If you like peaty, smoky, oaky whisky – this is the very, very best you can get under 50. Absolutely nothing more needs to be or can be said. One of the greatest mass-production whiskies ever made. Period.
A very nice peated whisky.
I really love peated whisky and have tried many including Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Talisker, Laphroaig Lore and Laphroaig 10 year and I do prefer the Laphroaig 10 year.
Having said that this is still a really nice whisky.
Although I like the ABV I prefer the 10 as it’s almost like the flavour of the QC finishes too soon. QCs ABV plus in the 10 would be perfect but my next purchase may have to be the cask strength.
Lovely peated whisky with a spicy and smokey flavour. I also like Caol Ila and this is not too far from it. I’m not sure which is better – they are just a little different. According to my palette, slightly more peated. I’ve also tried with a drop of water which works really well. I’d be happy to buy again.
A nice tipple, a whiskey I have bought on several occasions, nice on its own or with a drop of water, my preference is to drink neat to enjoy the full flavour, good value for money too
I think it pertinent to point out this review was written by my partner, particularly in view of the last sentence!! Anyway……Those quarter casks do some proper heavy lifting! It punts the 10 year old into the (it must be said, very pretty) scenery. if you like a good peaty, iodiney, smokey, full flavoured Islay job then this’ll fit the bill perfectly. I’ve just about killed my second bottle this year and i swear my balls have got hairier.
Got it on a deal from Amazon, so no complaints about the price. It’s one of my favourite Islay whiskeys and you just can’t go wrong with it if you like the peaty, smoky flavour.
I’m not a whisky aficionado buy I love peaty whiskies (you know the ones that smell and taste of leather, tobacco and old professors’ studies). This is outstanding and definitely one to get your knees knocking! Enjoy!
Forget socks and pants and gadgets. Your man wants a bottle of Scotch. This one wins every single time. Lovely smooth peated taste, comes in a stylish gift tube, and includes a wee voucher to “own” a piece of the estate. Brilliant value for money and such a reliable brand.
By the way, anyone who thinks Morrison’s sell this for 22 is confusing it for the far inferior Select which I advise any whisky fan to run a mile from. Slainte!
Bought this as a treat for myself. The aroma on opening is wonderful and I couldn’t resist a wee dram. The shecond glass was even tastier and thee fird wash even bitter thin the win before and you are my besht mate and I luv yoo buddy and niw I hiv drinked the bokkle dry ;-/
I had my first taste of Laphroaig way back in the early 80s, at a pub in Weasenham All Saints in Norfolk (The Ostrich – a fabulous pub. Remember pubs?) A proper, grown up single malt whisky. Quarter Cask is a proper, grown up single malt whisky on steroids – amazing, deep, rich, smoky, and very intoxicating. I had to add a little water…lovely!!
Don’t really touch whisky however a review noted that it was from a quality distillery and had an outstanding taste and at almost half price I took a punt. Stunning flavour and totally unexpected smoothness which I did not expect at all from whisky. Read about the peaty flavour and they where correct, very peaty and I just loved it. Normally whisky tastes like gone off petrol, seriously. Not this, have almost finished the bottle and when the price comes down to what I paid for it this time I will purchase several fer sure. I cannot justify spending almost half a days wage on something as impractical as booze, even this quality, but it’s a close call …….!
Its a great whiskey, not as “iodiney” as the 10, its more refined the peat and iodine notes doesn’t reach out and grab you by the throat like the 10 year old, the extra ABV doesn’t over power the whiskey and its a relatively easy sipper (if you like peat). This is much better the 10 year old, which I find almost synthetic in its mouth feel and for me the dampening down of the medicinal notes is a benefit. I may even prefer it to the 10 cask strength version!
Exceptional whisky for the price (if on offer, which it usually is!)
I find as the age of Laphroaig goes up the smoke mellows and that is not what I am looking for in a bottle of Laphroaig.
Bottled at 48% which gives it a beautiful kick and flavour intensity.
Non chill filtered which is also an added bonus.
Lovely sweetness to it before you get the iodine and smoke slapping you round the chops.
I come back to this whisky again and again. Once I have a glass, other whiskies get ignored for the night.
Being a peaty Islay whisky, this will be a bit like Marmite, you’ll either love it or hate it! Personally I absolutely love it! Nothing better than sitting in my garden on a cool cloudy evening with a dram of this stuff, taking in the bonfire/smoky notes. Little bit of tcp, but that has mellowed as the bottle has gone down, and truthfully there is plenty of sweetness underneath it all too. really love the ashy finish on it too. Great stuff!
Professional whisky experts describe it as following.
Nose: Oily and buttery nose, with toffee, nuttiness, hickory, bicarbonate of soda, rum and raisin ice cream and zest.
Palate: Big rush of sweetness, in fact, it’s an explosion of sweetness, with fiery chilli heat, TCP, sweet cereals and a touch of cola syrup.
