You can even find out if you have insulation in roof space or wall’s just by pointing at wall’s if it’s stay red great if it turns blue may need further investigation great value will save you money
Esay to use.. Very clear and quick to show results.
Very accurate my wife uses it for paranormal tool when she is on a paranormal investigation for a conformation of a form on yes / no.
Very esay to use just point to where yoy want it and it shows if it is hot or cold and tells you temp on lcd screen.
I use it to check seals on windows and doors and to see where there is drafts..
Its so esay to use my 5yr old son uses it to just check whats cold or hot..
4.0 out of 5 stars USEFUL FOR EARLY DETECTION OF LEAKS AND DRAUGHTS
Has proved very useful, in conjunction with other devices, for early detection of possible leaks
Just had an extension to the house and gone open plan – but suspected insulation hadn’t been installed correctly as it didn’t feel as warm as the rest of the house and was considering underfloor heating to resolve the problem. Bought this to check if the builders had insulated the extension correctly and it turns out the extension is the warmest place in the house – all the drafts and cold air is coming from old part of the house. All I needed to do was to insulate the old part house properly – happy days!
4.0 out of 5 stars Cool flat now warm
Helped me find serval cold spots were the wind was cooling down my fla
4.0 out of 5 stars see where your heat is leaking ou
Very clear to see where hotspots and cold spots are in a room. Easy to use, seems to be accurate.
Great product and fun to use.
Was able to pick out the areas in the attic that weren’t insulated properly from room below. Also identified a draught in the bedroom were the caulk had developed a split. Really impressed with this and the different coloured lights make it fun and easy to use.
Does the job, only we didn't realise do not use on people!
Good gadget, but had to return as it was not what we needed it for… No problem with the item its self. As we didn’t realise you couldn’t use on people. So will not give it a bad review. So that’s fair.
Grea
Has been very helpful to find those cold spots in the house that require more attention. So instead of reinsulating a whole area, I can just target the small areas of cold.
A bit pricey, but will save you money in the long run targeting the cold areas
Great unit, let down by substandard battery.
Using this meter was an eye opener.A temperature gradient on internal walls was noticeable along with heat loss through keyholes and bad draught excluders. Annoyingly the supplied 9v battery was only showing 7.7v and wouldn’t fire up the mete
I bought this to check our new doors and windows for good seal, it found the leaks with ease, it showed many leaks around the frames and fittings, which did not go down well with the installer who tried to wriggle out of their obligations until I produced this tool and told them to check for themselves … A great purchase even if I only use it once its paid for itself as the contractor lost out on 1800
The product is well built, arrived quickly and I wanted to use it for tracing draughts around windows, kitchen units, doors etc. The temperature change settings are easy to understand and you set the initial temperature by simply pointing and holding the trigger on. With a little bit of practice you will find it easy to set up for the task you have. The issue is to remember when using it for things like draughts is that all internal rooms have layers of heat as all hot air rises. So if you trigger the tool at a point on the wall to set it then move the tool down 30cm it may well tell you that it is colder on the lower reading. This is not necessarily due to a draught but the ambient temperature in the room being naturally colder towards the floor. It works best if you take readings left to right of the setting temp rather than up and down. This means that you would be better running it along the bottom of a door or the windowsill rather than up and down the sides. I quickly identified areas where the colder air was in my rooms but trying to find the culprit air flow was a bit more difficult as the colder air would tend to drop which meant that I may find a cold spot but the air gap was higher up. This may sound like it’s too complicated but it honestly isn’t and with a little practice you may just be able to save a few pounds by finding where you are losing your heat. I haven’t tried to use it in the loft yet to check for gaps in my insulation but that is the next project. Enjoy.
Brilliant product. I bought it for checking on damp – using with a damp meter too. Thoroughly enjoyed myself doing the whole Mysterons routine with the light and then checking the results. Easier to see at a glance the results – more so than the damp meter used. Showed up lots of cold patches around the home. Invaluable, really. Particularly for an amateur as it’s easy to bamboozled into household repairs.
I was not expecting much as this was priced much less than similar products but it has exceeded expectations. Does exactly what it says, point it at the central heating and it glows ready, at the window it glows blue indicating a draught. Hope to use it to fix draughts in my home as my gas bill is too high, in summer when the AC is on and in winter when the central heating is on. Finally the device is high quality and feels so.
