In 1858 the successful grain merchant Hiram Walker founded what would become Canadian Club Whisky. The distillery was built in Walkerville, Ontario, across the river from Detroit, MI, because of the exceptional quality of local grains there. By the turn of the century Walker’s whisky had experienced significant growth and popularity in gentlemen’s clubs, taking on the name ‘Club Whisky’. That later evolved into ‘Canadian Club Whisky’ when U.S. lawmakers sought to regulate trade with Canada.

Return to youth.
I used to drink Canadian Club with Canada Dry Ginger Ale when I was young. I turned 81 in December 2023 and am returning to my youth with a gentle tipple – love it!
Excellent Value and a perfect Old Fashioned
If you want a very reasonably priced bourbon that makes a good Old Fashioned cocktail, this one is perfect for the job. On its own, or with cola, it’s not bad, but lacks a strong flavour to stand out. However, that’s exactly what makes it perfect in cocktails. A dash of bitters and a little sugar or simple syrup, a little ice or water and this will make you a deliciously smooth drink with balanced flavours to relax and sip.
Nice eh?
Curiosity got the better of me after reading several reviews. It’s an okay whisky when drunk ‘neat’, even if a little watery and lacking a strong texture compared to a decent scotch whisky. That said it’s a nice taste and leaves a strong warm feeling in the back of the mouth / throat. I remember my Grandad drinking this with dry ginger ale and now I know why as both compliment each other very nicely. Overall a good buy , will drink with dry ginger ale to fully enjoy.
Best Wisky
I am not a whiskey drinker and prefer the smoother taste of Brandy or bourbon, but this really is a smooth tasting whiskey, and much closer to a bourbon. Can’t find it in the supermarkets, but at this price its good value.
A Mixer!
I’m an avid whisky drinker and currently have over 50 variety of whiskies in my bar! I like to explore flavour profiles and recommend when there is a really good or a bad one! This one is odd as I have actually been watching it in Amazon going for between 16 and 20 for over a year and people have given it 5 stars! I decided to pick it up for 16 and I’m glad I did because to me this is flavourless! Please don’t get me wrong as this has a purpose (for mixing!) But not for sipping or creating good cocktails! I would also say that this spirit is smooth and oaky but thats about it (no character). So if you want to use and abuse, put it in your coke or ginger ale this is good bargain spirit. Enjoy!
I know virtually nothing about Canadian whisky – my preferred tipple would be a peated/smoky Scotch – but I’m always amenable to trying new drams, and Canadian Club seems to be something of a cult beverage. In my ignorance I expected something along the lines of a Kentucky bourbon, so a woody tang tempered by caramel and honey. This is nothing like a bourbon, in fact it doesn’t really bear comparison to any American whisky I’ve yet tried. It’s simply a very good blend, not on a par with my favourite blends (JW Green, Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition) but it’s damn good value at 18. It’s extremely smooth, almost scarily so, and pleasantly sweet without being cloying. There’s surprisingly good body to it as well, and the bottlers have paired this with the tang of ethanol in a very clever way. The finish is lacking but you come to expect that at this price.
I’ll certainly be buying this again and can well see why many swear by it. A pleasant surprise!
Well well well this really is a blast from the past! A very rare one at that. Many moons ago I remember every Christmas seeing this standing on top of the drinks cabinet. My Father used to gift it to my Mother every year without fail as her holiday tipple. Some years later it became harder & harder to find until it finally disappeared from shelves everywhere. She switched to another brand but she was never as happy with any of the substitutes she had & she’d always mention how much she enjoyed this. Just before Mother’s Day I spotted it on here & surprised her with it on Mothering Sunday she was absolutely thrilled. With it coming up to Christmas I’ve returned for another bottle. The price varies so it seems because in April I paid 19 & in December just 16. On both occasions it was delivered free next day delivery via Amazon Prime. In my opinion 15-16 is a good price point after all it isn’t a fine scotch or bourbon. If you’re looking for either of those then you’ll be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong this is a nice drink in its own right but it’s very different. This is slightly spicy if I had to compare it to something I personally think the soft spicy/vanilla tones are reminiscent of Tick Tock vanilla chai tea but with a smooth nuttiness thrown in for good measure. I enjoy this over ice one part Canadian Dry two parts American Ginger Ale but there are plenty of other ways to serve it if you look online for ideas. I first tried it neat over ice because that’s how I take my Bourbons. However I’d been mislead with this often being lumped into that category I assumed I’d enjoy this served the same way but that’s when you can really tell the difference. It doesn’t deserve a spot with those drinks “Spiced Whiskey” is where it belongs. That’s why I’d recommend this to Brandy fans particularly those who enjoy the spicy tones of Metaxa I think they’d be pleasantly surprised. And if you’re thinking of gifting anyone over 70 this I’m guessing you’ll blow their socks off! Overall I’m very happy with this purchase & the nostalgia it’s brought both myself & my Mother, which is pretty ironic in itself because alcohol usually does the opposite & strips you of all you’re fun memories! Thank you Amazon don’t let this one disappear again!