Finish: Medium-length, but becomes fruity, with custard and cigar smoke.
This is a drink you enjoy slowly and in small quantities, excellent as a gift or to offer to your house guests. The drink and bottle just radiate elegance and prestige. It may be a bit pricey but it is definitely worth it since it can last you a while.
The first tasting didn’t go well, whilst smooth the strong peaty taste was left with a kind of medicinal flavour. Adding a little water helped but there is no getting away from it, this is a whisky full of flavour.
The second tasting went a little better, the whisky seemed to have mellowed a little and that taste I describe as peaty and medicinal was still there but I enjoyed it.
The final tasting left the bottle empty and me wanting more. I will buy it again but only after trying many other great whiskies I haven’t got round to trying yet. It does have a very nuanced taste and that’s what I liked about it, it stands apart from many of the whiskies I have tried thus far.
Update:
I didn’t know it at the time of this order, but this is the peatiest of the Islay whiskies available so although recommended, if you haven’t tried a peaty malt yet then you may want to try a lighter peaty malt.
Happy drinking!
I bought this whisky to try just on an off chance because I like a peaty whisky and it was on a fantastic offer. To preface, I’m usually a Lagavulin 16 drinker so I am used to a heavy peaty whisky. This whisky was great value for the quality, flavour, and over all experience.
I shared this with my grandfather and he asked me to immediately get him a bottle. This is a great step up from your Laphroaig 10 at a great price. Highly recommended.
The way things have been going at Laphroaig since 2018, I’d say that it’s pretty likely that the price of this will increase considerably in the next few years – you only need to look at what’s happened to the price of their annual Cask Strength and Cairdeas releases over the past few years to see that they are increasingly adopting a gouging approach (see also Aberlour A’bunadh). This being the case, I always make sure I have a few bottles of this in the cupboard under the stairs to try and dodge the inevitable price rise!
What can you say about Laphroaig that hasn’t been said thousands of times….This surprised in that it doesn’t have any of the mint medicinal phenols of the legendary 10 which actually helps to balance the flavours…. (in my humble opinion). There is still sweetness and smoke but in a much more open and forthright way. It’s a little gem and one that will go straight into my staple circulation.
I bought this in Amazon Prime Day sales, attracted by the bargain price. I don’t normally like Islay whiskies (they’re too peaty) but served this to friends who do enjoy Islay whiskies. They were raving about it so I decided to give it a try myself. It still had the unmistakable peatiness of Islay, but I was surprised by the sweetness. I’ve got friends who are very happy with my choice and a whisky that I think I will grow to appreciate myself.
This is perhaps my all time favourite whiskey. One of my closest friends has recently acquired a taste for whiskey, and said he liked Johnny Walker double black – oh dear. I had to surprise him with a bottle of Laphroaig quarter cask for his birthday.
This whiskey is amazing. Smokey. Smoke. Did I say smokey? Smokey. Reeaallyy smokey. Drinking this is an experience every time, it’s a wallop to the palate. It smells like classic Laphroaig, salty ambesol. The first sip is a tongue singeing melody of ashes, smoke, and peat. It’s truly great.
I love i
I only gave it 4 star for value cos its not cheap, only 3 stars for giftable cos who the hell would want to give this away as a gift to anyone unless you are so nine parts to the wind that you don’t know what you’re doing! I wont even share mine with any of my friends its that good I want to savour the flavour for myself & sod that at these prices, & im English not Scottish, sorry jocks didn’t mean it, here’s to ya for making such a good whisky to have a wee dram or 2, or 3 or 4! Doubles of course he! he! But don’t tell me wife that or she wont but me another bottle. You might have tried the 10yr old now that’s good but the quarter cask has that something special that you’ll only get out on special occasions. You’ve gotta be some real sought of man to drink this, so bottoms up. You’ve been warned!
The only other whisky from this distiller that I’ve tried is the 10 year old, which I really liked. When the bottle ran dry recently, I replaced it with the Quarter Cask. I like this one, too, very much, and would be hard pressed to choose between the two. Very reasonably priced IMO, and bursting with intense flavours of peat and smoke, with a nice balancing sweetness. I’ll leave it to other reviewers to eulogize further, but will say that for me this is a delicious peated single malt, and a whole lot of whisky for your money.
This feels like it just has far too much going on. I’m a big fan of the 10 because of it’s big, bold, rich, distinctive flavors but this just tastes like a bit of a mess. A few drops of water does really helps to open it up, but it still just tastes too busy. If you’re looking for a change from the 10 then I’d say give this a go but if it’s between this and the 10 then you should definitely go for the 10.
I don’t blame the seller, but i blame laphroaig’s quarter cask, it’s not up to scratch. (your results may vary, if your bottle comes from a different vat – this is true for all cask-strength whisky, not just this one)
3 stars, but voted 4 stars because it’s not the seller’s fault, and .. i mean, it wasn’t BAD, it just wasnt as great as i imagined it to be.
