Had this smart plug for quite a while now, always worked well! I paired it with my Alexa following the instructions on the Tapo app with no issues. I’m using it for a light and it does its job.
These are so handy!! I suffer with chronic back pain and these magical plugs have helped me so much. I have linked them with appliances that are difficult to access and my life has become much easier. No more bending over; just a couple of carefully chosen words and Alexa is so willing to help me. Life is much easier now; I couldn’t manage without them.
Enables me to monitor the energy consumed by different appliances which helps me to see the real cost of using different devices and decide what to cut back on to save money. I must admit that once I had found out how energy hungry a couple of suspected devices really were I haven’t personally used them much but they are very useful for that.
We now have around 6 of these little gems dotted around the house used on various appliances to see what energy they are using and how we can save a little money. They work that well that they have been able to identify that our under counter fridge has actually broken (never stops running), so this has already paid for itself in the electricity we will be now saving on the new fridge! They are easy to setup, provide a great deal of control and useful insight into electricity usage.
These are probably the cheapest smart sockets around and work really well. Very easy to setup with good control & features from the Tapo app.
They work well & easily with Amazon echo. They can also be integrated with other smart home platforms via integrations. Mine are linked to Hubitat & nodeRed. The power monitoring is very useful when trying to be more energy efficient. I have various graphs produced via nodeRed, but the facilities built into the app are good too.
The only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that 1 of my 8 has developed a fault. I suspect a stuck relay, it works via the app and monitors power, but when turned off the device connected still functions. It’s only been connected to a low power TV, others on devices with a higher current draw have been fine, so hopefully just a one off issue.
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to keep track of keep their energy costs and having more control just make sure you link it with smart hub(Alexa/Google hub)
I find this product excellent I specifically use them on lamps in the hall and landing and setting the on at sunset causes the light to come on at sunset ie a different time each day. You can set it to come on X minutes early if required. The energy monitor is very good you can set it up for the cost of you electric and get an instant reading as well various days, weeks, months to work out your running costs per item
Finally (!!!) a common protocol for smart homes. Smart devices can now be used with any ecosystem be it Siri, Alexa, or Google all sharing the same protocol. No need for manufacturers to target individual platforms. The future is finally here(-ish)
I bought this to control my home heating from work with Siri so I arrive to a nice warm living room. And it works great once (painstakingly) setup.
I’m a tech enthusiast and an early adopter, so I was expecting some hiccups anyway. Now in the process of moving everything over to Matter.
My problem was that the plug didn’t go into the appropriate pairing mode when first plugged it. And it didn’t give a blinking light the instructions said. So naturally, Home app repeatedly failed to see it and pair.
The solution: press and hold the power button on the side of the plug for 10 seconds until it flashes and turns off again, then quickly scan the QR code again and it should pair.
Obviously still early days for Matter in general and for this plug in specific. That said, I have zero doubt that Tapo will update the firmware to improve the pairing experience once they get some feedback. It’s currently running firmware 1.0 with no updates available.
Good luck you’ll.
How far technology has come. I can now emulate someone if at home whilst travelling. I will link these plugs to a tv simulator and a desk lamp to emulate being at home whilst travelling. I opted for this brand as I have Tapo security camera and never had any issues with them.
Works great with Alexa. I use it to turn cooling fan on in my bedroom from downstairs before I go to bed. And use the timer to turn light on and off while away from home. Energy use is hidden away a little in the app. Searched to find it.
Highly recommended.
Oh my god..this is what you need if you want to be able to remotely control something and monitor the energy consumption. Simple to set up (through the app) and works perfectly. Got some very surprising data, what I thought had high energy consumption was in fact low and what I thought was low turned out to be high. At least I have a better understanding of the energy usage by device
Purchased these plugs with the intention of monitoring my cars charging costs. The plug was very easy to set up and for the first two nights worked great. However came to charge car on the third night and nothing. Plug is responsive and turns on and off via the app or the button but will not run the car charger.
Very disappointed what initially worked very well now fails to do what I purchased it for. The plug still works but not to charge my car. The car draw is only 2.3kwh max as its a 3 Pin charger. I have ordered a older Kasa unit as reports are very positive regarding this purpose.
Update I purchased a heavy duty extension lead of 10m instead of my 30m extension. This must have been the issue as the plug now works as intended I think the load of 10amp over a sustained period was too much for the cheaper 30m extension. My fault not the plug.
I have had a lot of problems with other makes of this type of socket not working. This really came to a head when I changed my main wireless point to a Ubiquiti one. The other brands would work for a while then drop out totally unreliable. The firmware on these sockets are so much better, they allow you to easily swap networks (I have multiple WAPs), when I set them up they downloaded a firmware update which pleased me as I realised they are being maintained. I particularly like the timer feature that allows you to time around sunrise and sunset. I have solar panels and a PHEV car. If I use the car at night I generally want to charge it from solar. The sockets turn the car charger on an hour after sunrise and off an hour before sunset. If I know that I need to use the car first thing then I can easily override this setting so that it charges but using full price electricity.
