What a shame I would have loved to have awarded this writing set 5 stars but for the pen holder which proves non-pragmatic

Sure the holder does it’s most basic function which is the ability to hold the pen and sure the aesthetics ties in with the pen itself but it lacks any real base and more essentially weight, weighing in at 30g to the pen’s 25g. This in turn means that the holder capsizes too easily whilst holding the pen.

Aside from that you really are looking at a 5 here, with beauty that I had never witnessed in a writing pen. The metal gears that drive into the feathered hue remind me of something that would come out of Final Fantasy.

Then comes the writing experience with the various nibs, absolutely second to none with the expected and acceptable limitation as to how far the in will stretch. The variety of tips not only feel different but convey different, bringing the desired effect.

This is now my number one pen for greetings cards, a true exception.

So brilliant to learn a new skill. A great set.

Well made, very nice lines, easy to load with ink. This is a real winner, it really is.

If you have ever wanted to write like a fifth-century monk then look no further.

This is a calligraphy set by Hethrone, a brand I’d not come across before. It comes nicely presented in a box with an old-dashed world map design. Inside, there’s a cardboard insert which holds all the bits and pieces in place safely.

You get the pen itself, a bottle of ink, a copper-coloured base and 10 nibs. It’s everything you need to get started, and I really like how well it’s presented so I think it’d make a lovely gift, too.

The quill pen has a copper-coloured barrel, green faux feather and golden detailing that features several cogs and a wing. It has a steampunk feel to it and it’s very novel, very different to your bog standard calligraphy pen. It looks fantastic and it’s more robust than I’d anticipated as the cog/wing detail is all metal. The only tiny thing is that the feather is obviously not real but there’s some sparseness at the top. Not a big deal, and that’s the only tiny thing I’ve noticed that isn’t as great.

The little bottle of ink is “non-toxic” and you get a good range of nibs to offer ample choice. The pen writes nicely and I like that there’s ink included to start you off. I’m awful at it as I’d not tried it before so I doubt the ink will last me too long, but I’m more than happy to get more. I’ve only used the main nib it came with thus far and that has been smooth to use. I’d say the price is really good at 12.99 for what you get and the quality of it.

There’s no guide or tips for calligraphy writing so it’s not a learners set. If you need tips on that though there’ll obviously be lots for free online. This is a brilliant gift set as it’s so well presented and I like the old-fashioned captain’s log and World Map detailing. It’d be good for self-gifting for those wanting to learn calligraphy just as much as those who’re already good at it. I could see it being a nice collectors item or for someone wanting it as decoration even.

All in all, a beautiful calligraphy set with a stunning and novel steampunk-esque quill pen.

As the title states, taking into consideration the price. It’s a full set that works, although some of the nibs aren’t particularly great but this might be the ink as well.
Out of the box, isn’t too heavy, nice feather size. I found the steampunk aesthetic quite comfortable to use, it helps to balance itself on your hand. As long as it’s in the right place. I managed to wobble it free a little since it’s only held in with glue (probably hot glue) it can be wiggled free as it’s not held that securely. No real big deal, does mean you can rotate it if you put a nib in slightly wrong.
The cogs and fake jewel are all well made little pieces though.
The pen holder, with a nib, needs to be placed with care cause it’s not big enough to balance the weight out when the pen hits the side. Doesn’t seem to be any soft surfaces for the nib to land on either so probably best be careful when using if you don’t take the nib out.
Ink comes in a seal bag and also has a rubber bung in it, and it comes with ink. So you can get started straight away.
The stock nib is probably a typical fountain pen style nib. Smooth rights with the ball on the end.
All the other tips are a bit scratchy but might just be my technique.
The ones of the left are all reasonable and useable if you need fine writing.
The ones of the right, some are usable, some the reservoirs hold the ink too well and don’t release it or release it quite quickly. Pretty shoddy most of them to be honest. Again, might just be my technique but the wider you went, the more quickly they dumped the ink and not in a useable way.

As a gift set or a show piece. Maybe if you’re just going to use the fountain pen nib or the thinner nibs, it’s useable. Not the most fun experience but as the title states.. for the price, you get everything you need here to start and a bit of a ‘showy’ piece if you like the steampunk kind of aesthetic.
12.99 is reasonable price and quality is reasonable enough if you go into it think it’s more of a novelty gift or show piece.
