One of the best value bottles
As whisky goes, you can’t go wrong with this really.

Even when I bought some in a bar in Edinburgh only to find it was 15 a shot, at least it was Lagavulin 16. But if you can get this when it’s on offer around 60-70 you’re getting a great deal.

    Once tasted, you're hooked..
Never really was into whisky until a Scottish friend offered me a nip of this 16yo. Something to savour and enjoy for a good while on the palate..
I once bought the 8yo as it was far cheaper, but that seems completely different to the 16yo which is my all-time favourite.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersExceptionally smooth
What a fantastic flavour profile. For anyone who enjoys a Smokey whisky, this one is exceptional. 16 year old but tastes like it’s older. Complex and mature with layers of smoke that envelope the palette. My wife and I very much enjoyed this single malt from the beautiful Islay region of Scotland.

    Fantastic peated whisky
If you’re a fan of smoky, peated whiskies then you can’t look much further than this. Well balanced and smooth yet complexity that lingers for literally hours after you taste it. When on deal it really is a superb produc

Best value Scotch Single Malt whisky in 16 years
Thats our 4th bottle this year. When I saw it is on sale in Amazon, I could not stop myself but place an order and make a regular subscription for further discount:).

If you love peaty whisky with intense of dried fruit and smoky, it is one of my top good value bottles as always. I normally drink it straight as I prefer its original in-depth favour. But if you want to have more mellow and soft texture and open up the fruit aroma/ favour, a few drops of spring still water can do.

There is only a small issue on the packaging as happened on me when Amazon delivery for any whisky bottles so far… The Whisky Box HASN’T packed well with an extra sticker on top of the bottle. When I unpack the box, it always drops off the Amazon box. So be careful when u open the box.

    An excellent whisky
If you like the Islay whiskies together with Caol Ila this is a very good example of the type, It’s a whisky to be consumed straight or with a dash of water and enjoyed.
When they are on offer at Amazon very good value, unfortunately not always the case and the local supermarket may have better pricing.

Great whisky and good value at £50; becomes a must-buy on offer < £40
There’s loads of reviews of Lagavulin 8 that delve into the nose, taste & finish in far better detail than I ever could, so I’ll just say this – many people will buy the 8 instead of the 16 due to the latter’s ever-rising price, but don’t think of the 8 as simply a cheap replacement that’s not as good. The 8 doesn’t have the same complexity & depth as the 16, but it’s got a surprisingly different flavour profile and on it’s own merits ranks as an absolutely great whisky.

I didn’t need to buy this, as I already had bottles of both the 8 & 16 at home, which likely would last me the next 12-18 months – Lagavulin is great, but not an every-day dram for me (more of a Speyside fan). However, when it popped up on the front page at 38 on offer (normally 50-55), I had to pick up some more. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last time we see Lagavulin 8 below 40, particularly based on Diageo’s huge price bumps for the 16 (~40-50% increase in the UK between 2020 and now; some markets like Australia & the US have seen prices jump nearly 100% in that same period).

Grab it while it’s cheap, because it’s not going to last.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersVery interesting whisky...
So this is MY personal take on it, YOURS may be very different…
It’s quite pungent. I get a pleasant medicinal scent (similar to Laphroaig) seeping through burnt oak. It’s to the point I’m not sure if this is intentional or that maturing casks have long since had their day, or maybe a result of charring in the malting process. Very peated, with a suggestion of honey and possibly slight marzipan that progresses into a more savoury nuttiness. Very layered, but I can’t say either way if this is truly a great whisky or one that’s just very different… Certainly not for first time whisky drinkers – You’ll either love it or loathe it. I’d recommend buying a small sample bottle first if possible. Hope this helps, good luck.!

    I just thought...
This is an excellent whiskey but I just thought I’d pop a note here to say that the seller is ripping you off! Near 70 a bottle? This isnt the distillers edition! Buy somewhere else for cheaper.

I picked this up for 37 on prime day and at that price this is a bargain.

I’ve had the 16 before so was expecting a rich, meaty whisky, as soon as I poured the first drop I realised this was a completely different proposition.

The paleness of the whisky is what strikes initially on the plus side we can be pretty sure then no colour is added. On the nose its lighter, like a seaside breeze its gentle and light

On the palate its sweetness is a pleasant surprise up front, before it fades to leave that lagavulin peat I was hoping for, its creamy texture leaves a lovely mouthfeel and the whole balance of this whisky just leaves it very moorish

This isn’t a whisky to punch you in the face with peat like some islays, rather it will relax you into a worn leather chair and gently waft a warming summer coastal breeze that’s carrying some bonfire smoke across your face

Is it better than the 16? To be honest they are so different there is no point comparing, id take it over Laphroig Quarter cask though (another great bargain islay) which is usually a similar price point, and if it falls below 40 again, I’ll be snapping it up

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersTop shelf Islay, at a price
If you’re a long time fan of Lagavulin 16, beware, the 8yr old is a different whisky entirely! In contrast to the 16 I once had a young Lagavulin described to me as “raw meat” compared to “leather jacket”, and on tasting it, I don’t think that’s far off the mark.

Expect bite, but not raw alcohol. Where the 16 is balanced and soft on delivery, this gives a bigger phenol hit up front followed by a lingering salty butter smoke taste. This whisky to me is very similar to Coal Ila 12, so if you’re a fan of that, you won’t be disappointed here. I generally prefer younger Islay whiskies as the peat is at it’s most powerful, and this is no exception. For that reason, I think the 8 is better than the 16, but many would not agree.

Is this worth 10 more than the 16 though? Frankly the limited production of the 8 (and associated costs) probably doesn’t outweigh the cost of the extra 8 years of storage… it’s hard not to feel a bit cheated there, but the whisky still speaks for itself if price is not your main concern. I cannot drop a star as I do love this whisky, but it’s absolutely worth considering picking up a bottle of Coal Ila 12 or Ardbeg 10 instead.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Users... time I came to decide whether or not I like this whisky
By the time I came to decide whether or not I like this whisky, I was down to the very last few drops which were quickly changing in enjoyability by the very nature of whisky, I couldn’t make up my mind or justify what I’ve heard.

My friends speak of huge variances in flavour, smell and that sort of thing, but to me all I could seem to get from was peat, the manure like spice from a cigar in taste with sea water and have a dash of ashy/wood oak finish, and I’m afraid that’s about it. Squeeze a few leathery notes in the smell amongst the peat and perhaps I think I smelled sherry, and that’s that.

Adding water made my lagavulin a little fruitier, the smell of some form of botanic/brewed fizzy pop like julmust or dandelion and burdock, these flavours very quickly were unattainable for me again as the bottle aged after opening.

Perhaps the bottle I had differed wildly from what everyone else as having, but compared to many other whiskies I tried it felt one dimensional and any direction it took was unpleasant after opening, to me it’s not worth the hype that it gets, do I like it? Yes. Would I buy it again? No.

I’ll give this whisky a 4 rather than a 3, since it kept me interested enough to drink most the bottle.

(It’s pricier, but I think I would have preferred Laphroaig 18)