Works well - but is it worth the cost?
Yes it works fine – not sure I have learned anything I didn’t suspect already. Has confirmed that the rubber seals around some d/g doors needs replacing. For that, it’s quite an expensive purchase.
Didn’t even know this technology was available so cheaply until I stumbled across it while looking at loft insulation on Amazon. My front bedroom was always freezing even though the rest of the house was nice and warm. I’d assumed the heat was escaping through the attic and had just planned to buy loads of insulation and double up what was already there.
Thought I’d try this gun first in case it wasn’t the attic and there was a leak around the window or some insulation missing in the exterior wall. Very simple to use (although I had to go out and buy one of those little oblong batteries, didn’t even know anything used them anymore and a shame it doesn’t come with one). Set the mean temperature and the deviation then slowly move it around the walls and ceiling and watch the torch change colour as it finds cold or hot spots.
What I found was that in one corner of my bedroom ceiling there was a point that was 5 degrees lower than anywhere else! Easily rectified and instead of buying 5 rolls of insulation and doing the whole loft, I just bought one and crammed it into that corner. It was right in the eaves so I couldn’t see why that part wasn’t as well insulated as the rest, but it’s done the trick and that corer in the ceiling is only 1 degree lower than the rest now and it’s noticeably warmer.
So basically, buying this saved me money and time. Only doesn’t get full marks because of lack of battery.
I hardly need write a good review as others have noted the use of this device, but I will add a few comments.
Q: How does this device differ from a standard infra-red thermometer? Why not just use one of those to identify cold bridges, leaks etc?
A: you could, but it would be much harder. This device allows you to keep your eye on the area you are measuring and when the beam of light cast upon it changes colour you will know that the temperature measured has varied by half a degree, or 3 degrees, or 5, depending on the switch setting. Moving between these tolerances you can soon build up an accurate picture of where the cold and hot spots are and what might be “false triggers”. You COULD do that with a standard digital thermometer, but the rapid changes of 0.1 degree would be hard to keep an eye on and to mentally collate into a picture of varying temperature. This device makes that much easier. That said, it does still require some thought to interpret what you are seeing, combined with altering the tolerance as you work.
Thoughts on technique:
1. If you are for example checking a wall for cold spots (e.g. cavity wall bridges) then you need to sweep horizontally across the internal wall with the reference temperature set for that height on the wall. Sweeping up and down will OF COURSE show a marked (and irrelevant) change in the temperature of the wall because the top of the wall will be warmer than the foot due to hot air in your room rising.
2. When tracking draughts, one needs to hone in on them, keeping in mind that a draught, say along the floor, will cool the floor for a distance. Thus a reading of a cold floor at spot A might not indicate any problem with the floor itself, but that cold air is flowing over it from location B (the hole) a few feet or inches away. The direction of flow of the cold air can be surprising and counter intuitive, especially if you have an open fire, stove or blown air system in your house which can push and pull the draught in odd ways.
3. Moving between the tolerances of 0.5 and 3 degrees is important. Too fine a tolerance and you will get distractingly false colour changes i.e. “false positives”. Using the 3 deg tolerance might miss something. I would like to have seen a setting on the machine for 2 deg. That small change is important. For example: in my house, the areas around the windows have micro-leaks. This seems to cause a cooling close to the air leak of about 2 deg in winter. If I set the tolerance to 3 deg, I will miss that leak spot entirely. If I set it to 0.5 it will pick it up, but the colour indicator will be changing rapidly anyway as I move across areas that are not really a problem. The solution seems to be to move between the two tolerances while repeatedly scanning the area and take note of the pattern of change until you can hone in on the causal area, finally confirming the coldest spot (the leak) with the finest setting.
Q: can you use this as a standard thermometer?
A: only up to 150 deg C. So it’s no use for measuring the oven temp or the jam pot.
Good investme
Surprisingly good at spotting temperature variations from draughts and works well from a distance. I purchased to try to locate central heating pipes buried in 75mm deep screed. While a bit hit and miss picking up hot spots, the device gave a good enough clue to location. I doubt that professional devices or employing specialist contractors costing many times more would have done much better and definitely worth the low cost as a first go to see if diy works.
