I use this with my R6, and have had no problems with compatibility or drops in power. My only complaint about the spaghetti cable is that I’d prefer to have a little more straight length on both ends, perhaps with fewer coils. I use this with one of the SmallRig cable clamps and the cable is gripped firmly and out of the way. If you are already a SmallRig V Mount battery owner, then this is simply a solid match!
I rarely use OEM batteries because I always fear running out in the middle of shooting, so I use AC power in my studio and this device gives you the same piece of mind in the field by plugging into a bigger external battery.
The “Dummy” battery fits perfectly in my cameras without needing to remove the battery door.
Most of all, I like it because it’s from SmallRig, a company I can trust.
What is described is exactly what you get, as usual with SmallRig. Great quality at good prices.
If not for SmallRig and companies like them, my family would have had less money to live on over the years. I am partly a videographer by trade and I have been able to keep costs down and increase quality with SmallRig’s approach to camera equipment. I have built camera rigs/cages that would have cost thousands of dollars for far less without sacrificing quality AT ALL (I thank you SmallRig and so does my family). This adapter is no exception to my story. It does exactly what it is supposed to.
Worked amazingly outside of a few times where the camera would state it needed to be charged. But 95% of the time, I was able to plug into my mount battery and power my canon r7 with no issues! The battery also has a cable routing system built in so that its easy to run the cable through the camera battery door.
This dummy battery works great in my Canon EOS 5D Mark III and allows me to power the camera for much longer intervals with a V-mount battery mounted to my tripod. It also allows me to shoot in frigid weather and not worry that my Canon battery will give out.
Contrary to what other reviewers may have experienced, I have not had any overheating problems.
Also, please ignore the video review by Andy Costa where he claims he got a defective battery. He just forgot to close the battery door on his Canon camera which is required in order for the camera to power-on. Even with a regular battery inserted in a Canon, the camera won’t turn on until the battery door is closed. I hope he removes the video so that others won’t be misled into thinking that SmallRig is sending out defective products.
[UPDATE: I was able to find filmmaker Andy Costa’s website and send him a direct message to let him know of his erroneous review. He didn’t respond to my email but he did remove his video review of this item – confirming my suspicion his dummy battery WAS working fine in his camera, contrary to his conclusion in the video.]
