I think it pertinent to point out this review was written by my partner, particularly in view of the last sentence!! Anyway……Those quarter casks do some proper heavy lifting! It punts the 10 year old into the (it must be said, very pretty) scenery. if you like a good peaty, iodiney, smokey, full flavoured Islay job then this’ll fit the bill perfectly. I’ve just about killed my second bottle this year and i swear my balls have got hairier.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI wasn’t expecting to like this more than Laphroaig 10, but I’m pleasantly suprised that I do. Vanilla, peat, a sweet brine, and freshly cut oakwood on the nose. All of those things plus a creamy eggy custard on the palate. I notice more peat on the palate than I do with the 10. That’s probably due to it’s youth, and certainly isn’t a bad thing as far as I’m concerned. Considering the extra 8% alcohol content and more youthful age, I was surprised that this QC has a much “smoother” mouth finish, and provides just the right amount of chest warmth on the the way down, whereas the 10 is a bit rougher and hotter. I highly recommend this dram to any Islay lovers!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersDefinitely Laphroaig, with (probably) less time in more wood giving more oak note of vanilla and spice that you don’t get from the 10yo but with the boldness and pungency we expect. Sweeter than the 10, still salty and medicinal but less of both compared to the 10 – in my view this makes it slightly less interesting but you may disagree! Very long finish. 48% and not chill filtered, so bottled with integrity (excepting the inevitable dose of caramel – we can’t win them all). I have added this to my whisky cabinet staple – the only NAS whisky I have allowed in that hallowed space.

By the way, anyone who thinks Morrison’s sell this for 22 is confusing it for the far inferior Select which I advise any whisky fan to run a mile from. Slainte!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI’m a big fan of bold whisky, particularly the peaty/smokey Islay malts with Laphroaig been one of my all time favourites. Ignore any negative reviews complaining about medicinal comparisons. The 10 year is a standard by which to measure against. The Quarter Cask has no age statement but that does not detract from its quality. I find it to be well rounded with layered depth of flavour. The peat hits straight off but there is a hint of sweetness that matures the flavour on the palate. I always drink neat and find the QC to be engaging with a moreish quality, it’s easy to quaff half a bottle without realising. I’d actually put it ahead on the 10yo. I could go on and get all technical but wanted to keep this brief. Very highly recommended, especially when on Lightening Deal!

Don’t really touch whisky however a review noted that it was from a quality distillery and had an outstanding taste and at almost half price I took a punt. Stunning flavour and totally unexpected smoothness which I did not expect at all from whisky. Read about the peaty flavour and they where correct, very peaty and I just loved it. Normally whisky tastes like gone off petrol, seriously. Not this, have almost finished the bottle and when the price comes down to what I paid for it this time I will purchase several fer sure. I cannot justify spending almost half a days wage on something as impractical as booze, even this quality, but it’s a close call …….!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersAfter trying Laphroaig’s truly awful “select” I wasn’t expecting much from this No Age Statement offering, but I held out hope and bottled at 48%, non chill filtered and on offer for 30 I thought I’d give Laphroaig another shot to win me over.

Its a great whiskey, not as “iodiney” as the 10, its more refined the peat and iodine notes doesn’t reach out and grab you by the throat like the 10 year old, the extra ABV doesn’t over power the whiskey and its a relatively easy sipper (if you like peat). This is much better the 10 year old, which I find almost synthetic in its mouth feel and for me the dampening down of the medicinal notes is a benefit. I may even prefer it to the 10 cask strength version!

Exceptional whisky for the price (if on offer, which it usually is!)

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThis whisky gives you this warm, comforting feeling something akin sitting next to a fireplace in the winter. To me, the flavour is very tasty and interesting, it is full-bodied, and the bite comes at the end of a sip. The taste lingers for a while, which is pretty great. I find that adding water really helps to open up the whisky and releases the flavours hidden by strong bite.

Professional whisky experts describe it as following.
Nose: Oily and buttery nose, with toffee, nuttiness, hickory, bicarbonate of soda, rum and raisin ice cream and zest.
Palate: Big rush of sweetness, in fact, it’s an explosion of sweetness, with fiery chilli heat, TCP, sweet cereals and a touch of cola syrup.
Finish: Medium-length, but becomes fruity, with custard and cigar smoke.

