Terrific Pad I recently bought one of these directly from 8bitdo, and though it took a little while to arrive, it was completely worth it.
I already had one of the black Bluetooth controllers, but there’s a certain convenience in having a 2.4G dongle so you can just plug and play.
I first tested it on the Mega Drive Mini 2, and it worked perfectly. It also works great on my Mac Mini and PC. Though there’s no official mention of it working with the Raspberry Pi, I tried it via RetroPie, and it worked perfectly.
The controller feels really comfortable to hold and use. Though the colour scheme is based on a Saturn controller, the shell itself takes after the smaller Japanese version of the Mega Drive 6-button controller, rather than the larger version released here in the UK, so it might be somewhat uncomfortable for those with larger hands. There is a large version of the 6-button MD pad available from Retro-Bit (but if you do try one, go wired, as their batteries are terrible and the pads cannot be used wired).
Here on the 8bitdo M30, battery life is great, and it can be used wired. In my experience these are the best modern day Mega Drive controllers.
Works great with the MisterFPGA platform, Nintendo Switch and the Sega Mini consoles I recently got my hands on the 8Bitdo M30 2.4G Wireless Gamepad, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed with its performance, especially its compatibility with the MisterFPGA project. The easy pairing and very low latency allow for a smooth gaming experience reminiscent of the classic Sega days.
The 6-button layout is a nostalgic touch, and the wireless connectivity ensures that gameplay is uninterrupted and free from the constraints of wires. I appreciate the inclusion of the Turbo Function, even though it’s unavailable on the Switch. The built-in rechargeable battery is a great feature, ensuring that I don’t have to constantly swap out batteries during intense gaming sessions.
The attention to detail and care in the design is evident, making it one of the highest-quality retro controllers I’ve come across. The package also includes a 2.4G receiver and a USB cable, which is a nice touch.
However, I deducted a star because I feel the controller could benefit from some ergonomic improvements for extended gameplay. But that’s just me and may not apply to you. Nonetheless, if you’re a fan of the MisterFPGA project and are looking for a controller that offers both nostalgia and modern features, the 8Bitdo M30 is a solid choice.
This is a very well-built controller. The D-Pad is easily the best I've ever used for fighting games. But the problem is the size. The button size and placements are just too small for my liking. Actually, the overall controller is just too small. This is a very well-built controller. The D-Pad is easily the best I’ve ever used for fighting games. But the problem is the size. Amazing Genesis/Mega Drive/Saturn gamepad. D-Pad is a little touchy. Replicating one of the best gamepads ever created is a tall order, but 8Bitdo did a fine job. What’s on offer is perfect if you need a Genesis/Mega Drive/Saturn pad with your favorite emulator or mini console. If that’s what you’re looking for, feel free to stop reading here. You’ll enjoy this pad.
“Should I buy this or the bluetooth version?”: If you’re planning to use this on more than your main computer, I’d recommend the bluetooth variant. If you don’t need the bluetooth specifically, I would tend toward this version (2.4G wireless with a dongle) as it removes a lot of configuration/connection headaches. (And it’s a little cheaper)
Cons: The D-Pad is a little touchy. It has less resistance than a standard SEGA disc and I found myself inputting diagonals a lot more than I would have liked. In terms of complains, it’s extremely low on my list.
Pros: Very comfortable in the hands. The weight mainly comes from the battery alone and I don’t feel tired after using it for several hours. Every button has a satisfying “give” through the rubber membrane. There’s no “mushiness” at all. Lastly, the D-Pad is the signature SEGA disc, with a soft texture and great response. I’ve played through Saturn Castlevania: SOTN entirely with it on a single charge (8+ hours) and was left very happy.
I just want this specific controller with both Saturn and Genesis/Mega Drive 2.4G receivers. I'd buy 2 of each, and 2 more if they ever come in the Model 2 V-Saturn colors. 10 (TEN!!) stars if literally any of this happens lol.
