Bought my copy direct from Amazon USA. It is Region 1 and 6 hours, 1 minute long. The bonus features are the same as the Region 2 version (under which my review appears), 3 discs with the bonus features on all 3 discs and there are English subtitles on all of the 8 (VIII) episodes.

Taylor Sheridan is a zealous fan of the western genre if you didn’t know : ‘Yellowstone’ of course, ‘1883’ and ‘1923’ tv productions. And he writes and/or directs gritty brutal series like ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ and Sly’s ‘Tulsa King’ and several films like the ‘Sicario’ franchise.

This is another winner with a compelling performance from Brit David Oyelowo as the titular and rare black US Marshal. My personal view is that Oyelowa was a little bit ‘wooden’ in the later episodes but that was probably just right in the context of the character. The series focuses on both his home life (rather soapish in my view again) and his professional job of capturing outlaws which is shown very gritty and violent. A successful balance has been struck for the audience.
Donald Sutherland provides the gravitas in the series. But sadly again after seeing in the recent tv series ‘The Undoing’ he is again not very mobile, always sitting, yet he still delivers his lines with great authority, a class act literally.

Another good characterization from Barry Pepper (the sniper in ‘Saving Private Ryan’) and there are solid performances from several actors in cameos, such as Dennis Quaid, Paula Malcolmson, Shea Whigham. Yet again there are several Native Americans in supporting parts, a change from their usual roles of being shot off their horses and biting the dust —- the Americans are changing !
Beautifully shot in the South West of America, a region coming into its own with ‘Dark Winds’ also being filmed there.
The whole thing is quite stunning and a credit once again to Sheridan for picking up another unusual historic piece and giving us western fans something to get our teeth into. Of special note is the interview with Production Designer Wynn Thomas in the extras.

The title of this series is significant as it is LAWMEN : Bass Reeves. Could there be more ‘lawmen’ coming ? Wyatt Earp ? Bat Masterson ? Wild Bill Hickock ? et al.