This is a drink you enjoy slowly and in small quantities, excellent as a gift or to offer to your house guests. The drink and bottle just radiate elegance and prestige. It may be a bit pricey but it is definitely worth it since it can last you a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soft and velvety taste followed by peatiness

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs a drinker of smooth easy-going single malts, this was like a slap in the face. However, I have been keen to try different whiskies and so when this became available for 28, I bought myself a bottle.

The first tasting didn’t go well, whilst smooth the strong peaty taste was left with a kind of medicinal flavour. Adding a little water helped but there is no getting away from it, this is a whisky full of flavour.

The second tasting went a little better, the whisky seemed to have mellowed a little and that taste I describe as peaty and medicinal was still there but I enjoyed it.

The final tasting left the bottle empty and me wanting more. I will buy it again but only after trying many other great whiskies I haven’t got round to trying yet. It does have a very nuanced taste and that’s what I liked about it, it stands apart from many of the whiskies I have tried thus far.

    Update:

I didn’t know it at the time of this order, but this is the peatiest of the Islay whiskies available so although recommended, if you haven’t tried a peaty malt yet then you may want to try a lighter peaty malt.

    Happy drinking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slap in the face!

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersI love Islay whiskies and although Lagavulin 16yo is my favourite regular tipple, it’s very difficult to beat Laphroaig Quarter Cask for value. It’s regularly available on Amazon for the insane price of about 28 and when it is, I make sure that I stock up. If you’re looking for an introduction to whisky, I would look elsewhere. If you’re looking for an introduction to Islay whisky, I would also look elsewhere. However, if you already know that you like punchy Islay malts and if you want something just a little bit off the well-trodden path, you simply cannot go wrong with this stuff. It’s outstanding: immensely flavourful, packed full of peat-smoke, sea-air and iodine – like Laphroaig 10yo on steroids. At 48% ABV, it’s also a good bit stronger than the regular Laphroaig 10yo (40% ABV) which makes it even better value for money. It’s not as immediately accessible as the 10yo (which itself is not everyone’s cup of tea) but if you stick with the Quarter Cask, you’ll find it hard to go back to the 10yo afterwards.

The way things have been going at Laphroaig since 2018, I’d say that it’s pretty likely that the price of this will increase considerably in the next few years – you only need to look at what’s happened to the price of their annual Cask Strength and Cairdeas releases over the past few years to see that they are increasingly adopting a gouging approach (see also Aberlour A’bunadh). This being the case, I always make sure I have a few bottles of this in the cupboard under the stairs to try and dodge the inevitable price rise!

I only gave it 4 star for value cos its not cheap, only 3 stars for giftable cos who the hell would want to give this away as a gift to anyone unless you are so nine parts to the wind that you don’t know what you’re doing! I wont even share mine with any of my friends its that good I want to savour the flavour for myself & sod that at these prices, & im English not Scottish, sorry jocks didn’t mean it, here’s to ya for making such a good whisky to have a wee dram or 2, or 3 or 4! Doubles of course he! he! But don’t tell me wife that or she wont but me another bottle. You might have tried the 10yr old now that’s good but the quarter cask has that something special that you’ll only get out on special occasions. You’ve gotta be some real sought of man to drink this, so bottoms up. You’ve been warned!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLaphroaig (Port Ellen, Scotland) is a distillery on Islay, famous for its mostly heavily peated whisky. Other famous Islay whiskies include Bowmore, Lagavulin and Caol Ila. This whisky is first matured in bourbon casks, and then matured in small casks (quarter casks) which allow 30% more surface area contact than regular casks. This allows for faster aging of the spirit. It’s thought that this whisky is about 6 years old but tastes like a 10. Islay whiskies are a funny thing for me. Love it one evening, hate it another. I reckon you really have to be in the mood for this peated monster. I’ve been known to spit out a mouthful! Anyway, there is smoke, iodine, sea, coffee and treacle for me but you’ll probably taste something completely different. It’s a wonderful bottle though (when the moods right) but more often than not I’ll go for my Craigellachie when I want something easy to drink.