In the absence of a proper thermal imaging device (costing thousands) this works very well. It’s also great fun to use. The only downside is that you can only see a bit of the scanned area at a time (unlike a camera) so you have to build up a mental picture of the cold spots it’s detected. It also takes about 0.5 second to detect changes so for example you can’t do a rapid sweep and see instant colour changes.
Despite this it’s a very useful gadget and very reasonably priced.
Brilliant little tool
Very useful little tool for anyone who wants to airtight there place. This gives you a very good idea where the cold spots are and very easy to use too. Only thing is that it does not come with a battery.
A cheap and easy to use tool to get the house prepared for ...
While it does not show the draughts it does highlight the cold spots clearly allowing you to plan a remedy. The lower half of my wall is much colder than the top half. (dampness or problems with my cavity wall insulation? we shall see).A cheap and easy to use tool to get the house prepared for next winter. This item should pay for itself in reduced energy cost with in the year.
Very useful
Used it for my windows and walls and it showed me the cold spots.. Its very good in that you can see where the cold spots or heat spots are, though I would not use the readings as factual only as guidance, I measured a boiling kettle it measured 80 ‘c on device, whilst my standard thermometer said 98’c (after bubbling stopped). so bit of a difference. But on other items they measured the same temperature. Therefore, useful as a guide.
This is a temperature gun but has a colour code to make it really easy to see where you are getting cold drafts in. I went around my house and found all the cold spots, did a lot of draft proofing and the difference in the temperature of the house is very noticeable and also the boiler is working less often so i’m saving money. Only problem is once you’ve done the job then there isn’t much need for it although I did use it to check the temperature of my radiators to see if they needed a power flush.
Now in the process of attacking the worst of the draught positions and cold spots
Bougt this to hunt down draughts and cold spots. After using it during the cold spell just gone, the only conclusion I’ve come to is to knock down the house and rebuild! Certainly found all the draughts and cold spots in the house walls and junctions that I thought were sealed against the wind and temperatures. Despite having two annuluses in the walls one of which has insulation infill I was surprised to discover that all that glitters is not gold. This Black and Decker found the lot. Now in the process of attacking the worst of the draught positions and cold spots. For anyone who thinks that their houses that have passed the official “leak” test are OK, I say get one of these B&D units and be surprised.
Easy to use and provides some surprises when I scan the outside walls of the house(from the inside). One downside is the poor viewing angle of the screen, and I guess the battery life will be fairly limited, but that still has to be confirmed. I reckon it will pay for itself in a year or two after checking the whole house and implementing localised fixes to insulation and draughts.
Very well built, I bought the Thermal leak detector to find what was causing draughts around my house I found them and am working on sorting them out.
I find that I am just fascinated by this and just used it for silly things afterwards as I like these kinds of gadgets so I think it was money well spent and does exactly as it says on the box. I found the instructions clear and concise even though I didn’t really follow them it was just so easy to set up and use. Happy it came with a 9v battery too.
Useful Gadge
Happy with this purchase. It helped identify cold spots under coving that was easy enough to fix with some polyfilla. Showed just how much heat I was losing under a curtain that didn’t quite reach the floor which has now got me thinking about a thermal blind for the window in question. Showed me hot spots too. Also showed me where I wasn’t losing much heat which meant that I saved time by not having to take action in those places.
I think it’s worth the money. Very easy to use and it came with a battery included. I’m sure family members will be keen to borrow this too.
Great value.
It’s very efective for thermal leak detection.
The red/green/blue light makes it really easy to spot the more pronounced temperature changes.
Just be aware that it might not be very accurate on the absolute temperature levels and the range of detectable temperatures is not as large as on other thermometers (but it’s wonderful on the range of temperatures you can find in any home).
entertaining
you calibrate it on a wall or something and then go around pointing it at other places and see the light go red/blue depending on if it is hotter or colder. gives a readout of temperature as focused, seems accurate but the wood stove was a bit toasty for it I think :-). worked out straightaway that the big loser in my house is the single-glazed windows in the doors — haven’t fixed that yet but still a month or so to go before it gets properly cold. Have now loaned to my mate who uses it to decide where to put insulation first in his new house, he seems to enjoy it too — but once you’ve been around the house a few times there’s not much more to see. Another mate described one with a viewer that you could look through and see a handprint on a tree at 20 paces — this one doesn’t do that.
