I discovered that most USB-RS232 interfaces are only 3-wire. This means that they support only software handshaking between the devices. I needed hardware handshaking, and this product did the job perfectly. It just plugged in to a USB port on my Linux laptop, and I was able to reliably exchange files with my ancient EPROM programmer. Finally – a product that simply works!

Great piece of kit and enables my husband to connect a very old device to his laptop.

From his feedback connectivity was instant and seamless. He loves the fact it plug and play so no downloading software and overall it does exactly what it’s meant to do and very well.

Good value for money and he would happily recommend.

This DriverGenius 1-Port USB to RS232 (DB9) Serial Converter is great for connecting to analogue devices in my work place. The indicator light on the serial port connector allows me to track the activity of any data transfers happening, which I find to be very useful. It has a very nice design and is quite impressive.

Use this cable to connect a PC/laptop to a device using RS232, such as legacy hardware.

As a bonus, this cable has LEDs so you can see which data channels are active.

A little expensive, but gets the job done.

This converter proved an ideal tool for communicating with my serial RS232 equipment using the USB-A port on my laptop. It made managing scanners, sensors, and similar equipment quite manageable. The range of parity modes offered flexibility and the data bit options enhanced compatibility with different devices. Its ability to run without an external power adapter, drawing power from a USB port, was a key convenience. It fitted well into diverse applications – server rooms, laboratories, andmore.

I was delighted with this! It allowed me to use my 10-12-year-old equipment with no problems. It worked reliably, and it’s a solid and well-built USB to RS232 adapter. The communication with the devices was as expected and did exactly what I needed. Would highly recommend it.

I have an interest in retro gaming and tech. So I have a lot of old stuff that use serial that from time to time would like to connect to something more modern. Having used one of their serial adapters before I thought I’d pick up this latest one.

The cable comes packed in a branded box, Inside you have the cable and a small guide. It’s pretty well made with LEDs on the RS232 port. Plugging it into a Windows 10 PC the adapter is recognised and the baud and IRQ address can be change in the settings. I hooked this up to a couple of devices and it appears to work fine. Bear in mind though this might not be the case for everything. Some devices will need the correct software and may not recognise the port. Also some devices may require specific hardware standards that may not be in the device.

A good solution to most serial devices.

The device comes neatly boxed; the cable is about one metre long. Overall the build quality is good although on the unit I received there was a screw that was not doing its job and needed some slight attention.

Be aware there are two models of this connector: one with a USB-A connection and one with a USB-C connection. Obviously you need the right one for the device you want to use.

When using, I needed to connect the USB first to the computer to install the drivers. If you have an older computer there is a link given in the instructions for downloading as appropriate. Once done, you connect the serial end.

This is a useful piece of equipment if you want to use a device with older style serial ports and you might have to negotiate a few hoops to get it all to behave properly. With older equipment, you do need to ensure compatibility.

Whilst the price is a little more than one would like, it caters to a specialist market (ie, for use with older equipment) so the demand will be less than if it were mainstream. Taking that into account, it costs what it costs. I’m curious to see if I can connect successfully to an old Brother computerised sewing machine and look forward to a happy afternoon of trial and success.

This adapter allows an old RS232 device to work on a new technology system or network.

The DriverGenius UC2324 1-Port USB to RS232 (DB9) Serial Converter is light and compact, but it packs a consistent transfer rate that is ideal for most communication needs. It’s simple to get up and running in minutes with plug-and-play installation. This adapter’s nine-pin data transfer LEDs offer a visual signal, allowing users to quickly identify changes in signal status.

Furthermore, the availability of this adapter in a USB-A connector would be highly helpful for maintaining seamless connectivity between older versions of electronic devices in order to keep up with faster computers or larger networks.

Overall, the adapter appears to be a very useful unit, through to its fast data transfer rates and easy monitoring indicators.

In the tech-laden world we inhabit, I have to interface with a range of devices, some of which are still clinging to legacy connections. This little converter has eased my worries, allowing me to link up with older RS232 equipment from my laptop’s USB port.

This is a really good adaptor, I have had a few over the years and this one seems to be of really good quality. I particularly like the LED indicators on the plug and is compatible with win11 out of the box. So far this adaptor has worked perfectly, I still have a few switches, and alarm system (programming) that use serial for local connection and this hasn’t had an issue working with any of them.

Driverless install on Windows 10 and 11 as tested here. Plug and play.

