Works good for gaming – average 100 fps on cpu based games and the fan does get a bit loud when playing intense games but other than that its super quiet and the cpu temperature stays at 50-52 degrees celsius. I haven’t had any problems so fa
The performance of these Ryzen chips is very good. There is nothing in day to day use which would indicate that this is a ‘laptop part’.
The UM790 is surprisingly quiet, coming from an Asus PN50, the latter is much louder. So very happy with acoustics.
I don’t game with this PC, so can’t comment on the performance there.
As many have complained about, the rubber feet which cover the screw holes are stuck on and removing them kills the sticky tape, so they don’t really stay attached anymore. Minor, but bad design.
The PSU seems to be a new model, it is much more compact that the unit which reviewers have previously displayed.
Couldn’t find a way to upload a certificate to the bios, so booting some Linux/grub OS iso requires switching off secure boot, then switching it back on after OS install.
Overall pleased and would recommend. Watch out for occasional discount coupons.
A great deal of research went into the purchase of the UM790 Pro. A friend bought a 32gb RAM one at the beginning of December. I went for the 64gb RAM version (it was the only one in Amazon stock). I edit photographs and create videos, so I was hoping the increase in RAM would ensure the onboard video element would have enough. The unit is very small and keeps surprisingly cool. I haven’t heard a fan yet. It worked straight out of the box and in the two weeks I’ve had it I’ve transferred key files from my old tower PC, installed Office 365, games and photo/video software. The more you use the PC the quicker it boots. The service centre responded to a query form within 24 hours. Great service. My friend’s unit shipped with Windows 11 Pro, but I’m advised that they are now shipped with Windows 11 Home. As far as I can make out, that means you don’t get Bitlocker without upgrading to Windows 11 Pro. You decide whether you need it or not. I’m yet to be convinced. Value for money wise, I couldn’t update my tower PC to a similar spec for anywhere near the cost of this unit, and it is cheaper than its mini PC rivals.
I ordered the HX77G as a replacement for my previous mini-PC that had started to get on my nerves. The old PC would, even just sitting on the Windows desktop, kick up the fans and due to it’s smaller size (about half the HX77G) the fan noise was quite high pitched. I found the HX77G via internet searches and it was said to be pretty quiet.
And that it certainly is. Sitting on the desktop, or even running a benchmark app like Cinebench, the machine is quiet from where I’m sitting (~1.5m from the computer). If I go up to it, I can hear the fans, but even then the noise is a dull, very low frequency hum that easily gets lost in the ambient noice of the environment. Even during some light gaming (Airport CEO, Dyson Sphere Program, Timberborn) the fans stayed very quiet and only came on loudly (you can adjust the temperature when they kick in 100% in the BIOS) at the most hectic times.
Very happy with this machine, I think it will serve me quietly for years to come and spare my nerves.
The PC itself certainly does the job and does it quite well. For it’s size it is quick. Best of all, it will happily idle at 18 watts so I feel happy knowing I’m saving polar bears while I work.
The inclusion of windows 11 is a bit of a let down (because I can’t stand windows 11) it might have been better to include windows 10 as you have the option to upgrade for free if you really really want it.
I have had a few software crashes in things like development software and virtual box that don’t bode particularly well, but with PC’s you can never quite be sure where things are messing up. For all I know this is just a windows 11 thing. Unless I see a smoking gun I’m not going to point fingers at the hardware.
I did try to get support from minis forum regarding memory upgrades. I was VERY disappointed. They respond quickly enough, just don’t expect knowledgeable responses. That said I get very irate with Dell support so this might not mean anything
I thought it was time I replaced two custom built tower PCs. They were so highly specified originally that they still worked fine after 12 years but I thought I should not push my luck. I wnet down the Mini PC route 4 years ago when I bought a little intel i3 KODLIX mini PC for web streaming to a wide screen tv. I don’t play computer games but I do a lot of cpu-intensive HD and UHD video re-encoding. This highly-specified Ryzen 9 mini PC looked suitable so I cautiously bought one “on-spec” two months ago. Delivery by Amazon was next day, though I am not a Prime member. I found it straightforward to add extra 2.5″ internal SSDs, aided by the helpful video provided by the seller. This quasi paperback-sized Mini PC feels heavy and looks solidly built. The plastic case is clearly strong and unobtrusive; it is quite irrelevant to me how much carbon fibre it actually contains.
The vertically mounted computer is almost silent, except when the fan racks up for cpu-intensive processing, when it throws out a surprising amount of hot air. This indicates that the relatively “state of the art” liquid metal cooling does facilitate excellent heat transfer. Video processing is as fast as one would expect of an 8 core Ryzen 9 chip. The integral graphic processor in the chip works fine with my single 4K monitor and external usb3 blue ray disc drive / recorder. This is a fast machine. What is not fast is the tedious business of reloading software onto windows, a problem of Microsoft not the machine.
Value for money, particularly if you get a good voucher deal, is excellent. I have no experience using the machine for gaming nor have I needed to contact the seller, so I have not rated those items.
Perhaps the best recommendation is that I was sufficiently impressed with the machine that a few weeks later I bought one for my wife. I would have preferred to buy her a more “goof-proof” MiniMac with M1 chip, not that much more expensive. However she is addicted to a particular legacy piece of Microsoft software which, to my surprise, still runs fine on Windows 11.
I rarely write Amazon reviews and it is early days yet, but two happy users of the Minisforum Ryzen 5900HX MiniPC here!
