– Review for Doff Slug and Snail Killer Pellets Garden Slug Repellent Pet Friendly Organic 800g || Price: 12.49 (at time of ordering) –
After trying several useless other products, I was ready to give up hope. The snails had all but won. This was my final shot, and being pet friendly as were the others, I really didn’t expect much. I’m not sure what I was using before, but the results have been night and day. I honestly thought my Dahlias were goners, but I am seeing new buds and less slime – in September! I’m remaining vigilant and there’s still much damage to repair, however this might just be the one. Highly recommended.
Useful
The snails and slugs in my backyard have always been a major headache for me, especially since the slugs tend to crawl around at night. So, I decided to try out the Neviland Doff Slug and Snail Killer Pellets. The pellets are incredibly easy to use—just evenly sprinkle them on bare soil or around your crops. The bright blue color of the pellets makes them very visible on the ground, so it’s easy to see where you’ve covered. After using them, I noticed a reduction in the number of slugs and snails in my garden. With 800 grams in the tub, this product should last quite a while. In terms of price, 11.29 isn’t the cheapest option available.
Does the job
The pellets are easy to dispense. Too easy in fact as the container’s opening is large. This tends to result in an excess of pellets being applied, leading to wastage. A smaller opening or dispensing funnel would be an improvement.
The pellets are effective for slugs and snails. In dry conditions the pellets remain effective for a long time. They resist normal watering , light rain and dew. After heavy rain, they deteriorate rapidly. This is a shame as this is when the slugs and snails are most active.
I hope you found this review useful.
If you have a question, I always try to respond when Amazon forwards them to me.
We have tried quite a few pet friendly slug and snail deterents / killer products over the last few months, and this offering from Doff seems to be the only one that works thus far.
My biggest problem with this is that although the Amazon description claims that this product is safe around pets, there is no indication on the bottle to support this, which is a bit of a worry. All it says is “USE AS DIRECTED TO PROTECT CHILDREN AND PETS”. Because of this we have been quite careful in its usage, only spreading it around the soil in pots we know that our cats and dog can’t get to. In these cases, the slugs have been a lot less prevalent, which is great.
We have been tempted to use this directly on the garden but we now have a couple of hedgehogs living in our garden and slugs make a fantastic food for them and we don’t want to cause any illness to the hogs so we will withold scattering these pellets on the borders for now.
The pellets are blue so are easily seen, and as claimed, they appear to hold up well after watering. Other positives include the fact that these are organic and made in the UK. So overall our experience of this product is positive but I would like to have a bit more clarification on the suitability and safeness around pets, otherwise we recommend this as one of the few organic and pesticide-free slug and snail killers that actually works.
Just in time for the return of wet weathe
I always refused to use metaldehyde slug pellets, as they were deadly to wildlife and pets – and I’m so glad that they’re now banned in the UK. However, I have been using the ferric phosphate ones for years, including the Doff brand, as they have always been approved for organic gardening.
Now that we’re all being encouraged to live with slugs and snails, rather than kill them, I try to limit my use of pellets as much as possible. I was managing really well this year until I recently planted out a tray of plants that I bought as tiny plug plants, and had been carefully nurturing for months in my conservatory. The next morning, several had disappeared completely! Lobbing the snails over my back wall into the park was clearly not going to work this time! I therefore sought out last year’s pellets – and now need some more.
I like the fact that with these pellets you don’t get left with too much slime, and they can withstand a certain amount of rain and watering – although the reality in my garden is that there are so many slugs and snails that the pellets get eaten rather than washed away! I’m always amazed that however liberally I sprinkle them, they disappear incredibly quickly, so I do need to keep reapplying them when the weather is wet. However, by only using them when absolutely necessary, I find that this large 800g tub will last me a couple of years, so 12.49 then seems much more reasonable.
In conclusion, I would recommend using these Doff pellets when you really have to. However, I would ignore the first bullet point of the description that says: “Effective Slug & Snail Control – eliminates slug and snail problems in all weather conditions”. More accurate is what is says on the tub: “Reduces damage caused by slugs and snails”!
Effective.
This is a very large quantity of slug and snail killer. The fine blue granules are easy to spread and it’s clear to see where you have covered. They have proved to be very effective and seem to be quite long lasting, reducing the need for frequent repeat applications. Pleased with this product.
Large pack; organic
You get a large 800 g shaker pack.
These blue pellets are stated as suitable for organic gardening – it seems to work with an active ingredient of iron phosphate. Despite being marked as organic there are loads of safety warnings to follow.
Quite expensive I guess at almost 13 but this is a larger than usual size pack.
Overall happy to give this a go – I don’t seem to need it right now but will report back if any issues.
Large tub
A good size tub. The pellets are small and blue so easy to see where you are scattering them. Hope they will stop the slugs from eating my runner beans so have put them into a slug trap.
One that works
Great product from a brand I have used many times. These slug pellets do actually have some resistance to the rain and don’t just go to mush like some others. They are not cheap at 12.49 but this is a pretty big 800g helping that should last a while
Didn’t kill the rabbi
Bought this to put round our rabbits hutch as was sick to death of the slippery little creatures from hell sneaking into our little boys home and eating all of his food!!! I bought this as it said it was animal friendly, however, it doesn’t state this on the bottle!! But thought we’d risk it to save us from gagging at the sight of ‘the things’ every morning! So we liberally applied the tiny blue saviour pellets around the bottom of the hutch (outside on the ground) .. and we have won the battle, no more kale stealing little buggers, eating our bunny’s food!! Plus, the rabbit is fine so I presume that it is safe for pets?!? Or he hasn’t managed to snaffle one off the ground (again I reiterate that I DID NOT PUT ANY IN THE HUTCH before you all start trying to blame me for attempted rabbit murder) so all in all .. these work!!
Slugs and snails love my New Dahlias, but NOT FOR LONG...
I have just had over 20 Dahlia’s planted and the pesky slugs and snails were munching them, so I had to do something urgently. I initially used nematoads. Then I had do do something more drastic. Since using this Doff product my plants are now bouncing back. So good so far. As a dog owner I had to be very careful to use a correct and safe product for my Lady Charley. Everyone’s happy.
So far so good
Due to the amount of rain this year, many of our plants have been ravaged by slugs and snails. Purchased this and applied the first evening – so far so good. No sign of slugs or snails and what’s left of our plants, may now survive.
We were inundated with a plague of slugs and snails this year and unable to purchase any suitable product locally. After applying a liberal dose of the Doff product delighted to see clear decking and slug free plants the next morning. On the second morning I saw a few slugs in odd corners of the garden. So far so good. As we have pets we are very careful with products used in the garden. No adverse reactions from either dog or cat with this product. My sunflower which was eaten alive may now have a chance of survival! Seems to do what it says on the can! Keep you updated.