I have a few older interfaces that require a serial connector and they can be very fussy. I’ve always kept an old laptop purely for the purpose of having a serial interface. I’ve used to to write custom maps to my VAG car and to recode the instrument cluster. I tested this on my car to recode my cluster options and it work fine. I haven’t tried it to upload a new map to the ECU though just because I haven’t had need to. I’d probably give it a try if needed, but if you ruin an ECU it’s sometimes a big money item with rarer cars.

Under Windows this reported back as a PL2303GC chip by Prolific. It’s a somewhat common chip so reasonably tried and tested. The leds give you some reassuring feedback too.

If you microprocessors a lot and have need of such a cable then this is a fairly cost effective option. I’m deducting a single star because ideally I’d like a longer braided cable. For me this will get used infrequently, so will be gently coiled in a drawer and the peace of mind that a more sturdy cable would give would be welcomed.

This USB serial adapter is one-up on the usual offerings, as it has a set of LEDs (blue) built into the housing, so can see the receive (Rx) and transmit (Tx) activity, as well as how the control lines are set: DTR and RTS for the computer side and from the modem side DSR, DCD, CTS and RI. The DriverGenius works well on my Mac, using the Serial 2 application.

This is a great bit of legacy computer connexion equipment which basically means that you can plug into a USB socket and end up with a serial port which due to the fact that most current PC’s don’t have an RS232 port you would sometimes struggle and this solves that issue.

Found this very useful for Arduino development, where I needed to communicate with a device over a serial link, I was able to monitor the tx and rx signals in realitime. The LEDs are clear and easy to view

This is it’s USP, aside from that, it’s a good quality, well made usb to serial converter.

Definitely a quick solution to the problem of new PC’s with older devices that still need a serial port for programming etc.

Basically plug it into the PC’s USB socket, on Windows 11 the driver was found and install automatically and the LEDs on the serial port end gave a few flashes as it got installed as a COM port.

Checking deeper in Windows Device Manager it identifies as having a Prolific PL2303GC chip, installed as COM3 and looking in device Manager also gives a good choice of bit rates etc.

    No problems at all

For electronic hoarders like me who finds it hard to part with old retro and legacy things, this is a fantastic little device that brings back old options. It works well but I do have to state I only tested it on Windows 11 so I don’t know how it fairs with other operating systems but I would assume it would work with Windows 10 at least but I don’t want to make any claims I can’t verify.

It’s very well made and feels quite durable, I am a little disappointed that it isn’t a braided cable as I think that would add to its longevity.

At 25.99 it’s a useful converter that should bring back some life to old things on a newer system.

Made from a quality manufacturer which I have brought from in the past. This driver is very universal and requires no software to be installed for use. If you are looking to buy you have your intended use for it and so I won’t go into detail on that one. Great for server rooms and Labs which require that bit extra protection. Well packaged on arrival with an easy to follow guide for use. I would recommend this manufacturer and buy again if needed.

If you have an old device that uses RS232, then this is a lifesaver to get it working with your modern computer. It’s a simple plug and play and you don’t need to install any drivers or software. This worked an absolute treat to connect an old satellite receiver and I’d highly recommend it!

eeded one for use on the job to connect my laptop to legacy serial devices. Upon arrival, I plugged this adapter into my laptop, went to device manager and picked a port. Running Win10 64 and no other or additional drivers needed to be loaded beyond what auto-installed when I plugged it in. Connected immediately to a device from 1997 and worked flawlessly. I’d buy again.

This is a great piece of IT kit for helping retain legacy computer connected equipment.

Many new PCs don’t have an RS232 connection and simple pieces of older but still usable kit such as laboratory scales could have old RS232 outputs so trying to connect them to a new PC in the event of an it failure might result in getting rid of the scales too at considerable cost.

This is a straightforward converter to a USB format and we found no issue using it with and old set of scales. The small blue LEDs on the case are a nice touch showing when data and signals are flowing.

Verdict: A bit niche but a good item for saving old equipment, some of which might be mission critical to your business and too expensive or obsolete to replace easily. Good price at under 30 quid.

Used for controlling a comms receiver. Had to go to VTOP to get driver for MAC OSX
Useful information about function of output pins. Make sure of output and input pin compatibity with device to which it is connecting. I had to buy a gender convertor for my use.

Very impressed as I didn’t even need the enclosed mini CD. Just plugged it into the USB port and Windows installed the driver and told me it was on port 3. Connected to my device and set my software to port 3 and everything worked fine just as if it was a real serial port. I haven’t needed to look at the CD or the instructions but I guess it might be more configurable if needed.

I plugged it in on a PC with windows 10 & thought I would have to plug in my CD reader but it installed the windows driver and worked strait away, did not need the CD that came with it. I connected a 232 to 422 converter to it and that worked as well so very pleased.
