Having previously purchased the MINI-X and CHEF-X MeatSticks; I am now the proud owner of the newest MeatStick 4-X model. Last year I reviewed the MeatStick CHEF-X, comparing it to my experiences with the MeatStick MINI-X; finding that the CHEF-X was superior in operation. For this review, I am looking at the new MeatStick 4-X model, comparing it directly against the CHEF-X while cooking two whole chickens simultaneously. When I first powered up the CHEF-X, an alert appeared in the MeatStick app indicating that a firmware update was required. I have previously had the same experience on a couple of occasions with my MINI-X and CHEF-X models. The MeatStick developers are continually striving to improve their products and associated app functionality. I’ve noted a number of improvements in the app over the past couple of years since purchasing my original MeatStick MINI-X. When downloading the firmware update ensure that you follow all instructions in order to not interrupt the download in any way, thus compromising the functionality of the unit. As displayed in the attached photos, you can operate multiple MeatSticks at the same time, which is what I did for this review. Once I opened up the MeatStick 4-X packaging, I noted the 4-X is an inch longer than the CHEF-X probe (CHEF-X is 2 1/2 inches vs the 4-X at 3 1/2 inches). This makes the 4-X model well suited to larger cuts of meat. Another useful addition to the 4-X model is the magnets which have been added to the back of the charging base. This provides for a convenient way to attach the base unit to your BBQ or other suitable metal surface during the cooking process. With the rated 650 foot range of the base unit built-in Wi-Fi extender, this provides for much improved operation, compared the the 250 foot range of the former CHEF-X model. During the cooking process for this review I inserted the CHEF-X probe into one whole chicken and my new 4-X probe into a second whole chicken. As depicted in the attached photo, the probes were inserted into the thickest part of the meat. During the cooking process I observed that the two probes were approximately 10 degrees different, which I can attribute to the lemon wedges I had inserted into the cavities of each chicken. One of the probes was found to be stuck into a lemon wedge, which would likely account for the temperature differential during the cooking process. The MeatStick app provides for accurate tracking of the cooking temperature progress and alerts you at various times, letting you know when you’re getting close to the meat internal target temperature and also when the target temperature has been reached. This is managed by the 4 temperature sensors of the probe. One of these temperature sensors is for the black ceramic tip on the probe, which separately tracks the external temperature of the cooking environment (Oven, BBQ, etc) to ensure that temperature limits remain within a safe range.
All things considered, the MeatStick 4-X is by far the best unit I have reviewed. I would highly recommend that you consider purchasing this MeatStick product.

I never particularly liked chicken breast. Whenever I tried it felt like a sole. My first attempt using TheMeatStick was in a chicken breast. Unbelievable outcome! Juice and crunchy, it was the first time in my life that chicken breast tasted better than chicken legs! Believe it or not having a bluetooth thermometer (no matter how expensive might be) is a life changer to the way you perceive food. Since then we tried it in meat and fish with outstanding results! Over and over! I never would have imagined that following rules in internal temperature would affect this much the food. Buy it, no second thought!!!

I already own the Meatstick 4 and love it, so I decided to try out the Meatstick Chef because of its smaller size profile.

The first cook I compared both probes to see how well they were calibrated by placing one in each side of a whole Chicken. To my amazement the app connected to an extender which ended up being the charger for the Meatstick Chef X (I had no idea). Both probes connected to the extender allowing for additional range even though the Meatstick 4 I own isn’t the extended model. The chicken turned out great and both probes were very close to the same temperature throughout the cook.

The next cook I wanted to try something a little out of the norm. My wife makes an amazing home aid lasagna, and she will make enough to freeze in batches so we can pop them in the oven for an easy dinner. When cooking from frozen we are always guessing when to pull it since each batch has slight variations in cook time. The app does not have an option for lasagna specifically, but I was able to do a ‘Quick Cook’ in the app and set my temp to 165 and off I went. When it came out it was at a perfect 165 according to my instant read thermometer and I didn’t have to do anything except wait for the Meatstick app to notify me.

