    I just upgraded to full fibre as the providers router didn’t have a very good wifi coverage.

    Most people like me have a spare router in a cupboard somewhere and thought that I could use this as an extender. Well that didn’t go to plan, Teams dropped out, games were unplayable due to the lag and steaming was non existent.

    So decided to purchase this 3rd party router from TP-Link. After reading the instructions and not having a degree in network engineering. I thought what have I done. Static, dynamic, bridge mode DHCP, IPV6 along with another 30 other different settings. Anyway after plugging it in. It worked perfectly along with great wifi coverage and still achieving the full fibre speeds.

    Also you get amazing support from TP-Link via live chat and email.

    I have suffered with WiFi issues since I recently moved into a rented flat. I went with NOW Broadband as my partner was with them living in the same area and had no issues with them.

    First few days were great with no issues then started to have connection dropouts, losing a bar of WiFi signal leaving the living room where the hub was etc. Phoned NOW 3 times, replaced the hub, sent an engineer out who supposedly replaced a contactor in the box outside, gave me money off my bill to buy a booster, nothing worked.

    I found this item as it had great reviews. I thought why not. I thought this replaced my NOW hub but it doesn’t. You keep your internet set up the way it is and this item is connected to your hub via an ethernet cable. You then connect your devices to this router and you should get all green lights.

    Initially I had green lights but no internet connection. I panicked thinking it wasn’t going to work with my WiFi. However on the instructions there is details of a website to troubleshoot and eventually it done a firmware upgrade on my phone for the router which took a few minutes. This is all easy to do so do not worry if you’re not tech minded, either am I.

    After the firmware upgraded, everything was sorted. I had internet. The next thing was to test if it had improved my speed. My NOW hub was situated in the living room and when lying in bed I would only ever get 2 bars of WiFi on my iPhone and videos would rarely load. After I was connected to the TP router I went through and it did drop to 2 bars but then straight away went back up to 3. I done 2 speed tests (see photo above). The bottom one is connected to the TP router and the top one is connected to the NOW hub. It’s almost double the speed. That’s another thing, because you need both your normal broadband and this router set up, you can just switch between the 2 if you want too.

    I have the Tether app which again it tells how to install in the instructions and I can now control my devices etc. It’s really easy to use and you can customise your settings to your preference.

    To conclude I was initially skeptical that this would work with NOW but it did and has improved my connection massively. If you’re thinking about it, just do it.

    Hope this helps anyone who was confused like I was before buying.

    Being with virgin media, wifi is intermittent and slow despite their app saying it is 250+. I already have a TP link account so that made things quicker. The TP Link was easy to set up and we now have actual fast wifi. Now no TV buffering and no delay when on the internet. It is a disappointing you have to buy things like this due to rubbish equipment from broadband providers.

    I bought this because our WiFi has trouble reaching certain areas upstairs. We were recommended something much more expensive by our broadband provider, but after reading the reviews for this, we decided to try this router out first. It’s a great little thing as it has enabled complete WiFi coverage upstairs with full signal that hasn’t yet dropped. If you also have an OFNL router tucked away in a cupboard and you’re finding it isn’t reaching certain areas in your house, then I’d highly recommend trying this before splashing out on an expensive piece of kit.

    Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOMG. I ordered this after having had no Internet service for 2 weeks due to broken router and absolute failure of customer service from nochatchat (who i would not recommend at all)
    Anyway after being without any broadband I bought this expecting a tech nightmare to set up.
    I couldn’t have been more wrong, it was so easy, basically plug and play. Got Internet again and although its on my full fibre and a tiny bit shaky it works tremendously.
    Really very happy with this, it’ll definitely do until my useless service provider figures out how the postal service works and sends me a new fibre hub. (Seriously don’t go with nochatchat… they’re really not good when your modems break down)
    But this wee beauty is a cheap, cheerful lifesaver. Dont hesitate to buy.

But I feel like it doesn’t really increase or maximise your wifi speed but overall it’s good to have for your house if you live with a lot of people.

    Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI bought the AX20 because the Virgin Media Hub 5 was giving me a lot of trouble – it’s awful with some mobile phones and it continually dropped signal. When setting up, I followed the steps of putting the VM Hub into ‘modem mode’, plugging all the cables into the TP-Link, and powering it on.

    The result? A little red light on the TP-Link router indicating there was no internet connection. Hmm. I had a look online and came to the conclusion I had done everything correctly. So I went to the TP-Link support page and by chance looked at the firmware for this router. Wouldn’t you know it! There was a bug fix in the latest (as of 11/03/22) that “Fixed the bug that the router can’t get WAN IP in some cases”. Sounded like it fixed my issue!

    So, I downloaded the new firmware to my laptop, connected the router to my laptop via Ethernet, and followed the steps on the support page to get it updated. Now it works wonderfully and I have a stable connection that is much better than the VM Hub 5!

    This is a cheap single band router, which I used as a Cat6-wired access point to extend network in new house. For what it is it was OK, but the limitations showed fairly quickly and I quickly regretted the purchase.

