I was skeptical that a USB-C ethernet adapter would achieve fast enough speeds. I recently got 2 GB fiber Internet and my computer only had a 1 GB ethernet port so I bought this to see if I could get faster speeds and sure enough it worked! Simply plug and play. It uses a RealTek chip inside the dongle.

Required driver download to get full speed
I have 3 different brands of USB 2.5GB ethernet adapters and this was the most difficult to install. The adapter shows up as 2500/2500 Mbps in my windows 2011 settings, but I was only getting around 1.23-1.25 Gb when I ran iper3 tests to 3 other computers, so I know this device was the limiting factor. It turns out that I needed to install a new driver. That was also a bit of a pain because Amazon says this adapter is model 201095 but the Cable Matters support page only listed a 201090. At least that still worked, and it refers you to the drivers on the Realtek website, which is the actual chip in this device.

So to sum it up, this adapter works fine, but you may need to install new drivers. I am getting about 2.37 Gbps which is basically as fast as it can get, so now I’m happy. And as a tip, the official driver on Realtek is called Realtek USB FE / GBE / 2.5G / 5G Ethernet Family Controller Software

I would definately recommend this to someone looking to increase their wired ethernet speeds. I must admit I did not test this up to 2.5Gbps but I can verify that it does deliver true 1Gbps throughput which is rare for this type of adapter as all the other 1Gbps adapters I have ever tried (many well-known name brands) and none of them performed much over 100Mbps.

    Ideal for PC / Macs
This is a USB C to Ethernet Adapter. It works well in a PC. Although not in the description, I did try on both my Samsung Android tablet and Android phone. I did not work.

When used on a PC, this adaptor seemed faster than the inbuilt Ethernet port on my Desktop PC. No drivers were needed and was autodetected.

    Works with Macbook
Got this to use with an M1 MacBook because WiFi doesn’t reach max speeds of my router. With 5ghz WiFi my download speed will max out around 800Mbps but with this adapter and an ethernet cable I can get 1.1 Gbps which is the max speed from my broadband package

The adapter was plug n play, didn’t need to download driver. The connection is stable, haven’t had any drop outs yet. I only wish the cable was a higher quality

good but check you need this specification first. not everyone is going to find it adds anything
There’s not much to it other than that it appears to be durable and well-made and it is one of those early products you can get on Amazon meeting the particular need of Thunderbolt/USB 4 with a 2.5Gbps Ethernet connection. For most people, there is not going to be much need for this currently, but I assume that if you are actually looking for this you already know you need something faster than the regular 1Gbps connection and you will be using it for high speed data transfer.

If not, do not bother with it, not because it is not cool to have, but when the time comes, this like all tech, will be cheaper and there will be more options available to you. There is nothing wrong with this, all that said, and if you do actually need it, I do recommend it.

    Perfect device
This little usbC device is surprisingly small for the bandwidth it can handle.
I tested this can got up to the expected speeds showing with iperf so its definitely a winner here. The price is not bad either (currently 22.99).
Its not reporting back which chip it is using but it is a Realtek device.
On the sales page it claims compatibility with windows/mac/chrome and is a thunderbolt 4 device, however it also works out the box for Linux devices and even worked at the max speeds on a steam deck which is just USB 3.2 Gen 2.

So this is a good device with an okay build, its compatible above what it claims with no messy driver installs and is capable of the speeds it claims but this is not going to speed up your connection if the other devices you connect this to are not compatible.

    Solid Build Quality
Unfortunately this didn’t work for me. I know it’s not down to the ethernet adapter, it’s my mistake i thought this might work with my oldish laptop running windows 10 unfortunately not. The adapter itself looks sturdy and solid, and to be honest i have no reason to believe this won’t do what it supposed to do when connected to the right device.

Quickly recognised within Windows 11, established link to second PC easily
This product does what it says on the tin, installed easily and was recognised by Windows 11 with no issue.

I was able to set up a connection between two computers using a direct network cable using a different IP address range than that issued by my router and I can transfer files between the two with no issue.

This is a good step up from gigabit networking and a lot less expensive than 10 gigabit cards for the time being.

Easyway to add 2.5 Gigabit to a PC or Mac
Having had issues with USB based Ethernet Adapters in the past this one has pleasantly surprised me.

The packaging is minimal and not that informative, just the cable in a box basically. Thankfully it’s pretty easy to use. It was detected right away under Windows 11 and 10. Under windows 7, it was detected as a USB CD drive at first with a disc containing the drivers needed. Which is a neat way to handle providing the needed drivers. It was also detected without issue right away under Mac OS 10.14 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, but I couldn’t get it working under older versions of Ubuntu or Android.

Performance wise it seems to do about the same as a PCI-E card, getting transfer speeds of around 2.35 Gigabit a second. Though this can fluctuate as low as 2 gigabit if the cable is under an strain or is used intensively for a long period of time.

