Reasonable priced accessory for my new laptop
Short cable, but hey, you need it in reach of your laptop.
Plugged it in and it does what it says on the tin. I believe its not suitable for Bluetooth. Some say a bit noisy I found it acceptable

    Works on 2012 MacBook Pro
I bought this for one reason – my MacBook Pro wouldn’t boot, and then wouldn’t read the OSX install disc. This connected easily, read the install DVD and now I have a working MacBook Pro. Can’t speak about the longevity or anything else right now.

    Exactly as described
Exactly as described. It’s an external disc drive with extra ports on it to make up for the port it used up. On Linux this will read music discs but you won’t get any metadata and switching between songs will be slow if you don’t use appropriate software. On Ubuntu, Sound Juicer does the job.

    Does the job!
I’m not sufficiently tech-savvy to be able to install a new CD/DVD reader/writer into my desktop (the old one died!), so opted for an external drive instead. My only slight criticism is that the supplied USB lead is a bit short for my particular set-up – but that’s nit-picking!
    Highly recommended!

    So far so good
I have not used it much yet.
But it has worked just as intended.
Comment though: the cable with both USB C & A, to plug to the computer, is a bit on the short side

    Good so far.
Only have it a week. No problem – just plugged in and it worked. If I thought it would continue to work as it is now I would give it 5 stars. I am wary due to all these makes getting some bad reviews. I have no reason to think otherwise.

    Great little CD playe
Great little CD player that does everything I need it for. Only downside was that the connection cord is much too short, therefore player has to be placed very near my laptop which isn’t always convenient.

Works on Linux but no Linux dvd player software available.
Works well on Linux for data files but no Linux dvd player software apears to be available for Ubuntu Linux on this drive. The only option is to try and capture the video on a Windows pc and save it as a mp4 file. Mp4 files play fine from the drive., But copying is very time consuming.

When you dont have a bootable drive you need this
I bought this because a 1U server I got needed a DVD to boot from. My new Laptop does not have a disc but what does these days. The USB 3 cable fits into the body of the case, and it’s totally flat and secure.
Yes, you can use it as a hub and plug everything else into it.
The downside, is when using Nero to burn an ISO image onto a Blu-Ray disk part way thru the drive became disconnected, as tho it was unplugged. Not good when burning an image and Blu Ray disks are cheap.
Watching a movie disk is perfect.
For me its good value for money just worry about what state your PC has to be in when burning a disk, using Nero from my Workstation (that i tried this device on) worked perfectly with my built in Blu-ray burner, same ISO image, same media.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersItem good but appalling delivery.
Product excellent, easy to use and set up. Good value for money. Unfortunately, yet again Amazon delivery let overall service down. Driver made no attempt to knock on door even though was in residence and left item outside in unsafe area, by wheelie bin.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWorks fine ripping CDs
Bought this as the CD/DVD drive on the desktop PC had stopped working. I used it to rip CDs to FLAC files using dbPoweramp. It works just fine for me and I’m very happy with it.

A few things to note. I first tried connecting it up with an independent USB cable and it wasn’t happy with that, but it was fine using the embedded cable. The instructions recommend using a USB port on the rear of the PC; I used one on the front and it was fine. The drawer of the unit is not a substantial thing, it’s quite flimsy so gentle treatment is required when inserting a disc. I didn’t need to download the media player that others have recommended but that’s my good fortune, as it seems to be a common recommendation in reviews here you’d do well to be aware of it. Finally, when I tried using this with a laptop it didn’t work at all unless the laptop was plugged into the mains using the laptop charger cable, then all was fine.

Otherwise, it’s all fine. It’s small and light rather than big and robust, so don’t expect it to stand up to too much rough treatment. With the caveats noted, I’m happy to recommend this.

    Excellent spec
We really liked this external reader/writer.
Just fyi though, there are still some minor compatibility problems as we had to download VLC media player when Windows media player stopped working all of a sudden.
However apart from this, the product is really superb! Fast, easy to use. Hardly any noise etc.

You may require an extension lead
This has been used a few times now, attached to two different laptops and has worked without a hitch.
On the downside, the captive USB lead is really short (25cm); enough that siting the drive for use can be quite awkward, especially if you are using the USB-C plug.
On the upside, you only need one of the USB plugs, unlike my previous disc drive which required two available sockets for it to work. In fact, the drive actually adds to my USB socket-count.
Overall, this is a very decent product, but I will be buying an extension lead.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersWorks with MacBook Air once Blu-Ray Player software installed
TL:DR – a bit faffy setting up with a Mac but it will get there in the end.
I found this a bit tempermental to begin with – my first few attempts at playing a Blu-Ray amounted to a lot of whirring but no sign of the disc showing up anywhere on the desktop. Restarting the laptop, and then alternating between having the drive connected to power and not, the Blu-Ray eventually showed up but I was initially still unable to play it. Based on asking a question and reading other reviews, my understanding was that with a Mac product, having VLC already installed would be sufficient – however, I found that wasn’t the case (it couldn’t read a protected Blu-Ray). I followed online instructions and installed the required key and library files in the correct locations but my MacBook said that it couldn’t verify the developer of the library file and therefore wouldn’t let me use it due to risk of malware. So VLC is a no-go for me with Blu-Rays. I didn’t want to pay for Blu-Ray player software (at this point I still wasn’t sure if the drive worked properly), so downloaded the free Leawo software (which has a fairly crap interface but is functional) – and was then able to play the Blu-Ray. I tried switching off and restarting several times to test that the drive was consistent, and it did successfully play the Blu-Ray each time after that point. I can’t speak as to long term viability, but the drive does do what I require (simply play Blu-Rays on my MacBook Air) and seems decent value for money given the prices of some of the better-known brands.