    + easy to set up
    + cheap
    – LAN ports only 10/100 not gigabit
    – 2.4GHz only

    Having added a few IoT devices (Echo dots in a few rooms, smart plugs etc) I found the 2.4GHz band getting very crowded and phones and tablets that you needed bandwidth would suffer. The limited range of 5GHz from main router basically meant my phone, tablet or laptop would lock onto the 2.4GHz band and stick with it, rather than change back up to 5GHz, and would get constant drop-outs and inability to watch video. QoS controls didn’t seem to help things – I obviously tried this first.

    Buy cheap, buy twice. Learned this the hard way.

    After months of sticking with it and frustration, I bit the bullet and bought a dual band router to act as an access point and ‘forgot’ the 2.4 GHz network from the priority devices. Now I get 5GHz all over the house and can browse freely again.

    So if you want to extend the 2.4GHz network or if you don’t have many devices then this is probably good enough. I had a few devices plugged into the LAN ports on this router (eg Sky mini box) and the lack of gigabit was an issue here.

    I have a Virgin Superhub downstairs and using ethernet my Mac and PC laptops get 30+ mbps.

    When they are in the same room as the superhub, on wifi my Mac gets 16mbps and the Dell gets 23mbps.

    When they are upstairs, on wifi my Mac gets gets 5mbps and the PC gets 15mbps.

    Because of the poor wifi speeds upstairs I have used two long ethernet cables, to get the 30+ mbps.

    With the TPLink downstairs and using ethernet my Mac and PC laptops still get 30+ mbps.

    When they are in the same room as the TPLink, on wifi my Mac gets 21 mbps and the PC gets 23mbps.

    With the TPLink downstairs and the Mac and PC upstairs; on wifi my Mac gets gets 8mbps and the PC gets 18mbps.

    WHAT I DO NOW

    I moved the TPLink upstairs and connected it to the superhub by one long ethernet cable and connect two shorter ethernet cables to the laptops which, as expected still get the full 30+ mbps.

    Another benefit is that I have now connected my printer to the TPLink so it is a network printer used by both the Mac and the PC.

    OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSION

    With wifi in mind (in preference to cables all over the place), I had read several reviews of this and other routers and was swayed by a video review by Geeky Ranjit (check him out on you know where) which implied great wifi range.

    The wifi improvement was not that dramatic and all along I had in mind to use ethernet and have this router upstairs.

    On that basis it does exactly what I want and at at 20 I recommend i

    Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersFrom messing around with MS ICS (internet connection sharing) from the PC’s motherboard gigiabit LAN to share internet with the onbaord 54g WiFi AP was getting silly. Its an older Win XP thing, and new firewalls are kinda leaving it out, because it’s a pain. Anyway, I did get that to work after a few days of messing about, and I learnt a few things.
    I needed a WiFi router!

    **This came delivered in retail box, wrapped in clear shrink wrap plastic (manufacturer packaging) with “documents enclosed” clear window and Amazon’s stickers attached. It wasn’t what I was expecting from frustration free packaging. I’m kinda pleased I received a retail box, but at the same time disappointed Amazon spent no effort to conceal the item from the postal service or anyone else. It’s just to let people know, and is no reflection on the product review**

    OK, it’s got a UK 3 pin power supply (I read the lower end models may not??).
    A short RJ45 CAT5 cable is included.
    The antennas can be bent straight out of the back, for vertical mounting. They feel sturdy enough I guess (how often are you gonna move them?).
    It can be mounted vertically either way up thanks to the slots on the rear that slip over screw heads.

    Setup was really simple. The guide gives simple easy to follow hookup instructions, for “ADSL modem” read “any modem ADSL or cable” – it doesn’t have its own modem in built, you need to use your ISP modem or ADSL modem.
    Don’t bother with the mini CD, just open your browser and login to […], and you have access to the different settings that the modem can offer. Click the “quick setup” option, follow the instructions, and choose “dynamic IP” as that is most likely (it says that in the pamphlet). Clone your MAC address, and that’s the wired side done (assuming connecting main PC via Ethernet).
    WiFi network setup is really simple too, foolow instructions, use WPA2-PSK, enter an 8 digit multi character password (letters, numbers, and symbols @:& etc), change the network name (SSID) if you like. That’s done.

    Security settings were surprisingly straight forward to adjust. I wanted to Hide the name of the network, so people don’t see it when scanning. This is called “disabling SSID broadcast” and there’s a check box next to “broadcast SSID” – easy?
    I wanted to stop other devices from using the network (if they did manage to find it) so needed MAC filtering, which blocks all machine access codes (identifying numbers of all devices (network cards, dongles, PCs etc) except for ones on your allow list. Add new, enter the MAC address (you can find it in WiFi stats if its connected to your WiFi network), give it a name, and allow it – done.

    So yeah, it’s password encrypted with one of the better encryption methods, the network name is hidden, and it denies access to any machine/device except for the ones I have listed. Of course these things *can* be broken, but only by someone trying really hard and being particularly determined.