Annoyingly, but perhaps unsurprisingly it just refuses to work if plugged into any USB type C port that only runs at USB 2.0 speeds. Though thankfully these are fairly rare, but do check before buying that your device as at least a USB 3.0 type C port.

    Great adapte
I use this adapter in the office since the wi-fi is terrible and we have ethernet cables on every desk.
The speed is really good, pretty much the same as the desktop connected directly with an ethernet cable.
As an adapter, I think it’s good. It’s quite small, works well, and it’s lightweight.
I would for sure recommend it to anyone!

Worked great - tested on W10, W11 and MacOS
This lightweight and compact unit is probably the easiest way to add 2.5gb ethernet to most USB C capable devices.

I plugged it into my Windows 10 desktop, m1 mac mini and windows 11 laptop and all detected it and started working pretty much immediately.

Running a throughput test with tamosoft between this adapter and a 2.5gb PCIE adapter in another computer it achieved near enough the full speed – pulling down 2350 mbps, uploading approx 1900mbps simultaneously – not a perfect result but very good nonetheless and comfortably double what you’d get on a gigabit link.

The automatically installed windows driver is rather long in the tooth – dated 2016 – so I updated to the latest from the Realtek website, although this didn’t really change the performance.

Power consumption appears minimal by this unit – I monitored the computer’s power consumption at the wall and the increase in usage was very marginal. Even after leaving the throughput test running for twenty minutes or so the case of the adapter hardly seemed warm to the touch. This is quite a contrast to some of the gigabit adapters I’ve used in the past, which certainly get warm after some time using them.

Unfortunately it didn’t work on my Android phone, although this does appear to be a software/driver issue as all the lights do come on – hopefully a later version of android or a different phone will support it – for context I’ve had no issues using a USB C gigabit adapter.

Of course, unless your network infrastructure supports 2.5gb you won’t see an improvement in performance – these are starting to come down but there is still quite a jump in price from gigabit kit! – still, with one of these adapters you will at least be ready for it.

    Recommended.

Great Product that works without a hitch
Currently, my home network boasts a blazing-fast 1.1 Gbps connection to the primary internet (WAN). While this speed is more than sufficient for everyday web browsing and rapid downloads, I was particularly interested in exploring the full potential of this adapter. Its primary objective was to facilitate speeds beyond the gigabit range for swift file transfers within my local network, connecting my PC and NAS.

In terms of hardware, my PC boasts a 2.5Gb NIC and the same goes for my NAS. To ensure a rigorous evaluation, I decided to test this adapter’s capabilities by conducting an internet throughput (iperf) test between my PC and my Mac, the latter equipped with this dongle. To eliminate any potential bottlenecks, I used a Cat 8 “Gaming” Ethernet cable for the connection. My PC served as the host, while my Mac, equipped with the adapter, acted as the client.

During testing, I observed impressive speeds, consistently hovering between 2.3 and 2.35 Gbps, which aligns closely with the promised 2.5Gbps speed. Achieving such speeds can be a challenge without high-end PC equipment and controlled lab conditions that minimize software and hardware overheads. Nevertheless, these results validate the use of a 2.5Gbps controller for handling data transfers at these remarkable speeds. When connecting to speed test servers via the internet, I consistently achieved speeds ranging from 1 to 1,050 Mbps. This confirms that the adapter performs exactly as anticipated.

Setting up and installing the adapter was a straightforward process. I simply plugged it in, and within seconds, my NIC was up and running. I was delighted to discover that there were no bothersome software installations or driver updates required, a convenience that applies to both PC and Mac users. It’s worth noting that this adapter also supports Linux, although this detail is not explicitly mentioned.

In summary, this product lives up to its advertised performance, is reasonably priced at 22.99, and comes remarkably close to its promised 2.5Gbps speed. Considering that it falls outside the realm of standard consumer technology, it offers exceptional value for money. I wholeheartedly recommend it to others seeking a reliable and high-speed networking solution.

This little helper is a must have tech gadget if you have an ultrabook like the HUAWEI MATEBOOK X that

big files around 100Gb that I need on my workstation for AI tests on a frequent base.
I was able to get 1Gbit/s with my CAT 6 cable which is very good.
The design is very slim and functional – exactly as I like it.
    I can recommend this product.

    Great!
The items I’ve had from Cable Matters have all delivered as expected and this 2.5gbps USB-C adapter is no different. It is a bit plasticky but in the whole scheme of things you’re not paying a premium price wise for the adapter so is to be expected. This doesn’t hinder it’s performance though and it delivers 2.5gbps no problem at all.

The throughput up to the moment has been pretty consistent and haven’t had any dropouts or similar.

What I would say is that to get the full 2.5gbps is dependent upon your device and if you connect it to 10gbps ports then you won’t have an issue. If you connect it to slower ports then you won’t get the full throughput in my experience, but again, this is to be expected and is just like when using external SSD / NVMe drives with the speed difference.