Have installed a few of these Smart Plugs and after downloading the Tapo App I have found them very useful around the house to get to know exactly what I am using, data is collected on the App so you can view any trends. It is a bit of a learning curve but I now have been able to set and trim my timer functions for appliances. Apart from the outlay, I have saved by using them Wisely. Payback was easy, one plug was connected to my TV, set-top box, and speaker system as I could switch it all off and on when I wanted through the timer settings even taking into account that the set-top box would require an update through the early hours. Its also Alexa friendly as well
TP-link’s TAPO system is excellent and these are very useful additions. As well as having the standard remote plug features of scheduling, random switching and timer control they also have a built-in monitoring facility.
This allows you to see what electrical power a connected devices is using now (e.g., 20 watts) as well as the accumulated power over a period of time (e.g., 1.5 kilo-watt-hours in the past 24 hours). It soon becomes clear that reported power consumption in a device’s technical specifications can be different from actual power consumption. Interesting data can be observed, for example, the varying rates of power usage of a smart charger.
If the plug is programmed with the actual cost of the electricity, a running total of expenditure is also kept. This feature can be programmed for different electrical costs at different times or seasons. Where such costs and time periods vary from day to day, the plug cannot update the information dynamically from the internet. Each plug keeps its own data about power consumption and costs; there is no feature whereby the app might collate data to show overall consumption from several plugs, something that would be useful.
One small criticisim I would have of these plugs is that the corresponding section of the app needs a revision. Currently the new features of power and cost monitoring look very much like an afterthought and really do deserve a more prominent position in the app. This is something that can be sorted out in future developments of the TAPO app.
Overall, a product to recommend fully.
I now have 4 of these brilliant Smart Plugs, one with power monitoring, so easy to set up, Tapo App is just brilliant. You can set them up on Timer , Away or set a Schedule, they work flawlessly, I think they are a great security option whilst you are away from home.
I was in Washington DC, wife was at home in UK, just to see if they worked via the app from the USA, well they did, instantly, these are great value for money, also the voice control via Alexa is great.
Disclaimer: I’ve only been using this plugs for 1 day so far, so it’s not gonna be the most in-depth review, but just from this 1 day alone I wanted to write a review to clear up some INCORRECT things that I read in other reviews before I bought it:
1. I read some people saying that the energy monitor updates once every minute or every 30 seconds or something. Either they were on old firmware or have a faulty device. The energy usage monitor updates every 5 seconds from my experience (almost real-time). This is a huge plus for me as it was one of my major concerns
Now, for my own points:
The plug does what it says it does. Was very easy to set it up out of the box, it measures energy, you can input your own cost per kw/h, and so on. But there are some features that could make it so much better and it’s strange they didn’t think about them.
-For example, I bought 8 plugs. I wanna have the option to not just group them by room, but also to look at energy usage by group, or as a total. I don’t want to have to click on each plug manually, read the usage and add them all together to figure out my electricity. Why is it not possible to view usage by group/as a whole? That would also give the option of showing other useful stuff like pie charts indicating which plug draws the most energy, etc.
-Another one. My bill is billed once every 2 months, and it’s not on the 1st of the month. The app should let you define your own billing period. Currently it only offers monthly.
-Also, for a smart app, it’s not very smart that it does not let you edit your account’s time zone, and always assumes you’re in the UK timezone. Not a big deal for me, but just to show you that they could have thought about user experience a lot better.
-And why is there no option for the user to export the data somehow, in case they wanna read it better in their own analytics app and their own interface? Seems trivial and adds a lot of value, but once again, it wasn’t done.
I can come up with several more but you get the point. The presentational interface for energy monitoring is very basic.
Would get 5 stars if it was designed a bit better.
These are great.
The monitor works a treat and told me I needed to turn my fridge/freezer and my PC off due to excessive energy use.
I now eat and drink warm moldy stuff and live the life of a hermit without any access to my extensive Steam library or social media contact.
Thanks Tapo 😉
I have bought several of these when they were on offer, and have just ordered more at the full price. They are easy to set up, and my new ones are for my Christmas lights – outside and my indoor tree – so that I can control them all easily from my phone. Also use them for the plug-in air fresheners and set them to come on for 1/2 hour first thing in the morning.
Had it working in a few minutes with no hassle. Very comprehensive capabilty to enter different costs at times of year and day as well though i havent bothered with that.
You can also get similar plugs which have a display built in but seems to me they may be awkward to look at if near the floor plus its just generally easier to look at from anywhere on a smartphone, plus can be controlled via the app from anywhere with internet connectivity.
I’ve got other tapo plugs which work flawlessly which is why i bought this make when i wanted a plug with energy monitoring specifically which my others dont have.
I now own 6 of these plugs in total, and initially got a little frustrated and annoyed due to they keep disconnecting as per some of the reviews on here. So I did the firmware updates via the app and things did settle down a little and the resetting of the plugs became less frequent.
3 of these plugs are in my detached garage whereas my Wifi router is in the house and yet they still functioned as normal so that was a bonus but I still had to reset them from time to time.
Then due to other reasons, I attached a new wireless access point to my router rather than using the stand isp all in one hub job, and since that day I have not had to reset the plugs once.
And they work as per the label.
There are a couple of downsides in that these won’t integrate with the Kasa plugs also made by TP_link and also they don’t work with IFTTT but Alexa functionality is adequate.
Overall a good plug to hide away and voice control or use with Christmas lights maybe.