I have tried other brands of wireless probes and Meatstick by far ticks all the boxes for me. The Meatstick Chef X is great for smaller cooks because of its size and I am happy to have it in my arsenal.

If you are considering wireless thermometers try Meatstick. You won’t be disappointed.

      Meatstick Chef X is awesome

I really loved being able to monitor and see the temp on my chicken breast. I cooked two Nashville got chicken breast. One was thin and I used the mini4x on that one. The other was thick and I used my regular size 4x. Both worked awesome and loved being able to see multiple readouts on both pieces. Chicken came out nice and juicy. I also tested the temperature with my gun and the sticks were pretty spot on. Next up I’ll be using both again on a 13 lb briskit in my smoker.

I am by no means a professional cook. However, I have a regular habit of making dinners for myself and friends. I have an affinity for well put together meat recipes. My days of missing the temperature. Mark or now over because this thing is wildly effective as well as intuitive. Cost to benefit ratio is definitely in the customer’s favor if you care at all about serving meat at the appropriate temperature.

If you like gadgets this might be the right product for you. This wireless thermometer is very advanced and provides you a wide range of details to monitor your cooking.
I received the product very quickly after ordering. It arrives without batteries (so make sure you have some at home available). You also need to charge the device for at least four hours before using, which isn’t a problem.

I thought the app usage was a bit inconvenient. You need to create an account, they require A LOT of data, then you also need to leave your location services enables ‘always’, so that experience wasn’t great.
The temperature seems to be very accurate. I didn’t do the tests others did with analog thermometers, but I trusted the process and the meat was at the point expected.

Overall this is a great product and I reccomend it. Would love if the app gets updated and less complex.

I’ve been using the original meatstick for a couple of years now and it’s great. I recently upgraded to the meatstick 4 x. First of all, my app can still run both sticks at the same time so that is a bonus. What I really like about the 4x compared to the original is two things. Firstly, the additional internal sensors. This makes a much more accurate reading, especially in poultry where you’re never sure just how well you placed the probe. Secondly, it’s the built in extender. I have a multi-acre property and I don’t have time to sit around close to my bbq when I’m smoking or doing a roast or full chicken. With my new stick my app can stay connected for quite some distance giving me the freedom to multi task. Love it.
The only improvement I was hoping to see was a built in USB charger. I’m the type who likes to leave things on the charger so I am confident at every use that I have full charge. The batteries do last a long time but murphy’s law has it that when they do run out, I only find out when I’m about to use the stick. Oh, the only other thing about this stick is its size. I’m going to get myself the chef X version as well because this one is too long to be used for steaks or chicken pieces. The stick must be fully inserted or it will get damaged.

eceived the meatstick Chief Xa couple of weeks ago. I had a few cooks on it. Here is my review.
Price: $124.00 on par with other higher end wireless thermometers.
Build Quality: solid build, very good quality, not cheap.
Customer Service: great response time, usually same day or by the next day. Very helpful.
APP: The app is good and intuitive. Lots of presets, and informative information.
The cook: I cooked a steak and it turned out great, precisely cooked.
Test: I preform a ice test and it it 32 degrees spot on. I also preformed a boiling test. It hit 206 degrees and give me a warning that that internal temperature was reaching max. This is a nice feature to have. It advice me to pull the probe to prevent damage. That’s a peace of mind.

Over all I like the shorter probe. Solid build, temperature is spot on, and app is great. Can’t go wrong with this. Amazon does throw them on sell from time to time.

Chief X a very good quality thermometer.

We’ll start with the TLDR : There’s no 4.5 star rating, so it gets a 5-star. Works great if you value the accuracy in your cooking and like to WOW your guests with perfect “unforgiving” protein. 4 sensors might sound like an overkill, but trust me, it is Not! Range is still an issue versus the advertised range in day-to-day usage.

The areas of improvement first, because there is really only one, and that is the range. To be fair, that is an issue with all non-wifi wireless thermometers. Bluetooth can be unreliable and the variations in range and consistency in connection will differ from one household to another. Eitherway, I was experiencing connection losses in certain areas of my house even though it’s relatively open concept and the smoker was fairly close to the house in the backyard. Surprisingly (compared to other products and to older gen MeatSticks), I had no issues with the oven this time around!