All in all this works a treat and can only recommend.

Speeds as expected on Windows, lacking on Android
My home network is 3 Gbps, and I currently use a 10 Gb NIC. I’m using CAT 7 cable, direct from router to device.

My speed when testing with my main NIC was 3141 Mbps DL / 3201 Mbps UL. When switching to the Cable Matters USB-C Ethernet Adaptor, my speeds were 2339 Mbps DL and 2339 Mbps UL. This is very close to the expected 2.5 Gbps speeds advertised, and it works great! I plugged it in, the installer ran, and within seconds, I was ready to go with this NIC.

When plugging it into Android, it was a different story. Over WiFi, I was getting 327 Mbps DL and 200 Mbps upload. After turning off Mobile Data and Wi-Fi, plugging in the adaptor, and verifying my phone showed “Ethernet”, I tested again, and was left with speeds of 272 Mbps DL and 456 Mbps UL. There was an improvement over my wireless speeds for upload, but there was a drop for download. It appears this product doesn’t deliver the full 2.5 Gbps. The phone in question is a Pixel 6 Pro, which uses USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 (max 5 Gbps), so I’m not being limited by the device. I also tested genuine and synthetic network loads (file transfer and speedtest, respectively) and found similar results.

Overall, this item works great as advertised for Windows, but it doesn’t deliver the full 2.5 Gbps speeds on all devices. Plug and Play capabilities may need to be improved.

A no frills USB-C to Ethernet adapter than installed in a second on latest Windows 11 without asking for drivers or other fuss.

The exterior is uneventful apart from led indications, but digging deeper into the PC installation properties I found a Realtek USB Gaming FE Family (RTL8156 etc 2.5gbs capable) chip was used so that speaks to good compatibility and reliability, Which for a simple to install device like this can complete the perfect picture.

Works as expected on Windows Laptop
Review of Cable Matters USB C to Ethernet Adapter

Arrives in sealed branded cardboard box. I much prefer sealed boxes for electrical goods as you can be sure it is not a return.

    Inside are:
    1) 1 x Ethernet Adapter
    2) 1 x Instructions

The instructions just point to Cable Matters email and web site so do not provide anything of practical use. The Ethernet adapter itself has a short and stiff cable with USB-C type connector. It is rated to 2.5Gbps which is a high specification, to get the x 2.5 speed you need a suitable network switch as well. I had no issues running at the more normal 1Gbps network speed on my Windows laptop.

In use a blue LED lights up when plugged into a USB-C port and when a network cable is attached the adapter has network activity LEDs as well.

In terms of openness, I was sent this Ethernet Adapter under the Amazon Vine programme for an impartial review.

What can I say about this micro USB-C network adapter?!

Small size makes it easy to handle and plug and play, works straight away in Windows 11.
Well illuminated, you know it is working straight away and can see download and upstreams working as well as a blue power indicator that is not too small, it is just the right size to be seen without straining your eyes.
Speeds up to 2.5gb depending on your hardware capabilities for example USB-C gen1/2.
Outstanding after-sales and customer service, don’t believe me check feedback left by others.

It is a little expensive but you do get 2.5gb from it instead of the 1gb or less than you often get with these. Tested it on my android phone, plugging it in to the phone brings up a blue light on the top so you know it’s connected, the phone detected it straight away. Then connecting the ethernet cable to it shows both send and receive lights and the phone asks how you want to configure it (permissions etc).

Also worked fine on my Dell laptop with Linux on it, so while it doesn’t mention Linux compatibility, it worked just fine as soon as I plugged it in, no additional software required.

Speeds tested and verified at 2.5Gbps
I have a 2.5Gbit wired connection between my main computer (plugged into 2.5Gbit port on my motherboard) and server (plugged into 2.5Gbit PCIE card). I tested this by disconnecting from the motherboard and connecting directly to this adapter instead. Everything else (cables etc) remained constant.

I initially saw speeds drop by about 40% across my network, but this was because I was using this adapter with a USB C extension cable. When I plugged it directly into the 10Gbps USB C port on my motherboard, speeds were basically the same as when using my existing 2.5Gbps network. I can recommend this as a quick and easy way to add 2.5Gbit networking to your computer.

    A lightning-fast PnP Ethernet adapter!
I really like this adapter for several reasons.

For starters, the adapter is fairly small and compact. I’ve owned a fair few USB Ethernet adapters in my time, but I think this is the most compact one I’ve actually owned.

Despite it’s size, it packs a punch. Not only is the build quality brilliant, but the speed offered are equally brilliant.

Installation was no hassle at all. Windows 10 recognised the device almost instantly, and it was plain sailing from there on in.

All-in-all, this is a wonderfully simple, but fast, Ethernet adapter with a smooth compact design. It would make a fantastic addition to anyone’s laptop bag.
