This is a bog standard tape measure, decent ‘girth’ if you will, and seems to be strong when floating across a wide gap. The one thing that stands out for me at least is the way it locks, instead of your traditional tape where you will be free moving until you push the ‘stopper’ down stopping the tape from moving to an extent, this tape measure is permanently ‘stopped’ (you can pull it in/out manually, but it will hold itself otherwise) until you press the release button which will allow the tape to move freely. Interesting design, maybe not something a contractor would be interested in but seems stable enough and should last. My one concern would be the mechanism loosening over time, which may mean the tape becomes unusable in some circumstances.
Bought this to replace the same item which had fallen (after several years of use) quite a distance onto hard concrete and didn’t survive. I love the fact that the metal tape stays out until you press the button to rewind. So much better than the usual ‘slide to lock’ mechanism of other tape measures, which always fail after a few uses.
I had one of these for about 12 years before my kids got hold of it and slowly but surly it was harder to get the tape back in it’s housing, it had a hard life with regular use for replaced it with another one and would never think twice about buying more, if you look after tools they can last a long time.
I’m not going do an expert product review or a review from a carpenter stand point. For me a measure is a measure. But I can see that some are better than others. For me this is 5 star even if it was a bad measure for a professional carpenter.
It’s very sturdy and would imagine taking a whack off a hammer to break it. Has an automated locking mechanism which I didn’t know had so was pleasantly surprised. You pull out the tape and locks in place, great. Very easy to lay out to measure say room sizes. And I was very happy with the price I paid
Overall it’s great for the price and the auto lock feature proved to be invaluable at times, I just wish it had lasted longer but five years ain’t too bad considering the use it got.
Arrived quick and well packed
Good quality 10mt tape at a great price.
Easy to read with a good lock feature that you release once measurements have been taken,no more tape falling off the end and rolling back in.
Would buy agai
10m rule nice size but not easy runner when you undo lock you have to shake rule to get it to retract which when it does goes it slides quickly ,so that’s the down size. But needed in hurry when old rule snapped.
Like the price
The lock mechanism is useless unless your using it on the floor or work bench, it’s a bit of a pain when working overhead and your holding the tape and trying to mark off.
Nice large markings.
The mouth of the tape port gapes open as the two halves of the casing part due to a faulty casing screw when you reel in the tape fast…..what happens is that the tape end hits the opening very hard. So need to be careful and slow down when reeling in.
This has a nice, rubbery feel to it. It pulls out smoothly and stays out, until you push the button – then it retracts very quickly…. but do that too much and the end will break off – slow it with your hand. My first one broke after just a few months of very occasional use. No arguments over a refund though.
I’ve been more careful with the replacement, I just have to resist the temptation!
I found this a very enjoyable, well researched read. My only criticism is that, chronologically, it went off on a slight tangent at times. I would have appreciated more about his childhood experiences with “the music in his head” as well, but all in all a highly recommended book. Interesting photos also!
The tape itself is clearly marked in both cm and inches, although it is not as thick as I would choose if I was using it a lot. It doesn’t have to extend very far before the tape bends making measuring any longer spans more difficult, and possibly even needing a second person to help. If I was going to be using it a lot I would look for something with a stronger tape.
Overall, though, for the price it makes a good occasional use tape measure and I would repeat my purchase in a similar situation.
It’s the first one I’ve owned that has a bit of resistance as you extend it, due to the fact that by default it doesn’t retract. It’s quite good actually, as when hooked around a wall edge for example, it’s much easier to keep it in place when running the tape horizontally. It may drop when it comes loose, but doesn’t zoom back with a nail-twanging slap. You simply press the button to retract, which has the advantage of keeping your thumb out of the way at the same time.
So it’s cheap, does the job and it actually easier to use than conventional ones.
Can’t believe I only paid 99p for this! I moved to a new house recently and didn’t have my own tape measure so got this cheap one off Amazon, thinking I wouldn’t need it that much anyway. Turns out I’ve used it more than expected, and glad I have this one. It feels solid and well made, unlike the tape measures from hardware chain stores I had in my old place. The tape stays out when pulled and the button is used to retract it, unlike others I’ve used where the button locks it in position. This way is much more convenient, IMO. Probably not an ideal choice for a busy work site, but great for the average home DIYer.