Do note I make sure to keep the range extender at a safe but as close as possible distance to the thermometer, generally less than 2 feet away, allowing the range extender to pick-up the signal and “doing it’s thing” of extending the signal to my phone. IMO, Wifi is the solution, so looking forward to a reasonably priced wifi + thermometer (it is still a little on the high end at this time).

Now the good, and there’s a lot of it.

The 4 sensors are accurate in my personal usage, that is smoking and roasting. If you’re making ribs, a 4-sensor thermometer has little added value. However, as soon as you get into thicker pieces of meat, like a large chicken, turkey, brisket, etc.. you start seeing the value and geta better control over your cook/heat. I honestly learned a thing of two and adjusted by smoking of thicker pieces of protein thanks to the new information pulled by a 3 internal sensors system. I am not your typical “serial spritzer” and like to keep my protein sealed in smoke for as long as possible, especially when temperatures drops as you lose a ton of heat from opening a smoker around or below freezing.

The range extender is significantly better than earlier generations, especially when cooking in an oven.

The app is simple to use and works and syncs well with the thermometer – set it up and updated the software in 5-minutes or so. It’s intuitive and provides you with easy to read data. The various temperature alarms work as expected and have saved a pair of st-louis ribs from a malfunctioning pellet smoker.

Value for the money, especially when it goes on sale, is absolutely great, especially when compared to it’s main competitor (you know the one…).

The 4-sensors setup is the centerpiece of this thermometer. The more the better, right? Well I think this hit the sweet spot and anything beyond that is just marketing doing it’s thing. The first two sensors (starting with the tip) will read your protein’s internals, these two should be fairly close in temperature during the cook, otherwise you might be cooking at too high of a temp, especially if you have an “unforgiving protein” (think various steak cuts, chicken breasts, etc..).

The 3rd sensor will capture the temperature of your protein’s outer layer, this one surprised me and confirmed a lot of what I assumed or observed by probing with an instant themometer – this is a big deal as now I have a read on an area I used to only get by opening the smoker (big nono for me) and manually probing. Truth is, in a sense MeatStick set a new standard for myself; I’m not sure I could go back to a dual-sensor (one inner, one outer/ambient) themometer, maybe 3 sensors (probe tip, edge and ambient) but definitely not a single inner sensor.

I was massively impressed with the Meatstick 4x! This is my second Meatstick product, the first was the Meatstick X with extender.
I tested my new 4x with 2 cooks; a smoked/fried turkey for Canadian Thanksgiving, and then a smoked duck.
The app is straightforward to set up and use. Having the presets available makes it even more of a breeze. One thing that I especially like about the app is that you can set multiple alerts. Being notified when the ambient temperature drops out of a specified range is not to be underestimate, and the ‘early warning’ internal temperature alert is so handy! It’s nice to know when to get the sides ready.

I really put the versatility of the Meatstick 4x to the test when I smoked and then deep fried a turkey. Not only did the stick prove reliable and accurate for making sure my smoking temp was right, and that I pulled the bird off at the right internal, but I was amazed at how seamless it was to go right into deep frying without having to take the Meatstick out.
The turkey was delicious and no guess work involved.

The multiple temperature sensors are so useful. No one wants dry turkey, and the ability to measure the internal temp at different points was a game changer.

The smoked duck was much more straightforward. The Meatstick all already had a preset for smoking a whole duck, and I was ready to go in one minute.
I had a couple temperature spikes while cooking the duck, and the Meatstick alerted me as soon as the temperature range was exceeded. Thankfully no burnt duck, thanks to Meatstick!

The battery life is impressively lengthy, and the range using the extender means I can go anywhere in my house and know the exact internal temp of my meat.
Not forgetting that there is even an Apple Watch companion so I can quickly check up on my meat from my wrist.
This stick is even dishwasher safe!

Overall I give this product 5/5 so far. It’s taken my cooking to the next level, and I love the durability and reliability, and I feel like this is a big step up in technology from other meat thermometers on the market.

