As guitar builders, we are constantly looking for new ways to provide our clients with affordable options for customizing their guitars. Over the past few years, we have been using vinyl wrap with very good results, mostly on pick guards or to make a custom graphic. One of our most popular options has always been carbon fiber, but not all carbon fiber look vinyl wrap is created equal. Some of them just are not sticky enough to make the 180 turn around the edges cleanly. We decided to try this particular vinyl, and had quite excellent results. The client loved the guitar, and loved saving the 100 bucks that a carbon fiber pickguard would’ve cost. Good stuff

Decent stuff. I didn’t have much trouble installing on flat surfaces (it’s just a sticker at that point). It struggled a bit with curved surfaces, especially aggressive curves. Heat helps alot, but I wasn’t able to deform it quite as much as some other vinyl i’ve tried. The pattern deformed a bit too, but that’s also expected when stretching it.

The pattern isn’t bad. From a few feet away, it does a convincing imitation of real CF. I don’t think it will fool anyone up close, but it’s at least good enough given the competition for vinyl carbon.

Nice product overall, if you’re on a budget.

Rarely do I come across a ‘cheap’ vinyl that acts like that of a large manufacturer. I was very pleased to find myself absolutely wrong when I prejudged this carbon fiber based on its backing paper.

This vinyl does a good job emulating carbon fiber. As an installer I had no issues applying to a flat surface. Subtle stretch does cloudy the vinyl a bit, so best used on flat to subtle curvature. It does have a semi matte feel to it, its not glossy, and maybe this is a non surface treated vinyl (may mean it won’t last long in sun/exterior of vehicle — I’ll come back in a couple of months to update outdoor performance).

It applies as if there’s a micro channeled adhesive, meaning air bubbles can be pushed out. I don’t know if this is a pressure or heat assisted adhesive, but after a day it’s holding tight. I did apply, remove and re-apply while testing initial install. I’d give the adhesive a solid score.

For the DIYer, this initially appears as though it’ll work on their smaller projects. Overall, I’d still hedge my bets on a more expensive ‘name brand’ until a multi-month test is complete.

Got this to use for decals, it took a few trial and test to find the perfect setting to cut it at but it sticks great and is pretty thick compared to some other vinyls I have tried. Looks great on decals.

I used this on a metal trim in my van that I was able to cut to the same size width so that it would cover it and look nicer. Well that’s exactly what it did and looks pretty nice. Its a little thin so I hope it lasts but so far its alright. Works well for my needs

I recently purchased the Carbon Fiber Vinyl Wrap Black for my car and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of this product. The finish on the panels is sleek and stylish, giving my car a premium and expensive look. The carbon fiber design is very authentic and realistic, and it looks great on my car.

The best part about this vinyl wrap is that it holds really well on the car panels. I was a little apprehensive about applying it myself, but the installation process was surprisingly easy. The wrap is flexible and easy to manipulate, so I was able to apply it smoothly and without any bubbles or creases. It adhered to my car’s surfaces with ease, and it has remained in place without any signs of peeling or lifting.

Another great thing about this vinyl wrap is that it is very durable. My car is exposed to harsh weather conditions on a regular basis, but this wrap has held up really well. It has not faded or deteriorated in any way, even after several weeks of use. It is also very easy to clean and maintain, which is a big plus.

For about $11 (with 10% off coupon, at the time of this review), you can get the San Tao DS Carbon Fiber Vinyl Wrap Black (13ft x 1ft). The roll seems fine, with no notable quality issues. It’s not really what I’m used to, so I don’t know if I’d use it for exterior application (maybe for trim?). Still, adhesion and workability under heat seem average. The look and feel of the simulated carbon fiber “twill” weave is ok, and best observed from at least a couple feet away. If you want a more convincing look, you’ll have to pay more.

I like this film for small items like phone cases and other items. The film is pretty workable and has enough tack to attach to most smooth surfaces.

Compared to vivid or 3m film I would say this one is much thinner. My concern there is how well it might hold up to daily contact. For that reason I decided not to use it on my car trim. The look is nice, but the texture is a little too shallow and matte.

Overall this is great for small projects and surfaces and for learning how to use films with a small amount of investment.

I’ve used a 3M kit, same exact material pattern, onto my ’15 X5 and got great results. Though on very hard turns and sharp edges the sheets actually undo themselves and peeled just a slight. But overall, without utilizing any solvent or adhesives, I’d say those held up well. Now onto these…

Upon arrival, first inspection reveals a distinct texture difference between these and the 3M sheets. The carbon fiber texturization is much more pronounced on the 3M sheet where as this replica has a much shallower 3-D effect on the carbon fiber contour. I do not know if there’s a standard for “tall” and “short” carbon fiber layering, and if there is, then that may explain what I see. If not, then I must say this set has a much shallowing fiber overlay effect than what you’ll find on a 3M sheet. Second observation I found is that the overall sheet thickness is about half what I’ll find on the 3M sheet. Having said that, these sheets must have used a tough substrate to keep everything together because I did try to bring this sheet around some sharp corners that 3M can withstand; well, surprisingly, this sheet also held up. So it’s toughness is probably not bad at all. Third observation I have is that this sheet has way less “tack” than the 3M sheet. So you’ll need to work your item surface clean and lots of alcohol passes in order to get some real tack for it to stick well without using adhesives of some sort. I personally want to make sure that I’ll have freedom to remove the wrap and go for something else without having to do too much prep work on the next round. So I tend to skip all adhesive use as much as I can. Last thing I’ll mention is that the sheet does allow some stretch, but not as good as a 3M sheet can stretch and still maintain full carbon fiber integrity. This sheet, upon some hard stretching to catch on corners yielded a slight discoloration. It’s manageable and not so bad if you know what level of deformation you’re working with. But I must say 3M sheets do a much better job at toleration such deformations.

Overall, for how cheap it is, I’d say this is good enough to work with. But I still like the deeper and more pronounced textures that 3M sheets exhibit. The pattern on this sheet gives an almost flat appearance, so choose base on your preference.
