I am completely new to the videography world and have no experience with action cameras yet not one time did I have a hiccup using the X3. I initially looked into the camera because I wanted a hands-free solution when traveling to Japan because I wanted to experience the moment I was in rather than concerned with catching everything on camera to look back on later. This met my expectations and far beyond. The 360 footage I was able to get during my entire trip was so crystal clear it’s almost as if when I watch the videos I’m right back in my vacation. This was so easy to travel with and so compact it fit in my sling bag as if when I put it away it was never there. I coupled this camera with a backpack clip mount and you would assume the shaking of the camera and the constant moving around Jostling up and down would cause very shaky footage, but the stabilization in the X3 made it seem like it was a floating drone camera that had no movement other than gliding along with me and catching every scene flawlessly, utilizing the Insta360 app on my phone and looking back through the footage, there are so many things that I caught on camera that I had no idea about while I was in the moment, and that is exactly what I was hoping to accomplish with purchasing this camera I would recommend it for anyone who wants to capture the moment, but also be completely immersed in the moment as it’s happening.

The Insta360 X3 is the most versatile action camera out right now. You can shoot in 360 and then edit or reframe your shot so that you can show anything that you filmed in that 360 sphere. Anybody who’s afraid to shoot or edit 360 video don’t be this camera is so easy to use and the Insta360 app is so easy and fun to use it will take you just a few minutes before you feel like an expert. There are two areas of concern with this camera one being the lenses are exposed and so you have to be mindful to not drop or brush the lenses against anything because if they get scratched those scratches can ruin your images. Next, make sure you keep your lenses clean, I recommend carrying a lens cleaning cloth, like the one that comes included with the camera, with you all the time because if you get dust or hair or something on the lens, it will show up and ruin your photos and videos, now my other part of concern is audio you cannot plug a microphone directly into the camera. You need to have an audio adapter and if audio is important to you, which it should be if you’re making videos, then you’re going to need the adapter, and I really wished they would allow you to plug directly into the camera with a microphone, include the adapter with the camera, or create a wireless mic system that they can sell to us that has the receiver already integrated into the camera itself. One last thing, if you get this camera expect to have lots of fun with it because it is really a fun piece of tech.
Great little camera and 360 video is a fantastic thing, but absolutely buy the insurance because it’s incredibly easy to damage the lenses:
I had the camera tip over accidentally and was super-lucky the first time because it landed on its edge and didn’t touch the lenses. So from then on I was WAY, WAY more careful, and I STILL damaged BOTH lenses by the end of my vacation (!).
Fortunately I had purchased the insurance and I strongly recommend you do the same, because these things are simply WAY more vulnerable to damage than, say, your phone.
The camera did shut down on me a few times for temperature protection, which caused me to miss some video I would have liked to have had, but it was in warm conditions (90F) and high-dynamic range (HDR) mode, which tends to run hotter, and they warn about that, so I can forgive…somewhat. Just be aware of that, and check frequently to see that the red “recording” light is still blinking. (I switched to non-HDR video eventually because of the thermal shutdown possibility; might not be a factor in colder conditions.)
BIG TIP: These things record video in approximately 15-minute “chunks”, after which they finalize the video for the last chunk, and then start recording a new chunk. (I suspect this is done to preserve as much video as possible, in the event of a mishap).
However, it takes several seconds to finalize one chunk and begin recording the next, so if there is a critical bit of action going on right at the switch, those missing 15-20 seconds might be the exact thing you didn’t want to miss! (This is especially a big deal if you’re recording, say, an entire day.)
So, if possible, right before something you want to make SURE you capture, it’s probably worth it to stop recording, then start recording anew so that you’re sure to capture the stuff you wanted.
AND, one final tip: there is a programmable button on the camera that in its default setting switches to “single lens mode”. If mainly what you want is 360 footage, go into your settings and change that button to be simply another 360-video recording button so you don’t miss half your action. (Ask me how I learned how important this is.)
In summary, these are great little cameras, just pay for the insurance, and if you can’t afford the insurance, don’t buy the camera because you SURE can’t afford to replace it when you break it (and you WILL break it.) And keep in mind the other limitations I mentioned.
Great tech
Expensive camera. I had the XOne previously and the X3 with a screen and Now I’ve played with it set it up for motorbike and used it for walking
I love it.
I’m doing route 66 next week and wanted it to make memories
The best 360 camera by far within its price range
I’ve had a lot of sports/action cameras and was a bit sceptical about going for a 360 one. However I was not disappointed and the features in this tiny camera are amazing. Editing in the app is easy and the quality of the footage is brilliant. Not the cheapest camera in its range but worth the extra pennies.
Good quality produc
Keep in mind that this is different than the regular action cameras. A lot of new features. A lot of new options. You have to spend some time for learning how to use it and how to create good shots. Maybe the night shots are not the best one comparing to GoPro.
Great stabilisation as you would expect from 360 cameras – on par if not slightly better than the GoPro Max. Picture quality is more or less similar though, the colours might be a bit better but there’s not a lot in it. Where it stands out is the big front screen though, it’s easier to use and gives a much better user experience than the Max. If you’re not using After Effects for the edit then the Insta360 software is quite easy to use and has some handy features (like object tracking). Overall a good product, but not a massive step up from the Max where it matters – image quality.
Super 360 camera
Great for holidays with the family.
Definitely needs a bigger storage card, 512Mb in my opinion.
Also needs phone storage big enough to fo editing of the video footage later.
Quality is brilliant, the effects from the insta are just insanely good. Read reviews on the Internet before buying and Believe this is the best on the market at the moment.
If you’re a video fanatic, definitely get on!
First of all this is a great camera. Far better quality than the equivalent priced gopro. However the editing software is poor and lacking features that are required to stitch two or more clips together.
This means that if you want to post a 360 video to YouTube then you have to record it all in one go. You can’t record one clip in one location and then another clip in another location and join them together.
You can if you convert the file to a flat type video and then import that into Premier Pro but that’s a extra cost.
Sadly until they add this feature the camera is pointless for my application.
