Works out of the box using the kernel’s pl2303 module.

The red light is quite bright and illuminated constantly. I’m not sure what the different colours mean; yellow flickers when data is transferred and I’m not sure what makes the green one light up… but if it ever does, I’m afraid it will do so with the brightness of a thousand suns.

At least the LEDs aren’t blue!

I needed this device to interface a piece of test equipment to my PC, running Windows 10. RS 232 isn’t always the easiest interface to manage, but I plugged this lead into the PC, set the terminal software to 8-n-1 format and 9600baud. Windows set this device up as COM6. Plugged the D connector into the remote device and they started communicating with no fuss at all!
The LEDS for Power, TxD and RxD are handy to prove data is moving, although they are out of sight most of the time. I have been able to test this cable at 9600 and 115,200baud with no apparent issues.
    Great little adapter.

Does its job even with plenty of electrical noise to go around. Well worth the extra few quid compared to the cheaper ones you see about. Not a budget item but if you want quality this is for you. Compatible with Windows, Linux and FreeBSD; haven’t tried anything else but I’d be willing to bet it’ll work with anything that has USB.

This product did exactly what it said on the tin! It reprogrammed my telescope from my laptop’s USB port over an RS232 connection. I have had problems in the past with other similar devices under Windows 7. I found a similar one in the past but it does not have a driver for my new Win 10 64 bit laptop. This VTOP device worked first time, it installed the driver, and then reprogrammed my telescope no problem! PLEASE NOTE that this device installed on my laptop as COM5 serial channel . I am not sure whether one can change this in the software driver, so make sure that you do not already have something running on COM5. It also has three LEDs on it so you can see it’s working! Highly recommended!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersPurchased this to connect a GPS dongle with a very…very long cable to a raspberry pi running Debian Jessie which acts as a time server / clock for a hospital radio station I engineer for, they don’t have the internet, but do need to keep accurate time so they can “hit” the news which they receive via satellite.

Works perfectly, no additional drivers as such to get it working, but if you are using it for the same purpose as me, you’ll need to apt-get install pps-tools to allow the time to be super accurate.

I like serial and ps2, you can run them over huge distances compared to USB without an special boxes if you know what you are doing, long live RS232!
