Worked fine. Data speeds of about 10MB/s (perfectly acceptable for DVD)
In a nutshell:
Things I liked:
+ Can’t fault the performance – it burnt a DVD fine when I used it. Didn’t drop the connection, it just worked.
+ Price is cheaper than a branded DVD drive…
Things I didn’t like:
– …but not that much more. A Hitachi-LG drive was only a fiver more (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01H3QNMHQ/)
– Don’t be fooled by this being USB 3.0 – this makes absolutely no difference. You are speed-limited by the slowest component, which is the DVD technology itself. 8x DVD speed is about 10MB/s, a quarter of what USB 2.0 can deliver. So having a USB 3.0 plug on it has zero impact on the speed you’ll get from this.
Do I recommend it?
Yes, but only if you don’t want to go over 20. If it were me, I’d pay the extra fiver and go for a branded one, but there’s no guarantee that is any better and this one does work absolutely fine.
Plug and Play
Take it out of the box, plug it into a USB port, and off you go. I was watching a DVD in minutes, and burning a CD shortly afterwards. In the days of PCs not having DVD drives built in, this is a very handy item.
Good but issues with connecting to macbook pro
The item does work and works well for what I need it for. The separate wire didn’t seem to work so confused as to why it’s there. The lead that was pre-attached to the device worked when plugged into to a USB- USB-C converter but wouldn’t work when directly plugged in with the USB-C adapter. Therefore it works for a MacBook Pro 2020 but may take a bit of trial and error.
Claims supported
This DVD player does all that the makers claim that it will do. On that basis, and being very happy with such a low price for it, I am happy to give it 5 stars. Yes, the USB interface cord is short but that hasn’t affected my needs.
Does the job intended
It works perfectly well, although the USB connecting lead is quite short and has made it a little tricky to find a convenient place for the drive to sit while using it with my tower PC.
As said on the tin, this is a no nonsense usb dvd player that works right out of the box. My only complaint is that when in use, the sound of the disc spinning is quite loud, perhaps loud enough to make using this with a laptop that has quiet speakers an unenjoyable experience. Aside from that, I’d recommend it.
usb dvd drive
This unit is a satisfactory replacement for the malfunctioning in built dvd drive on my laptop. However I did find that audio files are played with some hesitancy. This could be a property of the software I used to play audio dvd tracks.
External DVD playe
The unit is compact and lightweight. It is a plug and play unit which is easy to use, even for someone who is not an IT expert. The only issue, being really critical, is that the cable would not fit flush in the space under the unit, which meant the unit ‘wobbled’ a bit when on a flat surface.
Simple and easy to use
I bought this device to enable me to transfer some old CDs onto a memory stick via my PC. Did the job brilliantly. Great little purcahse and good value for money.
Not so simple
Despite the description on the Amazon site it was not simply a case of plug in and go, additional software had to be purchased and installed before it would work with Windows 10. Once that was accomplished it worked satisfactorily.
Small, lightweight drive. But!!
This DVD/CD drive is small & lightweight, but the cable is much too short, although easy for storage, it is necessary to use a male to female USB extension cable to enable it to be located on a nearby flat surface. Luckily, I already had one.
It is also necessary to use the supplied USB cable to power the device from the mains on older laptop computers when playing a disc, otherwise your laptop will display the message ‘power surge on hub port’, and drive will not work.
Apart from these drawbacks, it works fine.
USB 3.0 External DVD Drive
This is a useful accessory for owners of laptops, etc which have no built in DVD drive. It operates via a USB cable and no external power source is needed. It is compatible with Windows 10. My only criticism is the very short integral USB cable supplied. Very good value though.
Works! Pretty quiet! Card reader features and double USB ports!
It arrived within only a few days! It works very well under Windows 10. The drive recommends VLC player which was already pre-installed on my computing device. It is a pretty quiet drive, too for its price class. It didn’t need any extra drivers to be installed. Item is exactly as pictured. A bargain for those who need extra USB ports while using an external drive and card reader features. I haven’t tried burning any DVD’s yet but it works perfect with DVD films and tutorials on DVD. It was the right decision for me, so far, as it seems. The packaging is rather straight forward in a simple box, nothing fancy. Also, comes wrapped in bubble wrap.
