(THE BEAST IN) THE CELLAR BLURAY FROM 88FILMS released 22 April 2024 Just so there is no confusion my review is for this 88 FILMS BLURAY released 22 April 2024. The BLURAY is truly excellent with good crisp picture, colour, sound and subtitles, and an interesting commentary with Allan Bryce (I normally don’t care for them but this worth listening to). Now – to the film! If you are expecting a “Hammer/Gothic” horror along, maybe, the line of “Baby Jane” – Forget it! This is basically a two hander on one set with a bit of outside filming. There are brief bloody scenes of the murders, but nothing too gory, except for “an eye” (see the film). When you have two such fine actresses as Reid and Robson and a good script, camera work, and direction that is all you need for a masterclass in fine acting. Reid’s monologue about her “Daddy” going to war should be treasured and shown to acting classes. There are other actors. Tessa Wyatt is fine as a district nurse, but John Hamill is abit wooden. Don’t hold your breath for the “big reveal”! It’s not big but I have to say it is just right for what has gone before. An oddity? Yes! But one worthwhile getting. Just don’t expect full on horror (P.S. The title on the credits is just “THE CELLAR”. Perhaps more apprpropriate.
Not THAT bad! This is a rare British horror flick that works more as a kind of psychological thriller due to Beryl Reid and Flora Robson playing it dead straight. Think Crawford and Davis in Baby Jane.
Beryl steals the show when she does her “When Daddy went to war…” monologue. You don’t get many actors of that calibre anymore, sadly.
It all goes a bit iffy when the “beast” is revealed as the make up is not the best but that doesn’t take away from Robson and Reid putting in great performances regardless of the genre.
A must for fans of campy horrors and the picture looks gorgeous. The quality makes everything look bigger budget than it actually was.
A Classic Horror Mystery Film A brilliant film, starring well-known actors. I saw it many years ago when it was new and it has stood the test of time. On the first occasion I did not guess who the murderer was, not (I suspect) did many other people, so I shall not spoil it for others by giving away the plot. A gripping mystery with moments of terror, humour, sadness and even eroticism.
Beryl and Dame Flora The very best in British film with the above acting geniuses of their time. What more can I say?
I think this is the kind of film you will either love or hate, depending on whether you are into quality acting, or expecting a huge amount of blood and gore. You will need an open mind; this may “challenge” you personally in some way.
I am definitely glad I bought it, even though I haven’t had it long. I had watched it several years ago
Atmospheric This film as so much atmosphere ok the story a little silly but love these kind films they have a kind of difference about them thanks for letting me buy it as i put on my wish list could not get it, and then there it was