      Game change

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersThe Meatstick 4x has the same shape as the original meatstick and operates mostly in the same way. The app was a bit clunky and not intuitive at times when I purchased my first meatstick set. But I quickly became familiar with the UI after one or two cook sessions and in just the past few months I’ve noticed that the app has gotten some subtle but helpful updates.

The 4x took everything I liked about the original stick and improved upon it, the additional sensors seemed somewhat gimmicky when I first heard about it but after trying it out, I have to say it’s a phenomenal improvement. I ran it in a brisket and the differences in readings from the 3 sensors really gives you a better idea of what’s going on with the cook. I also wanted to try it in some oven baked salmon which was just a little wider than the length of the stick so watching the first and third sensors (outermost points on the filet) climb nearly 20 degrees higher than the second sensor was interesting. The software registers the lowest temperature of the 3 internal sensors as the cook temperature so from a food safety standpoint you don’t have to worry about reaching safe temperatures for consumption, the app recommends USDA safe cooking temperatures when you setup the cook and compensates for carryover cooking which is absolutely something that occurs. Everyone in our household agrees that since I started using the meatstick for our meals everything seems “more juicy” turns out everything was just being overcooked as we always erred on the safe side when it came to the food being done. Even when I was using an instant read temperature probe, I didn’t compensate for carryover cooking so if I pulled the food when I hit 165 or whatever my target was, I didn’t realize that sitting on the counter it continued to rise nearly 10 degrees! With the meatsick you can clearly see it occur on the time/temperature graphs that it saves. Ambient temperature will plummet while all 3 internal temperature sensors continue to march higher for several minutes.
There were several times when I started using the stick that it would make recommendations that I disregarded and I ended up overshooting my target temperature. Once I started trusting it and using it as a tool to help guide me rather than strictly for observation I got better about hitting target temps, I dont worry about anyone getting sick, and the food just tastes better.

As far as the 4x goes the things I love about it:
      – 4 Sensors are so much better than 2
      – The range, zero communication issues through the cook chamber, and the 4x base provides bluetooth coverage across the majority of the house from my back yard. It’s a dramatic improvement over the range of the original extender bases.
      – The battery life, the original stick already had an absurdly long battery life and the 4x just improves on it. After a 10-hour brisket smoke the app still indicated the stick had a full battery.

The only con I have noticed is the shape of the 4x is a bit more “bullet like” on the tip. The original stick came to a finer point which made inserting the stick into tougher meats more difficult. On long cooks where the meat contracts it seems like the tip geometry causes the stick to work its way out exposing about a quarter inch of the stainless steel probe. This allows the temperature of the 3rd internal sensor to exceed 212 degrees which can damage the probe. The app will begin to warn you that the stick is approaching its limit, you will have to force the stick back into the meat to keep that from happening, over the course of the 10hr brisket cook I needed to reseat the stick twice, once at 4 hours and again at 7 hours. Faster cooking meats do not have this issue.

I’m looking forward to adding a couple more 4x sticks to my collection before cookoff season starts back up next year.

Based on the performance of the MeatStick 4X and its performance outdoors, I decided to order the MeatStick Chef X as with the Canadian climate, at this time of year, the focus shifts to indoor cooking.

My first usage was making steaks in the sous-vide. While not really required as one can’t over cook a steak in a sous vide, it was interesting to see the actual time the steak takes as opposed to the estimate and also what the steak temperature is during the BBQ portion. The time for the steak to cook in the sous vide was approximately hour less than the previous time estimate. I could also adjust the ready temperature a few degrees to compensate for the searing on the BBQ, allowing for the perfect temperature for medium rare steak. I did remove the MeatStick Chef X prior to placing on the infrared burner as the temperature is 1800 degrees and the ambient sensor is not rated for that. After the sear on each side, reinserted the probe and the meat was at 130 degrees, cooked and seared perfectly. The app is as easy to use for sous vide as it was for the outdoor usage.