Excellent if stays reliable
Did it’s job for a while Then became erratic Was going to return it Then Sod’s law stepped gave it one more chance and it started behaving properly So I now use it regularly and it’s doing an excellent job fingers crossed
Having recently gotten myself another pc/vr set up I found myself in the need of a dvd drive, but as the tower I purchased had none, and I had used all available sata connections for my hdds I was left with the choice of some hdd jiggery poker or an external.
So I went for this with it having the dvd and also built in memory card readers, that meant the plethora of adapters and such could be retired
Powered off a single usb2 connection it was surprisingly plug and play for 90 percent of functions, plug it in, get the chime (win 10) and it shows right up, along with empty memory card ports.
It’s very thin, slides right under the base of my tower when not in use.
In an age if 24x dvd burning its a shame it only offers 8x, but I remember paying 100+ for a single speed burner so it’s not remotely a issue..
Reads all dvds fine original and burned, it initially makes a little noise but soon quiets down.
The fact it can be connected via USB c is good, future proof to a degree.
For 20 quid it’s spot on for me, for all my old games, softwares and photos backed up and the portable aspect means the 1 drive will serve all 3 towers in my home.
Happy with this
With internal CD/DVD player/recorders becoming less common in PCs and Laptops, there is an even greater need for these USB external ones, and at around 20 this burner fills the gap.
This unit has a short captive connecting lead underneath with both a USB-A plug and USB Type-C. As well as the optical drive it has 2 x USB-A sockets an SD and a micro SD reader. The latter sockets have no spring stop so just push them to the end.
The disk drive, USB ports and both SD and micro SD sockets worked fine with Windows 10 OS, but if your connecting device is unstable or in need of more power, a micro USB socket on the back, and a lead is supplied. This means you connect both to the USB 3 and USB 2 sockets on your PC/Laptop.
To play DVDs I downloaded VLC media player and this unit played the DVDs without a problem.
I like this and it’s a good price for what you get.
You would need a software for this to work on Windows 10 but It doesn’t say in product description. With lots of Google search we managed to get it work on a Dell laptop with windows 10 professional but it took time. So be prepared, it is not just plug and go!
Looks OK but GOSH! When I switched it on for the first time to install something from a CD drive into my laptop, i thought a helicopter was about to take off! what a noise and emission of heat!
Very short lead from drive to pc.
Seems to work well but a quite serious design flaw is the length of the cable from the drive to the pc/laptop. I have connected it to my desktop but the only place it will then sit is directly on top of the tower which is rather annoying as that means I have to stand up each time I want to change the disc. Bought to let me download my music cds to the pc.
I opened the box for this Mobile DVD-RW drive and was impressed by how it looks.
The case could be solid black and boring like a lot of others however it has a night highlight from the rubber trim around the edge which also helps to hold it without it slipping out of your hand.
The case itself is plastic in construction but this helps to keep the weight down and it has 4 rubber feet underneath to keep it in place on your desk.
The USB 3 cable is pre-attached and secured under the unit in a channel made for it meaning you don’t have to wrap the wire around it when storing it which is a nice touch. This positive could also be a negative for some as it means the wire is relatively short and out of the back so it may limit it’s placement on a desktop computer unless you used an extension cable. For a laptop however it’s ideal.
I connected the drive to a free USB port on my laptop (windows 10) and it was recognised straight away and showed as a DVD drive almost instantly requiring no driver install as you would expect.
I popped a software CD inside the draw and it was seen by the computer straight away and I was able to install the software with no glitches. The process was also very quiet with no excessive noise from the drive.
I also placed a blank DVD into the drive and wrote a number of files to it, again with no problem, no excessive noise and no errors.
I have run a test against the drive using Nero InfoTool 5.3.3.0, the results of which are provided below and it supports all of the expected featured. I’ve also uploaded a picture of the information which is a bit easier to read.
Pro’s
It does what it’s supposed to do and I had no problems with reading or writing to optical media
The rubber edging looks nice and is practical
The USB cable is included and folds away
USB 3
Cons
The length of the cable may be a problem for desktop computer users without an extension.