    I also specified that only my main PC has access to change any router settings, and that is actually always wired to the router – so another good security point.

    There’s some parental controls and stuff like that, whereby certain sites can be blocked at certain times from certain users – all seemingly advanced but easy to setup – there’s a pattern here!

    Took me about 5mins to bounce through all the settings and have the internet radio playing on a netbook in one room, whilst surfing on the main pc in the bedroom.

    In use (1x wired PC + 1x netbook wifi) it’s 2.7watts consumption, that’s a lot lower than that Virgin superhub thing (from what I’ve heard its over 12watts!). Of course you have to add the 6watts or whatever that your modem uses to the total bill from running the network.

    There’s no real impact on a 10mbps cable connection, maybe 0.2mbps drop but maybe not. It’s not noticeable.

    I’m still having a trouble setting up a Local network (LAN) between the WinXPhome PC and Win7Starter netbook, but thats because the 2 OS’s are network crippled to some extent, and I don’t know quite what I am doing. I did it once using my Motherboard Wifi, but wasn’t sharing internet then. It’s definitely possible, I just need to find the right settings.

    In summary, yes very easy to get up and running. Everything is included to pop it in between your existing modem and the PC you were using (connected via Ethernet RJ45). Low power consumption. OK, it’s a bit flimsy feeling, but it’s not something you are gonna be carrying around a lot!

    After not being able to stay connected on Mario Kart online via wireless last week (6 feet away from the hub!!!), I’d had the final straw with the BT Homehub 3 which I use for Bt Inifinity.
    And so I set out to replace it and alas landed here. So:

    The Good:
    Easy to replace
    (Up and running in 5 mins. Literally replace the hub and go to 192.168.0.1 on your PC and change connection type to PPPE and enter your username as [email protected])
    Better wireless speeds
    Before connected via the Homehub where the PS3 is located would get less than 1mb via wireless. Now It tends to get 6mb via the new router.
    Wired connections seemed to have remained the same (30mb for me)

    The Bad:
    The range seems worse (using G only)
    Where I would have got 3 bars before I get 2 now but everywhere else in the house is full strength. However that said the speeds are still better.
    One of the aerials feels loose
    I’m not sure if there is anyway to check that this aerial is fully functioning

    Anyways my main point is if you are looking to replace your homehub on infinity this will do the job for 20. (I struggled to find a straight answer of what routers will work on infintiy. It’s cable connection routers not ADSL routers. Hope this helps.) I should also point out all of my connections are via G network. Again this should be taken into consideration when I’m describing this products range and speed.

    So in conclusion I’ve not really had it long enough to fully comment on the wireless improvements but I would say so far so good. I was able to play an online match and stream music last night in the room that before would snail along and repeatedly drop connection. Therefore from what I can tell thus far I would say if you want rid of the homehub this is a worthwhile purchase.

    Golden Review Award: 148 From Our UsersI purchased this based on a couple of reviews on Amazon from fellow Virgin Superhub owners (thank you for your reviews!) Posting my review so others in similar positions can make the best choice.

    I was having issues with internet speed from my Virgin Superhub over wireless. Wireless signal was strong but internet was non-existent most of the time over wireless (wired was fine for the laptop/TV/Xbox, but my mobile & tab needed wireless). Using the Virgin Media forums I changed channels, position of hub, and finally switched from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz. This improved internet access but only when my phone or tab was literally in view of the hub – in any other room I got no signal – a common fault with 5Ghz apparantly. Also, my girlfriend’s iPhone 3GS didn’t work on 5Ghz, so she was only able to use 3G which wasn’t conveneient or cost effective.

    So I went to Amazon based on reviews for TP-Link routers on the Virgin site. I was told all I needed to do was put my Virgin Superhub into modem mode. I try to convince myself that I understand technology, but I only lie to myself….I really thought I was not going to get this right first time but I was very wrong. The TP-Link has such an easy setup and the Virgin advice makes putting the Superhub into modem mode very easy.

    Without repeating all the instructions, go to Virgin’s helpdesk and look up Modem Mode. Simply follow their instructions and make sure you wait until the hub’s front light goes purple. Attach all ethernet connections to TP Link router and attach cable between hub and router (I used right hand port on hub, and dedicated port on router). Once they were all switched on, I followed the TP Link instructions and I was ready. Really was that easy. It took less than 10 minutes and then another 5 minutes to change the settings on my electronics as I changed the name and password on the router.

    (EDIT: I also manually switched the channel. I checked for unused ones on WiFi Manager app on my android phone – this may not be necessary for everyone, but try it if you are still having problems)

    I have had a huge increase in wireless signal distance and strength around the house and even in the garden (about 50 metres from the router and 2 walls in between). I am getting very fast internet connection and data transfer around the house. I highly recommend this router – this is not just value for money, it is exceptional value for money as I now get internet at the speed I am paying for.

    If you have any questions about set up and don’t understand the very correct but sometimes baffling advice some intelligent reviewers give, don’t hesitate to ask for a dumbed down version from me.