The next usage was at Canadian Thanksgiving and was used to roast a turkey. The only challenge was ensuring that the probe was inserted into the turkey at the proper depth. Being smaller than the MeatStick 4X made this easier to do. Find the oven roasted turkey setting on the app and set the turkey in the oven. Turkey was roasted to perfection and the probe made sure the turkey wasn’t overly dry or overcooked.

Last trial usage was a roast in the oven and this was easier as the pork was large enough that inserting the probe to the proper depth was easy. Again, select the cooking method and desired “doneness”, preheat the oven, insert the roast and forget. The ability to modify the done temperature is a great feature as we found the app would have the meat slightly more done than our preference. Range was not an issue as I had coverage throughout the house and was able to monitor it regardless of where I was in the house.

Basically, having this probe, removes the worry about cooking meat and one has to try hard to make a mistake. With both the MeatStick 4X and MeatStick Chef X, they delivered excellent results.

It would be great to be able to purchase the MeatStick 4X and the MeatStick Chef X as a set. Having both probes will cover all the different indoor and outdoor cooking methods and also the various cuts of meat. If you enjoy cooking, having both probes is the way to go.

In June of 2022 I purchased a Meatstick Mini and had been enjoying its features and versatility. Although I did not have any problems with the function of the unit itself, the main limitation I did experienced was the range of the built in extender which occasionally prompted a loss of signal to my iPhone app if I walked too far away from the base unit. The stated range (80 m) seemed to be the issue.

When I heard of the new Meatstick Chef X with Quad temperature sensors and a 200 meter range, I knew I had to up my game and try it out. After using the new Meatstick Chef X for the past 3 weeks, I can honestly say that this unit is superior in design.

Upon opening the new Chef X packaging, I took the time to read the enclosed documents and followed all steps relating to the firmware updates and required smart phone permissions settings. As outlined in the directions, ensure you stay with your phone while updating, as there are responses required from you during the process. The set-up of the Chef X was very easy.

The increased range of the Chef X unit (200 m) allows me to walk around the house while preparing our meals without concern of losing the signal from the Meatstick. In addition, I particularly like the Quad temperature sensor feature which thankfully now includes the temperature of the ceramic end piece to ensure that you don’t exceed the stated temperature range of the meat probe (300 degrees Celsius/572 degrees Fahrenheit). This is particularly important when BBQing, as cooking temperatures tend to occasionally rise unexpectedly.
The temperature pre-alerts and end of cook alerts are great, allowing you to focus on cooking your other meals items and not have to revisit the BBQ or oven to periodically check on the cooking progress.

I’ve used the Meatstick in my oven, BBQ and air-fryer and it functions great in all environments.

In my view, there is only one downfall of the Meatstick app though, which did not become apparent until I setup my new Chef X unit. The problem relates to the default title the app applies to the Meatstick unit. When I setup my original Mini X unit, the app applied the name MC3658 to the unit and when I setup my new Chef X unit the app applied the name MN8065. I’m presuming these are arbitrary model titles assigned by the app. These applied titles for each unit really don’t mean anything to the end user if you’re planning on using one Meatstick at a time, but if you plan to use more than one Meatstick at a time when cooking possibly two different meats at the same time, you’re going to initially encounter a temporary problem. I did discover though that this wee problem can be quickly resolved by opening the app, powering up the Meatstick base unit and placing your hand on the temperature probe. After a few seconds, the temperature will be displayed in the app on one of the two units; in my case either unit MN8065 (Chef X) or MC3658 (Mini X). Since both the Meatstick Mini X and Chef X probes are identical in appearance, I also took the extra precaution of placing a small dot of nail polish on the ceramic probe of my original Mini X probe so I can tell them apart.
The preferred solution to this problem is to have the Meatstick app developers include a feature where the customer can, during the app setup process, edit the name to something they prefer, which in my situation would simply be Mini X or Chef X. I hope to see this change in an upcoming app update!

All things considered; this is a quality product which performs as described.

It works perfectly once it is installed…and easy to use. Precise temp. reading. It was a bit complicated to have it works. The first two I received did not connect to my phone. But the company sent me two new ones that worked fine. So, I am very satisfied.
