Short cable, but hey, you need it in reach of your laptop.
Plugged it in and it does what it says on the tin. I believe its not suitable for Bluetooth. Some say a bit noisy I found it acceptable
I bought this for one reason – my MacBook Pro wouldn’t boot, and then wouldn’t read the OSX install disc. This connected easily, read the install DVD and now I have a working MacBook Pro. Can’t speak about the longevity or anything else right now.
Exactly as described. It’s an external disc drive with extra ports on it to make up for the port it used up. On Linux this will read music discs but you won’t get any metadata and switching between songs will be slow if you don’t use appropriate software. On Ubuntu, Sound Juicer does the job.
I’m not sufficiently tech-savvy to be able to install a new CD/DVD reader/writer into my desktop (the old one died!), so opted for an external drive instead. My only slight criticism is that the supplied USB lead is a bit short for my particular set-up – but that’s nit-picking!
Highly recommended!
I have not used it much yet.
But it has worked just as intended.
Comment though: the cable with both USB C & A, to plug to the computer, is a bit on the short side
Only have it a week. No problem – just plugged in and it worked. If I thought it would continue to work as it is now I would give it 5 stars. I am wary due to all these makes getting some bad reviews. I have no reason to think otherwise.
Great little CD player that does everything I need it for. Only downside was that the connection cord is much too short, therefore player has to be placed very near my laptop which isn’t always convenient.
Product excellent, easy to use and set up. Good value for money. Unfortunately, yet again Amazon delivery let overall service down. Driver made no attempt to knock on door even though was in residence and left item outside in unsafe area, by wheelie bin.
We really liked this external reader/writer.
Just fyi though, there are still some minor compatibility problems as we had to download VLC media player when Windows media player stopped working all of a sudden.
However apart from this, the product is really superb! Fast, easy to use. Hardly any noise etc.
This has been used a few times now, attached to two different laptops and has worked without a hitch.
On the downside, the captive USB lead is really short (25cm); enough that siting the drive for use can be quite awkward, especially if you are using the USB-C plug.
On the upside, you only need one of the USB plugs, unlike my previous disc drive which required two available sockets for it to work. In fact, the drive actually adds to my USB socket-count.
Overall, this is a very decent product, but I will be buying an extension lead.
TL:DR – a bit faffy setting up with a Mac but it will get there in the end.
I found this a bit tempermental to begin with – my first few attempts at playing a Blu-Ray amounted to a lot of whirring but no sign of the disc showing up anywhere on the desktop. Restarting the laptop, and then alternating between having the drive connected to power and not, the Blu-Ray eventually showed up but I was initially still unable to play it. Based on asking a question and reading other reviews, my understanding was that with a Mac product, having VLC already installed would be sufficient – however, I found that wasn’t the case (it couldn’t read a protected Blu-Ray). I followed online instructions and installed the required key and library files in the correct locations but my MacBook said that it couldn’t verify the developer of the library file and therefore wouldn’t let me use it due to risk of malware. So VLC is a no-go for me with Blu-Rays. I didn’t want to pay for Blu-Ray player software (at this point I still wasn’t sure if the drive worked properly), so downloaded the free Leawo software (which has a fairly crap interface but is functional) – and was then able to play the Blu-Ray. I tried switching off and restarting several times to test that the drive was consistent, and it did successfully play the Blu-Ray each time after that point. I can’t speak as to long term viability, but the drive does do what I require (simply play Blu-Rays on my MacBook Air) and seems decent value for money given the prices of some of the better-known brands.
