This is a bog standard tape measure, decent ‘girth’ if you will, and seems to be strong when floating across a wide gap. The one thing that stands out for me at least is the way it locks, instead of your traditional tape where you will be free moving until you push the ‘stopper’ down stopping the tape from moving to an extent, this tape measure is permanently ‘stopped’ (you can pull it in/out manually, but it will hold itself otherwise) until you press the release button which will allow the tape to move freely. Interesting design, maybe not something a contractor would be interested in but seems stable enough and should last. My one concern would be the mechanism loosening over time, which may mean the tape becomes unusable in some circumstances.
Bought this to replace the same item which had fallen (after several years of use) quite a distance onto hard concrete and didn’t survive. I love the fact that the metal tape stays out until you press the button to rewind. So much better than the usual ‘slide to lock’ mechanism of other tape measures, which always fail after a few uses.
I had one of these for about 12 years before my kids got hold of it and slowly but surly it was harder to get the tape back in it’s housing, it had a hard life with regular use for replaced it with another one and would never think twice about buying more, if you look after tools they can last a long time.
I’m not going do an expert product review or a review from a carpenter stand point. For me a measure is a measure. But I can see that some are better than others. For me this is 5 star even if it was a bad measure for a professional carpenter.
It’s very sturdy and would imagine taking a whack off a hammer to break it. Has an automated locking mechanism which I didn’t know had so was pleasantly surprised. You pull out the tape and locks in place, great. Very easy to lay out to measure say room sizes. And I was very happy with the price I paid
I bought this in 2016 and today it finally broke, the tip of the tape (part where the hook is attached) completely sheered off when retracting so no hope of repair. It’s a shame as I liked this tape measure, it served it’s purpose well in countless tasks over the years, only needed to take it apart to bend the leaf spring for the auto lock once as it was slipping, however it had been beginning to slip again recently.
Overall it’s great for the price and the auto lock feature proved to be invaluable at times, I just wish it had lasted longer but five years ain’t too bad considering the use it got.
I needed a long tape measure after the builders we had accidentally walked off with mine and the one I had left was too short to go the length of my yard. This 10m Rolson tape measure has an Autolock feature which works in the opposite way to most tape measures. Usually a tape measure draws back in straight away unless locked. However, in this case the tape is locked by default, and only retracts when the big yellow button is pressed. I think this could be a good feature. Unfortunately, the auto-lock is quite weak, and so often the tape slowly slides back in, even without the button pressed.
The tape itself is clearly marked in both cm and inches, although it is not as thick as I would choose if I was using it a lot. It doesn’t have to extend very far before the tape bends making measuring any longer spans more difficult, and possibly even needing a second person to help. If I was going to be using it a lot I would look for something with a stronger tape.
Overall, though, for the price it makes a good occasional use tape measure and I would repeat my purchase in a similar situation.