Spend hours annoying the other half
Useful to aid detection of cold spots as the color code – Red, Green, Blue beam shows the differences while you look at the target rather than watching the display. Found a fixed a few cold spots and use the standard IR function for checking home brew temps without contact.
Just a shame you can’t turn off the light in normal mode, dog goes crazy chasing it.
Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detecto
I moved into a house which we found to be very cold. The Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector has helped me identify the cold spots in the house and I was able to focus on these areas to eliminate the draughts /install insulation etc. I recorded the temperture difference before and after making any changes to ensure my efforts worked. You carry out the checks yourself so there are no expensive tradesmen to pay.
Reasonably cheap and easy to operate. The B&D Leak Detector was bought from Ideabright Ltd. (on Amazon) and was received in the North of Scotland within 48 hours (No, the north of Scotland is not an Island and we should not incurr additional postage charges for being on an island, which we did not from Ideabright Ltd. Thank you for this.)
In short; a great little product, fun to use, well worth the money in preventing heat loss or just for checking the surface temperatures of your walls, double glazing, finding draughts from damaged door seals etc.
Very useful product but instructions are useless.....
So the instructions are pretty useless but after a few minutes playing its easy to work out whats going on and how to make the most of this device.
Simply point at something e.g a wall and set a reference point for the colour coding. Move the beam around and it changes colour to indicate if its colder or warmer.
Even if you ignore the colour coding, which is just a helpful guide, you’ve got a big clear LCD screen which tells you the temperature of a given point.
This makes it easy to find leaks in your home around windows, ceilings, floors that need insulation improving. Used well you could make monetary saving using this payback in no time at all.
Simple, easy to use and much cheaper than a thermal imaging camera!
Interesting and fun, not so easy to aim
This product s interesting to use to find cold spots etc, but it’s quite difficult to “aim”. After having used it a few times it was aparent that depending on how far away you are from the surface the sensor could be above or below the coloured dot. Also the unit only tells you the measured surface temperature in relation to the initial reference temp, which in itself is only in relation to ambient temperature, i.e so you can’t point at a surface and find out it’s actual temperature, so if your sensor was in a room with an ambient temp of 20c and you measured a wall which is 18c the unit will show a refernce temp of -2c. I found it a bit of fun to use but not convinced it helped me to find any real air leaks or cold spots that i could address.
Way above expectations
This is much more than a leak detector. Indeed it is wrongly labelled. It is basically an extremely accurate thermometer that tests the temperature of surfaces, including glass!!
It identified exactly a cold area on my wood floor that I did not realise I had. Now covered with a large rug, the room is now cosy. The old patio doors were much colder than I realised and replacement is expedited.
You can survey your entire house and ID hot and warm spots. For best result do it when the outside temperature is very low; with and without wind. I look forward to using it is out garden and house thermometer at all times of the year
This may be the best value and quality product I have ever bought. It makes all non-medical/cooking thermometers redundant, especially as it is more accurate and instantaneous in measurement.
And it is fun to use… try checking out the surface of your partner.
Thanks to all the five star reviewers who persuaded me to buy this
Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector.
It arrived on time. It appears to indicate where my underfloor heating pipes run beneath a ceramic tiled floor. Some variations in my walls need further investigation but I have little doubt that the detector is probably correct. I need to study the instructions more closely. Then the bigger problem of what do I gain if I do something about improving my home has to be answered. I will not know until I have made any changes. Another decision to be made.
So in all it may be a cheap but accurate expensive “Boy’s Toy” which can be shown to my technical minded friends.
Glad that I bought it however.
Useful for finding cold spots & draughts
Very easy to use. First set the comparison temperature to 0.5 degree C, 3.0 degrees C or 5.5 degrees C. Then point it to a wall press the on button & it records & sets a temperature to which you get a comparison on other walls or windows. The laser on the first wall shows up green & if you point it to a colder wall it shows up blue. A warmer wall shows up red.Seemples.
