My quest for the perfect kids’ water bottle ended when I stumbled upon this little gem with a built-in straw. It’s like someone took the essence of childproofing, mixed it with a dash of practicality, and poured it into this bottle. The vibrant colours and patterns are a hit with the kids, making hydration seem like less of a chore and more of an adventure. It’s survived more drops than I can count, testament to its durability, and the straw feature means I’m not constantly cleaning up spills. However, convincing my kids that the water bottle isn’t a toy is a daily battle, especially with the intriguing straw mechanism. I’d recommend it to any parent looking for a fuss-free way to keep their kids hydrated, with the added bonus of it being as sturdy as their endless energy reserves.
This is another quality water bottle from ION8.
ION8 have a variety of different water bottle designs. With this one, the key differentiator for me is the big straw and solid spout. My kids have the tendency to chew on the silicone straws (which means they don’t last as long). But this hard plastic spout combined with a very wide inbuilt straw is excellent, and allows for the easy sucking up of water. And reassuringly BPA free.
Whilst this bottle isn’t insulated (which means you get more capacity for the same volume), it’s still made from the same quality materials as the other bottles in the ION8 range. The frosted plastic bottle has so far resisted the bumps, scrapes and drops that my children have inflicted upon it. And the lid is completely water tight when shut.
This bottle holds 350ml which is great for small children (my 4 year old loves it) and the frosted but transparent bottle means you can see how much liquid is left (or has been drunk). And it can be washed in the dishwasher!
Overall, this is a well thought through, well designed water bottle, great for children.
Most importantly, this bottle does not leak when it contains a cold liquid and provided the lid is locked shut. The finish is very tactile, the built in straw component works incredibly well and the way it has been designed discourages biting or chewing of the mouthpiece. The lock mechanism is effective and easy to use one-handed as advertised and the lid contains a carrying ring so you can carry it with one finger. So far, so good.
On the downside, this bottle (500 ml size) is quite heavy before it is even filled which is no problem if you are using it in a static location but I would not fancy lugging this around while on the move. It comes with a list of “do not” instructions which include do not use with carbonated drinks and do not use brushes (or abrasives) to clean. Now this last element gives me particular cause for concern because whilst the straw is certainly wider than most – meaning that it should clean effectively in a dishwasher – when it comes to reusable straws I only really trust a good, soapy brush. It is also a bit of a pain to disassemble. I think a solution for the manufacturer would be to include a spare straw, tell the consumer they can use a brush on the straw only but to dispose of the straws if/when they show signs of degradation from cleaning.
I’ve had a few bottles from Ion8, some with various designs and also plain ones like this red one and the reason I’ve ordered more is simply because they’re good for what they’re designed to do. This red 500ml version is made from the usual good solid plastic and has the extremely well designed leak proof lid which once screwed in place really doesn’t leak. There’s also a catch to stop the lid opening and a little loop lock for extra protection. The lid also has a fold out ring for carrying or fastening to a bag which is actually quite useful and doesn’t get in the way when not being used.
The stand out feature for this “new” version which is actually the same as their previous bottles is the now included straw which fits in to the lit of the bottle. The straw is also made from sturdy plastic and once the lid is in place it reaches to the bottom of the bottle. Now this may be something some people prefer as you would now drink without tipping the bottle up but I actually prefer it without the straw and drinking by tipping the bottle. The straw does just pull out of the lid and then you’re back to the last version of the bottle so I’m happy, but my young daughter is a big fan of the straw so she’s happy too with the small version of this bottle I got for her.
Overall, excellent bottle, truly leakproof and now includes a detachable straw so you can suit yourself. Recommended.
This bottle feels well made and very robust, my son has taken it to school and it has survived being thrown around in his school bag with is great testament to the quality.
The lid has a clever double lock mechanism (a sliding catch and a flip over guard) which is very secure preventing accidental opening. Once open the lid is attached so no fear of dropping it.
There is a small loop handle on the back of the bottle but this is a bit annoying to access when it is clipped down as it is very difficult to get a hold of.
The bottle is made of plastic with a nice textured outer meaning it is easy to grip and doesn’t slip out of wet hands.
There are some measurements printed on the outside of the bottle but as the material is completely opaque you cannot see the internal liquid level at all making the markings useless.
To drink from the bottle you can use the internal, wide, straw so you keep the bottle upright or remove the straw and tip the bottle to drink.
The straw doesn’t quite go to the very bottom of the bottle so there is always a bit of liquid left when drinking through the straw.
Overall a quality bottle with just a couple of very minor annoyances.
It hasn’t been subjected to prolonged use, so there is always room for this to fail down the line and leak, but the triple lock design would seem to minimise the chance of this happening and in our time with it, it has survived everything from being carried upside down, to being thrown in a bag, to being left loose in the boot of a car.
The bottle is convenient to clean by hand, helped in no small part by the detachable straw making every awkward part of the bottle fully accessible. There is always the option to put it in a dishwasher though, which is a nice option to have.
The bottle is not insulated so won’t help to keep liquids hot or cold, which can be a problem if you have fussy drinkers who won’t touch a drink if it is warmed up (even just a little) when it is meant to be cold. But it doesn’t claim it will – so if you need that then you’ll be looking elsewhere anyway.
Overall, a solid bottle that is maybe a shade on the expensive side. My justification for keeping 5 stars and not docking a star for cost here is simple: it has proven to be truly leakproof. If I were to add up all the bottles I’ve tried that claim to be leakproof but turned out not to be, I would see I have spent many, many times more than any extra cost this bottle has over the next best. That comfort factor is worth it, in my opinion, especially when the bottle is often mixed with high value electronics that don’t like to get wet.
